This paper addresses issues of scheduling a job mix, consisting of parallel jobs and single-task, but computationally intensive jobs, on distributed processors. It considers a scheduling algorithm, referred to as periodic scheduling. With this algorithm, processor queues are rearranged only at the end of predefined time intervals, called periods. The goal is to examine whether periodic scheduling can significantly reduce the overhead that is involved with the corresponding non-periodic policy and to also provide good performance. Simulation is employed to evaluate the performance of this algorithm for different period sizes. Simulation results demonstrate that periodic job scheduling can meet the goal.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123767443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, this study proposes a structured approach to identify these positions and roles in a network by integrating social network and multivariate analysis. First, an adjacency matrix is constructed based on the graph theory to indicate the correlation between collected data. The next step is to conduct the network analysis and compute the statistics of network centrality. Then, the principal component analysis was made to break down these statistics to a few principal components. These selected principal components are then used as cluster variables for a two-step cluster analysis. Hierarchical cluster analysis was first made to determine the proper number of clusters and then K-means clustering was used for dividing actors into k proper positions. In addition, the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) is conducted to test the significance between those positions. After that, a new adjacency matrix was built upon the rearrangement of k positions. The frequency within and between these positions is then computed and the cut-off value is determined to distinguish the difference between these frequencies. Finally, each position will be labeled based on its characteristics and the relationship within and between these positions. After the structured approach is constructed, the litigation-related network of smartphone makers will be used as empirical evidence. The results show that this structured approach can effectively distinguish the position and role of a company in a network.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122612520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Basic education qualification (9th year of schooling) is considered the general education in Portugal, since students do not have to make choices about their future. At the end of 9th year, students will choose if they want to pursue their studies in arts, science and technology or humanistic areas or if they want to enroll in professional studies. This explains the application of questionnaire in classes of 9th grade to analyze students' perception about engineering profession and STEM careers. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first paper in the scientific community, concerning the study of engineering perception in Portuguese basic schools. This first intervention allows concluding that there is a lack of motivation to endorse engineering courses.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122705356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A dedicated function has been reserved for the data collection activities. In this matter, the Cloud Collaborative Manufacturing Networks (C2NET) project tends to provide a cloud based platform for hosting the interactions of the supply chain in a collaborative network. Within the architecture of the C2NET project, a Data Collection Framework (DCF) is designed to fulfill the function of data collection. This allows the companies to provide their data, which can be both enterprise and Internet of Things (IoT) devices type of data to the platform for further use. The collection of the data is achieved by a specific third party application, i.e., the Legacy System Hub (LSH). This research work presents the approach of configuring and visualizing the data resources in the C2NET platform. This approach employs the web-based applications and the help of the LSH. This permits the C2NET platform to adapt to any kind of third party application, which manipulates enterprise data, following the generic and flexible solution of this approach.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122723922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, lean manufacturing has tended to focus mainly on physical production processes and is less effective when dealing with information flows and cognitive work. This paper describes research into work analysis methods that form the basis for effective productivity improvement guides for knowledge workers. Through an action research approach, it focuses on complex problem solving in a highly automated manufacturing environment. We present four productivity improvement principles accompanied by practical methods that improve the visibility and analysis of cognitive work, communication patterns and information flows.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"2016 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127488579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the advent of the cloud computing paradigm and the evolvement of a number of enabling technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), a series of new challenges and opportunities have arisen. It is not only the amount of data that is and will be available but also the number and diversity of advanced digital manufacturing technologies and systems that make the management and integration of all relevant information and processes a very complex task. In this paper, these challenges are outlined and reviewed in the context of the novel technological developments that have started to emerge. At the same time, the potential application areas as well as the business opportunities, stemming from the deployment of more sophisticated PLM systems, are discussed.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130794830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are caused externally (e.g. change in customer needs) or internally (e.g. product complexity). This leads to a limited effectiveness of traditional (product-) developments methods and requires the incorporation of new ones. One of the main strategies handling uncertainty is to accomplish the challenge of being agile that goes hand in hand with ever-present change [2]. Especially, multiple-discipline mechatronic engineering needs to cope with a high level of uncertainty and complexity. This paper aims to address this challenges by examining mechatronic product development within a start-up, that is specialized on new product development and a flexible cooperation. It proposes a holistic methodology that integrates the perspectives of agile development, product architecture development and engineering change management. The goal of the project presented as a case study in this paper was to develop a machine that automatically produces a special sort of Omani bread on demand for household and small restaurant usage.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128959974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Innovation driven by open communities has proven to have a significant potential, in particular for open source software. However, tools and methodologies enabling the supervision of collaborative innovation involving open communities, in the perspective of creating open hardware to solve societal issues, remains at the early stages. This paper seeks to pinpoint the potentialities and challenges of such projects toward defining methods to better support a multi-stakeholders open source collaboration context. The experimental field of this research concerns the smart electricity distribution, and more precisely a public driven project of the diffusion of smart-meters in France and their appropriation by open source communities, with the involvement of the university and a public industrial company. The project seeks to study how these communities of users develop in a collaborative manner, new products and services using the smart-meter as a support technology. The first results show that the open community makes natural connection on specific environments such as Smart buildings to materialize usages of smart meters.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129302393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this issue, entrepreneurship has been increasingly used by policy-makers in developed economies as a central element in their policies to promote economic growth. While entrepreneurship is now considered to be a key element in growth-oriented policies, there exists a need for a larger foundation of knowledge about how to develop successful entrepreneurship ecosystems. This paper aims to characterize the investor groups' perceptions towards ecosystem builders in European startup ecosystems, with particular attention to the aspects of the ecosystem builders' contribution to startups and to the cooperation between ecosystem builders and investor groups. This investigation is composed by an extensive literature review to startup ecosystems and ecosystem actors, and by an empirical study to investor groups' perception concerning to this subject. To acquire empirical data it was conducted an online questionnaire directed to a sample of investor groups located in Portugal, U.K. and Germany. Our findings suggest that the aspects of the ecosystem builders' contribution towards startups that investor groups most value are startup screening, entrepreneurial education and access to mentoring. As for the cooperation between ecosystem builders and investor groups the results showed that there exists room for improvement, especially with regard to communication and information sharing.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"34 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129479526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that data will be one of the main resources in the future. Nevertheless, data need to be transformed into valuable information and further systematically integrated into a value proposition. In order to develop these smart services a data-driven business model has to be developed and evaluated. For this reason, a literature review has been conducted to identify existing business model approaches in context of Industrie 4.0 and Product-Service Systems. Based on the results of the review requirements for a new model and method have been defined and a data-driven business model including an extensive catalogue of key questions have been developed and applied with an industrial partner. The findings and results of the study are presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":421648,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation (ICE/ITMC)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133644142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
