It is important for the formation of Cyanocobalamin or Vitamin B12. Normally a healthy diet contains 5 to 50g of cobalt in a day. Cobalt generally does not cause any toxicity or poisoning until the exposed to large amounts and for longer time period. Poisoning can be caused by three ways which includeSwallowing too much, inhaled too much in lungs and constant contact with the skin. Various effects are visible in case of cobalt poisoning which includes cardiovascular effects, neurological, haematological, immunological, dermatological, ophthalmological, gastrointestinal and reproductive system dysfunction. The biological samples which are analysed for cobalt poisoning includes urine, blood, serum and tissues. The various aspects along with the treatment and hospital management is discussed in this paper. Other than that, the analytical techniques which include HR-ICP-MS, XRF, UV Spectrophotometry, ICP-OES are also discussed which are used in the diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":420042,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical Laboratory Research","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125505587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and methods: In this study a total of 109 subjects were used out of which treated and untreated arthritics were 48 and 44 respectively, the remaining 17 were healthy individuals which were used as control. Samples were collected from patients attending Rheumatology and Orthopedic clinic of Federal Teaching Hospital Ido-ekiti, Ekiti State Nigeria. Antinuclear antibody was estimated using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) while Lupus Erythematosus cells were ascertained microscopically using Leishman staining technique. All parameters were assessed in treated and untreated arthritic patients relative to healthy subjects. Body mass index was also calculated. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS. Results: Body mass index and Antinuclear antibodies were significantly higher in treated and untreated arthritics compared to control (P<0.05). When treated and untreated arthritics were compared, Body mass index and Antinuclear antibody were found to be significantly higher in untreated arthritics (P<0.05). Antinuclear antibody and Age correlated directly in untreated arthritics. Lupus Erythematosus cell prevalence was found to be higher in untreated arthritics having a percentage Lupus Erythematosus test positivity of 6.8% compared to the 2.1% seen in treated arthritics. Conclusion: It was found that Autoimmunity in arthritics can be significantly lowered through treatment with Arthritic drugs, diets, life style modifications over a period of time. The study suggests that Antinuclear antibody and Lupus Erythematosus estimations could be adopted as markers of diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of arthritis.","PeriodicalId":420042,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical Laboratory Research","volume":"5 14","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133169467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study evaluated selected renal markers (urea, creatinine, uric acid and cystatin C) in hypertensive subjects relative to control. A total of 92 subjects were investigated consisting of 31 hypertensive subjects on treatment, 31 hypertensives not on treatment and 30 apparently healthy subjects who served as control subjects. The levels of urea, creatinine and uric acid were determined using spectrophotometric methods while cystatin C was analyzed using enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA) technique. Blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) were also measured in addition to the selected markers. The results showed that urea, uric acid, blood pressure and BMI were significantly higher at p<0.05 while creatinine and cystatin C did not show significant difference (p>0.05) in hypertensive subjects compared with control. It was concluded that urea, uric acid, blood pressure and BMI were significantly high in hypertension. Measurement of these markers could be helpful in identification of patients at high risk of developing renal complications associated with hypertension.","PeriodicalId":420042,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical Laboratory Research","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133996059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Retrospective data of 267 inpatients (cases) with neutropenia and 333 inpatients without neutropenia (normal cases) were consecutively collected from laboratory database of the Italian Hospital of Desio. Subjects with neutropenia caused by chemo- or radiotherapy treatment, myelodysplastic syndromes, chronic liver diseases, and drug-induced had significantly higher rates of infection than normal cases ( p < 0.01). Patients whose neutropenia was caused by autoimmune or idiopathic diseases showed no significant differences ( p > 0.4). Subjects with neutropenia caused by myelodysplastic syndromes or chemo- or radiotherapy treatment had an increased risk of infections from mild and moderate to severe neutropenia ( p trend < 0.0001). Patients affected by myelodysplastic syndromes had a significant shift from urinary to respiratory tract ( p = 0.008) and to systemic infections with positive blood cultures (SI+PBC) ( p = 0.02) compared to normal cases. Subjects with recent chemo-or radiotherapy treatment presented a significant shift only to SI+PBC ( p = 0.01). Collectively, it is important to pay more attention to specific causes of neutropenia and the degree of neutrophils count, which are associated with different risks and sites of the infections.","PeriodicalId":420042,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical Laboratory Research","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133178302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In both type1 and type2 diabetes, several morphological changes occur in the pancreas, but the predominant feature of beta cell loss. Our aim of this study is to find out of histopathological changes in pancreas due to diabetes and correlate it with clinical findings. Methods: A prospective study was done on 50 autopsy specimens of pancreas. Specimens were fixed in formalin and tissue was adequately processed. The sections were stained with routine haematoxylene and eosin stain. Results: In our study 86% cases were of T1DM and 14% of T2DM. Most common age group was between 40-60 years (62% cases). 68% cases had duration of DM of 10-20 years. On histopathological examination, 85% Cases of T1DM revealed cytolysis and inflammation in exocrine pancreas. In cases of T2DM cytolysis was seen in 32% cases, inflammation in 25% and fibrosis in 16% cases.. Fibrosis was present in 14% cases of T1DM and 25% cases of T2DM in endocrine pancreas. Insulitis in endocrine pancreas was seen in 85% cases of T1DM and 34% cases of T2DM. Thus, the most common finding was reduced beta cell mass in T2DM and insulitis in T1DM. Findings were correlated with age, sex and duration of diabetes. Conclusion: With increasing incidence of diabetes knowledge of pathogenesis of changes due to diabetes in pancreas may lead to research of further targeted therapy in better management of diabetes in future. Changes that occur in pancreas due to diabetes are more evident in long standing diabetes and early changes are not evident in routine histopathological sections.","PeriodicalId":420042,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical Laboratory Research","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123115370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: This study investigated a total number of 116 subjects age between 18-70 years comprising 54 hypertensives on known anti HBP medications, 35 hypertensives not on anti HBP medications and 27 apparently healthy individuals. Blood samples were collected from patients attending the General Out-patient Department of Federal Teaching Hospital Ido-ekiti, Ekiti State Nigeria. Blood pressure was taken from the non-dominant amusing appropriate cuff size and mercury sphygmomanometer, while, blood sample was Anti-nuclear antibodies was measured using ELISA while LE cells was ascertained with Leishman-stained microscopy of defibrinated blood. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS, all values were significant at p<0.05. Results: Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were observed to be significantly higher in both treated and untreated essential hypertensives compared with controls (P<0.0001). Serum ANA levels were also found to be significantly higher in untreated hypertensives compared with both treated hypertensives and controls (P<0.0001). Diastolic blood pressure correlated directly with systolic blood pressure and ANA levels in untreated hypertensives (r=0.556) (r=0.318) respectively but inversely with BMI in treated hypertensives. LE cell positivity was found to be higher in untreated hypertensives having a percentage LE test positivity of 2.9% as compared to the percentage in treated hypertensives where 1.9% were positive. Conclusion: It was deduced that serum elevated ANA levels as well as LE positivity are also characteristics of essential hypertension. It was also found out that the possibility of LE positivity and ANA levels in essential hypertensives increases with weight, age and being of the female gender.
