Noticeboards are constrained in terms of reach, poor feedback mechanisms and a general lack of security. Posts can be tampered with by malicious people or even removed by competitors. Due to their fixed nature, noticeboards also do not cater for context, meaning that a lot of posts are consumed outside of their actionable spaces. This research proposes a context aware noticeboard in which subscribers are able to receive, store or share notices based on their context and be in a better position to react or act on them accordingly. Object Oriented Analysis and Agile development methodologies were applied to develop a robust and dynamic, context aware Android-based noticeboard application with an analytical backend for visualizations. The final prototype was tested for usability and functionality with usability and acceptance rates of more than 90%. Furthermore, we recommend that more services being hinged on BLE and context awareness should be explored due to the success of the proposed solution. Additionally, it is imperative that institutions migrate towards smart solutions for communication.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129255060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobile devices have become the very best target due to the fact that, they are largely accustomed to performing numerous activities. Email communication, sending and receiving text messages, installation of monetary applications (apps) such as mobile banking apps and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) adoption in enterprises for work-related functions are among others. Literature review establishes that attackers of mobile devices gather sensitive user and enterprise data, which they use for blackmailing or for amerceable monetary gains. As the subsequent result of mobile app protection and Android vulnerability concerns, researchers and practitioners are evaluating the impact the security of android mobile device has on enterprise and personal data. This paper reviews the extent of data leakage through android devices in a BYOD enabled environment, android application security model and BYOD benefits and risks using desktop review as the methodology.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115986169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The continual rises of wireless mobile technology bring an attention to enhance e-government systems by extending some of the services to be accessed and delivered via a mobile phone. Due to lack of standard extension procedures each government institutions extends according to developer’s technical knowledge. The main objective of this paper is to develop extension procedures for enhancing web based e-government systems with a mobile service. In this study both exploratory and prototyping methods were used. Exploratory method was used during data collection. Prototyping was used during design and development of mgovernment service prototype. Web based e-Government systems in fourteen (14) Government departments, Ministries and Agencies were analyzed to identify a system for enhancement. Wananchi portal, under the Ministry of information, culture art and sports was selected. The selection criteria were the system that has direct interaction with citizens. During design and development of m-service prototype, several extension procedures and their interactions were observed and recorded; six (6) procedures were found relevant. Therefore, this paper proposes a six steps extension procedures from web based e-government to m-government. Clear understanding of the extension process will reduce development time and cost. Extending web based system with mobile services means extra services and hence more revenue to network and service providers. To the government, it means an added/alternative channel to service her citizens, and to the citizens, means readily accessible and responsive Government","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121962591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Geriatric persons in philanthropic social homes (PSH) in developing countries are not favored in terms of infrastructure, housing, caregiving as well as privacy since they are in a controlled communal environment. These philanthropic homes, commonly known as ‘Nyumba za Wazee’ in Kenya are slowly gaining reputation as more of the elderly are ostracized because of inheritance or even abandonment. The aim of this paper is to bring fourth the status quo of the geriatric persons living in PSH, the challenges they face, which have tremendous ramifications that leads to strong incentives to usage of low cost technology to alleviate the lives of the elderly towards healthy living in their higher ages. The researchers, through the social department and Board of management of these social homes, carried a research for a period of 3 months in two PSHs, in Nairobi County and Kiambu County. Interviews and storytelling were the two data collection techniques used. The findings from these two PSHs, categorized the challenges as; physical, and psychological challenges. This research argues that low affordable technology solutions will curb these challenges to ensure adequate care and provide decent standards of living for the elderly in PSH.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133293941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For many years, corporate governance has been at the forefront of how efficient and effective day-to-day business operations are conducted. With information technology (IT) being integrated into many of the organizations that exist today, many businesses have adopted an IT governance strategy. IT governance has become critical in successful business operations. Many organizations implement IT governance to ensure that they align their IT strategy with the overall business goal. This alignment can help ensure that organizations are ahead of their competitors with respect to the industry in which they trade. In the private sector, adopting governance frameworks can aid in creating a defined structure within which to work. As technology has continued to evolve, the frameworks in IT governance have also done so over time. Having an IT governance framework in place can help organizations save costs, increase productivity and improve efficiency within operations. The banking industry in South Africa has been one of the key players in implementing governance over information and IT infrastructure. This is a critical analysis of existing trends and frameworks within the banking industry. In this paper, we discuss the COBIT and ITIL frameworks and the impact they have within the industry. The result of this paper is to illustrate the impact of IT governance frameworks within the banking industry with the correct guidelines and to recommend ways to improve the controls that are currently in place.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133250370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research offers a qualitative analysis of the views of women in three marginalised communities in South Africa. The study follows a phenomenological approach and relies on in-depth semi-structured individual interviews with women diverse in age, education and employment status. The findings indicate varied perspectives of a digital gender divide in their communities. Where such disparities are identified by women, there is a divergence in opinions as to the causes thereof, ranging from perceptions of males as innately more competent, to socially constructed gender norms influencing ICT activity. In shedding light on the mental models of ICT held by women, this research can contribute to the design and implementation of gender-sensitive digital inclusion strategies targeted at women in marginalised communities.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116807695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in the recent past, there has been a gradual decline in use of group tutorials discussions due large classes a lecturer is expected to teach. With the advent of emerging technologies such as cloud computing there is need to rethinking about how tutorials can be conducted in order to retain its benefits. This paper reports on an online tutorial management system (Tutmas) developed to improve the management of tutorials. It is based on research conducted at Kenyatta University where respondents were identified through snowballing. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews and observations then Agile Software Development approach was used to develop the platform. Tutmas is a platform that provides lecturers with a forum to setup classes, add tutorial questions or topics, schedule class presentations, monitor group activities and assess the performance of individual groups. On the other hand, students are able to enrol in tutorial groups, indentify questions to write on, collaborate in writing the paper, upload and share the final papers to class members.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130233980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Applying a mixed methods approach, a survey questionnaire was administered to 35 undergraduate students initially and in a second phase telephonic interviews were conducted with 12 purposively selected surveyed students based on their questionnaire responses to get a deeper understanding of student experience utilising e-books. Findings revealed that the use and acceptance of e-books in Namibia is still in its infancy. Although there is an awareness of e-books among students, most of them prefer print books. One of the reasons for low e-book usage was due to insufficient training on how to access them. It was recommended that faculty officers at this university collaborate with librarians to ensure prescribed e-books are purchased or subscribed to and adequate Information Literacy training is provided to students. Future research that focuses on expanding the sample size to include all faculties, benchmarked against different universities nationally and internationally will give further insight into e-book uptake in the digital age in Africa and globally. Further studies also need to be conducted to establish why about 14% of students don’t read books (print or electronic) at all whiles in school.","PeriodicalId":420572,"journal":{"name":"2019 IST-Africa Week Conference (IST-Africa)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116443081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
