The text is generally agreed to be “AMeditation of a Penitent Sinner: Written in Maner of a Paraphrase vpon the 51. Psalme of Dauid.” Noted for its evocation of the claustrophobic mental state of its titular sinner, it consists of twenty-six sonnets, five of which are prefatory and twenty-one of which paraphrase a prose translation of Psalm 51 included in the margin alongside the verses. In addition to being the first sonnet sequence in English, the “Meditation”","PeriodicalId":41850,"journal":{"name":"Early Modern Women-An Interdisciplinary Journal","volume":"27 1","pages":"213 - 236"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80326278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three of Catherine’s sons became king of France following the death of their father, Henry II, in 1559: Francis II (1559–1560), Charles IX (1560–1574), and Henry III (1574–1589). Francis’s wife, Mary, has received significant scholarly attention, albeit primarily because she was queen of Scotland in her own right. By contrast, Elisabeth d’Austria, consort to Charles IX, and Louise de Lorraine-Vaudémont, consort to Henry III, remain largely obscure denizens of the French sixteenth-century court. Born on 30 April 1553, Louise was the daughter of Nicholas de Lorraine, Count de Vaudémont and later Duke de Mercoeur, and Marguerite d’Egmont, who died when Louise was just eleven months old. Addressing Prince Giovan Carlo de’Medici in the dedicatory letter to her 1639 Lettere amorose, she recalls how cruel twists of fortune beset her life with sorrow before her arrival on Tuscan shores. Now among the verdant fields of Medicean Florence, she was inspired by a vision of Amor to write about love in all of its many guises. She filled her “sigh-filled pages” with the contradictory highs and lows of human affections: war and peace, joy and pain, amusement and heartache. Posing here as Hercules, there as Mars, and then Venus, ventriloquizing bothmale and female voices, she added lyrics to her epistles to move even the most hardened of hearts. Included among her claims to instruct Love’s servants are promises to deliver scherzi, here understood as jokes or playful banter, signaling Costa’s engagement with humorous subjects virtually unprecedented in","PeriodicalId":41850,"journal":{"name":"Early Modern Women-An Interdisciplinary Journal","volume":"57 1","pages":"265 - 288"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73289244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
