This is achieved using an Arduino microcontroller, a global system for mobile communication (GSM) module, and a liquid crystal display (LCD). The smart hiving technology allows beekeepers to receive all information related to bees inside the hive at regular intervals and they are alerted through their mobile phones in case of emergency situations. This paper also discusses the advantages of the proposed system to customers and beekeepers, as well as some challenges and provides recommendations.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122405944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensors we deploy measure soil moisture, soil temperature, ambient temperature and relative humidity and transmit these parameters to a server over a Long Range wide area network (LoRaWAN) which exploits the long range low power LoRa protocol. We report the results of a field test conducted in central Kenya and show that our system can accurately measure parameters of interest and provide alerts to farmers.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121405782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instructively, for a successful gamification process in learning, motivational theories and behavioral outcomes for the learner have to be incorporated in design framework. Observably gamification projects particularly within the education domain for e-learning platforms have encountered challenges key amongst them, emanating from lack of appropriate gamification design framework. Subsequently the study sought through systematic literature review to investigate types of gamification design frameworks. 16 design frameworks were evaluated and only 2 frameworks were designed for gamification within an e-learning environment. However the two frameworks did not address motivational affordances, behavioral Outcomes and evaluations rigor. In view of this the study proposes a framework identifying games elements as motivational affordances that influence behavioral outcome of the learner.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115136991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was conducted in four townships around Blantyre, Malawi using Village Banks as a case. Questionnaires, observations and secondary literature were used as data gathering techniques. Guided by Sen’s Capability Approach and Castell’s Social Networks theory, a thematic data analysis was used and the study revealed that by facilitating information and knowledge sharing between informal groups and formal commercial service providers, there is a capability that members of the informal groups can transform into serious investors from which they can realise sound development through investment of their groups savings into different sectors from stock exchange to estate management. It also revealed the potential of inclusion of lower income members of society into investments which have for a long time been regarded as only for the few elite individuals.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123249323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many studies have been done on these plants and their uses, but these studies are not readily available to people interested in learning from them. The current study investigated participants' knowledge on Namibia's indigenous medicinal plants and their uses, as well as participants' perspectives of the ease of use and usefulness of e-learning to preserve knowledge on Namibia's indigenous medicinal plants. A qualitative approach was followed using questionnaires to collect data. Analysing the data thematically indicated that all participants were aware that Namibia has indigenous plants used for medicinal purposes, but most had no idea of their appearance, preparation and application methods. The participants perceived e-learning to be useful at preserving knowledge on Namibia's indigenous medicinal plants and that using an e-learning system for preserving knowledge on Namibia's indigenous medicinal plants would be effortless. This was mostly influenced by their prior experience of using e-learning in their studies and work environments.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123584890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Governments and Law Enforcement Agencies are aware of this and look for potential countermeasures not only following traditional solutions. Technological countermeasures are not enough there is a need to foster the Culture of Cyber Security. The present paper introduces an innovative Cyber Range to be integrated in the foreseen European Cyber Range Network. The proposed solution provides tools to test the resilience of networks and systems by exposing them to realistic nation-state cyber threats in a secure facility with the latest tools, techniques and malware, this facilitate the testing of critical technologies with enhanced agility, flexibility and scalability, it helps to strengthen the stability, security and performance of cyberinfrastructures and IT systems used by government and private organisations. The document describes a platform devoted to easily create virtual environments devoted to cyberwarfare training and cybertechnology development. The solution is in line with typical simulator’s features will be fed by real case study and will create a knowledge base of cyber treats and related extended effects and mitigation/counteractions. A specific features is the identification of the zero-day vulnerabilities in order to reduce or eliminate the Window of Vulnerability (WoV) and identify main attack vectors.Main outcomes are: improved situational awareness of cyber warfare scenarios, rapid identification of zero-day vulnerabilities, environment for the development of countermeasures, training environment for practitioners.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"1041 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131590818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under these standards, examination results could well be interpreted to mean personal data, which could also apply in Africa. This paper contends that a similar interpretation of examination results as personal data on African soil could be welcome in terms of promoting general information privacy, but also introduces some rights and obligations which could be too impractical to guarantee. The paper concludes by suggesting that African lawmakers should initiate and engage relevant discussions to come up with appropriate norms which simultaneously protect the privacy of examination results while ensuring that their processing does not drag along a bunch of unfeasible rights and obligations which could only hinder the smooth organisation of public examinations or processing of examination results.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116096131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Weather extremes (such as heat, drought, freeze, etc.) are limiting conditions for the cultivation of agricultural crops. Long term monitoring of particular quantities such as temperature, humidity, wind conditions and so on are essential for decision making in agriculture. Since the monitoring is an expensive process, the physical monitoring stations are usually very coarse. The common approach to combine these data with a global model. This paper presents steps which can be done further, using temperature as an example. The paper first presents a workflow, how to create a denser model of temperature distribution from a course one model of temperatures. Next, the paper outlines a method of how to analyze the temperature spatial distribution in time. The aim is to use historical meteorological series (e.g. of temperatures) to help farmers and producers of agriculture’s products with decision making.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129299404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
