A Zambian mother, to cite one instance, lost her twenty-one-year-old daughter. To nurture and ease her into the world of ancestors, a family member must take in her spirit. The mother ’ s husband agreed to this. The result is that the mother ’ s husband is also her daughter, and sister and father to the rest of their children. In various social, religious, and political contexts, individuals who were anatomically or socially one identity could, through social actions or spiritual transitions, embody various gen-ders intersecting from one world, one life stage, or one social title to the next. Less acclaimed, however, is the fact that she employed her musical abilities in the service of a globally expanding political agenda. During her reign, elaborate keyboard instruments were dispatched to foreign rulers in order to cultivate strategic diplomatic and commercial relationships. Two organs were gifted through theMuscovy and Levant Companies, intended to solidify English alliances with the Russian and Ottoman Empires. The choice of an organ in both instances highlights the desirability of keyboard instruments in the global marketplace, especially as these lavish gifts reflected Elizabeth’s majestic status and the viability of England as a trading and diplomatic partner. A gilt and enameled organ was transported to Russia when Russia had minimal connection to the Anglo world; the goal of this present was to cement ties with the newly crowned Tsar Feodor I, son of Ivan “the Terrible.” Elizabeth later gifted another organ—this time, to Mehmed III, who had also succeeded his father as sultan of the Ottoman Empire several years earlier. Its expansive musical range, animatronic trumpeters, clock, and nest of singing blackbirds made this organ constructed by Thomas Dallam especially magnificent. Born in Bologna, she received her education in the household of the D’Este family in Ferrara and returned to Bologna as abbess of the convent of Poor Clares in the church of Corpus Domini. She was a visual artist, wrote and illuminated her own breviary, and penned laudas, stories, and poetry.While musicologists have examined her violeta, they have yet to investigate the sonic world evoked in her I dodici giardini (Twelve gardens). While perhaps not Orsino’s intention, this now-famous metaphor underscores an enduring partnership between music and food.Whether singing broadside ballads at public houses and taverns; entertaining guests at social, diplomatic, and business feasts; or singing daily prayers at family meals, early modern conviviality involved music and food in concert—both could satiate body and soul. One source for early modern bodily care through consumables is the manuscript recipe book, compiling handwritten instructions to make food and medicine.
