Efforts to such effects in a field therefore often make noble use of “great authors” and their leading publications or the “great moments” of rupture, which are often proclaimed rather than effective, and with which I have engaged in the first section of this article. Such materials are of prime importance; however they often contribute to the building of a “mundane” history prioritizing a representation of science that is heroic (emphasizing the leading names to have made decisive contributions to the evolution of science) or paradigmatic (organizing history in terms of a succession of greater scientific events demonstrating an indisputable evolution). Rather than challenging the significance of these two ways of shaping and retelling history, in the second section of the article I present an alternative method and the results produced. Despite those who would contest the scientific basis for this method, it allows us to go beyond the linear and cumulative reconstructions according to which “the timeline of the history of ideas is merely the development of acquisitions”. Although harnessed at the beginning of the Cold War (at the end of the 1940s and beginning of the 1950s), the subject was never unanimously agreed upon among the UN’s members, exceeding the boundaries of the debate on international peace and security. It is thus by considering the political, economic, and ideological interests fighting for the hegemony in the international organization that this article aims to analyze the emergence of the debate on human rights, with a particular focus on the appropriation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in certain sectors of Brazilian society at the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century. Running from 1912 to 1916, the war involved large numbers of low-income farmers, squatters, farmhands, and troopers in their struggles against landowners, the government, and the Sao Paulo-Rio Grande Railroad Company. Judicial sources are analyzed as a means of accessing important information on life, politics, and the social and economic relations on the plateau, as are the actions of lawyers, rabulas [paralegals], delegates, prosecutors, and judges throughout the conflict, both in terms of their intermediation in political matters, as well as their role in the criminal proceedings of rebellious leaders. Coelho","doi":"10.15175/1984-2503-20179104","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15175/1984-2503-20179104","url":null,"abstract":"This article discusses the political-religious clash between Alfredo Freyre – father of the historian-sociologist Gilberto Freyre – and the so-called “Catholic Reaction” movement in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco from 1910 to 1930. Professor Alfredo Freyre was a Jansenist Catholic and Freemason, opposing the political project to implement religious education in schools defended by the Jesuits, who were the main architects of the Catholic Reaction movement in Brazil and in Recife. We discuss alliances between Jansenists, Protestants and Freemasons that went up against the political hegemony of the Roman Catholic Church in Brazil, considering the theory that Alfredo Freyre’s actions represented the internal struggle in the Catholic camp among antagonistic movements and groups, particularly between Jansenists and Jesuits, with education playing a key role in the balance of power. We therefore approach the political and religious interface in order to demonstrate how religious culture affects political culture, with decisive ramifications on the social sphere.
