Published in a context in which the travelogue to the United States has already established itself as a literary tradition with an audience, Laforet’s book distinguishes itself from those of its contemporaries by adopting a polyphonic perspective and by thematizing the linguistic aspect of the cultural experience. This article will be divided into three parts: the first part serves as an introduction to travel writing to the United States; the second part focuses on the chronicles published in the 1960s by Josep Pla, Miguel Delibes and Julián Marías, and the third part analyzes Paralelo 35. In this study, we will consider: 1) the set of themes from which the European literary imagery on the United States has been constituted; 2) the use of genres related to autobiography, essay and journalism; 3) the construction of a literary image of the writer, identifiable or comparable with that of the traveler, tourist or interpreter.","PeriodicalId":41881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"274 - 289"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44765187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article builds a statistical and thematic profile of what we know from the scholarship about Latin Americans in Australia, and identifies key areas requiring further attention. Two methods were employed: (1) the first systematic review of the literature published to date on Latin American people in Australia; (2) a quantitative study of Latin Americans in Australia, using data extracted from the Australian Census 2016, and immigration information from 2016 to December 2019. Both focused on the question: “What do we know about the characteristics and adaptations of Latin American migrants in Australia, and what remains to be researched?” While there is considerable literature, many areas have been neglected. The most significant gaps are in the areas of political engagement; health and wellbeing (especially for children, men, and students); student experiences and pathways; gender; and trade and economics.","PeriodicalId":41881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"120 - 143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47463767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tras la realización de nueve entrevistas en profundidad a destacados dirigentes del grupo terrorista, se analizan algunos aspectos vertebradores que legitiman el uso de la violencia política y el terrorismo, tanto en sus orígenes como desde una mirada retrospectiva una vez que ETA ha desaparecido. Asimismo, se muestra la ausencia de arrepentimiento y las dificultades para construir un espacio de reconciliación en el País Vasco. De igual modo, las entrevistas revelan cómo muchas de las cuestiones que motivaron el surgimiento de ETA hoy siguen vigentes y no han desaparecido, 30 más allá del hecho de que el uso de la violencia terrorista no tenga cabida en sociedad vasca.","PeriodicalId":41881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"258 - 273"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45660508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Cambridge Analytica scandal demonstrates how non-state actors can exercise control and bypass individual political autonomy by exploring personal data and through manipulative practices. In Brazil, similar electoral practices occurred during the 2018 election period, in which political propaganda transcended traditional media outlets through social media platforms, such as WhatsApp and Facebook. This arose as one of the consequences of the political reform established in through Legislative Act no. 13.488/2017. This article proposes an investigation into the intersection between knowledge and power in the mechanism of manipulation of political subjects, considering Michel Foucault’s critique of sovereignty, and conflating this under- standing with Bernard Harcourt’s consideration of “digital power.” The aim is to evaluate the intricacies between digital media, politics, and law, addressing the complexity of power structures in the material and cybernetic space.","PeriodicalId":41881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"290 - 309"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45112679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They reflect on class and status while trying to navigate the Australian social structure and position themselves and others in it. Drawing on theories of migration and class, we argue that the participants position themselves in Australian society not only in relation to the local social structure but also through beliefs they have about Colombian social structures, particularly the socioeconomic stratification system. This involves reinterpretation and adaptation of pre-conceptions and beliefs according to the new reality. Further unexpected findings included that English proficiency is crucial to the social mobility and integration of Colombian migrants in Australia. Most respondents perceived education as their best asset, but felt that their chances of success depended on English skills. This research contributes to knowledge of Latin American migrants in Australia and the Colombian socioeconomic stratification system.","PeriodicalId":41881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"182 - 201"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48376625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fujimori’s claim that depression was “for losers” caused a storm on social media, with responses questioning the notion that the politician was emotionally unaffected by the loss. Earlier that month, the latest episode in another, quite different controversy had taken place. Members of an organization responsible for the construction of a mausoleum in Comas—a site branded as pro-Shining Path in the news media—participated in a ceremony honoring those interred at the tomb. This article uses Fujimori’s declaration and discussions surrounding the Comas mausoleum as entry points for considering the relationship between loss, vulnerability, and public discourse in Peru. I argue that expressions of invulnerability offer a useful site for analyzing and critiquing an entrenched refusal to acknowledge the consequences of the country's recent internal war.","PeriodicalId":41881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"223 - 241"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48164395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a broad sense, it entails the exertion of male dominance over others, namely women and other men based on a hypermasculine and heteronormative construction of men as more or less macho/“manly,” and women as either la virgen (virtuous and conservative) or la puta (whore). These binary constructs often impede complexities to surface and thus, discourses used to describe Latin America as machista and Australia as “progressive” need to be considered in the context of the Mexican migratory experience. Through the use of filmic stimuli and a discourse-based approach to identity, the narratives shared by five Mexican migrants living in Sydney elucidate assertions of one social milieu being more liberal than the other and how these are related to perceptions on machismo.","PeriodicalId":41881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"165 - 181"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46538612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This percentage does not consider migrants on temporary visas. This article presents a critical review of 59 single publications. The findings suggest, firstly, that while the literature shows qualitative analysis of Latin American cultural practices, communities and gender, the study of migration flows is dominated by quantitative approaches that are focused mainly on permanent settlement. Secondly, while there have been several studies attempting to understand and problematize a homogenous Latin American identity in Australia, there is still little research exploring the heterogeneous cultural, social and economic experiences of migrants from these diverse regions. Finally, this review highlights the need to conduct quantitative and qualitative studies to explore Latin American temporary migration in Australia, examining how the increase of temporary visas is intersecting with the everyday life of these migrants.","PeriodicalId":41881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"202 - 220"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43108174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examina cómo performances musicales ligadas a las tradiciones y resistencia cultural afrodescendientes despliegan capas de significados y temporalidades que disputan narrativas y olvidos hegemónicos. Para ello, revisa la historia del candombe en ambas orillas del Río de la Plata (Uruguay y Argentina) y luego focaliza en la relación entre memorias y candombe en tres desarrollos que tienen lugar en Buenos Aires.
