The object propose to study these phenomena is the Winton guest house, designed between 1982 and 1985. The oeuvre is considered a key work in the evolution of the architect’s creative process and was defined by Philip Johnson as the ‘80s archetype house. The small building has been addressed by critics (and its author, too) to considerations of a work of art, a sculpture. In 2008 the small house was dismantled and transferred to a new location to serve as exhibition space. However, it was auctioned in 2015 and will again be disassembled and transferred to another location and will serve another use, both remain unknown. This transformation of the house into a “mobile object”, much like a sculpture than a house, can be regarded as a statement of its current existence as a work of art, the paper, however, takes this discussion to the time of work pregnancy in order to better understand the paths trodden by the architect to design such an oeuvre. This process of appropriation of space by the user indicates the construction of a sense of belonging, which can be concretely expressed through physical changes. These appropriations may also indicate risks to achieving the objectives expected by housing programs, such as: (i) conflicts in the neighborhood; (ii) lack of comfort and livability in housing; (iii) lack of security in common areas, and; (iv) lack of sanitation in housing allotments. This article aims to identify and map the territorialities expressed as concrete appropriations through physical changes in public and private spaces in three social housing estates belonging to the Programa Integrado Entrada da Cidade (PIEC). The empirical study consisted in the elaboration of a questionnaire, observations “in loco”, sample design, and data collection and analysis. For data analysis, it was used descriptive statistics techniques and graphic mappings. The main contributions of this research are the identification, categorization, and mapping of the different forms of territoriality existent in the EHIS investigated. Moreover, the territorialities analyzed along with the percentage of permanence of the residents indicated new ways of comprehending the impacts on the quality of life of these users, as well as for monitoring the results of investments in social housing in Brazil. Estas sao realizadas por pessoas com distintos niveis de familiaridade com o Museu do Louvre (brasileiros e franceses), e com diferentes faixas etarias, niveis e tipos de escolaridade. Estas avaliacoes sao complementadas por analises com base na estetica empirica e uso dos espacos. Os dados foram coletados atraves de questionarios, em portugues e em frances, apresentados atraves de carta, via e-mail, com orientacoes e com endereco de acesso ao Programa LimeSurvey, para pessoas no Brasil e na Franca. A amostra total foi de 128 respondentes que ja haviam visitado o Museu do Louvre. Os dados foram analisados atraves de frequencias das respostas e de testes estatisticos nao-parametricos no programa SPSS. Os resultados revelam, por exemplo, que a expressiva maioria dos respondentes acha a aparencia externa do Museu do Louvre com a Pirâmide muito satisfatoria. As principais razoes estao associadas: ao contraste da Pirâmide com o antigo Museu e consequente estimulo visual; e ao fato da Pirâmide valorizar visualmente o antigo Museu. Ainda, a clara maioria dos respondentes prefere o Museu do Louvre com a Pirâmide do que sem a Pirâmide. Logo, os resultados indicam, com base nas percepcoes de usuarios do Museu, a adequacao estetica e de uso do Projeto do ‘Le Grand Louvre’. Vergara","doi":"10.4013/ARQ.2016.121.05","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4013/ARQ.2016.121.05","url":null,"abstract":"The teaching of architecture is based on the integral formation of students through the project, in which the teaching learning process begins with an introduction to the form and to the three-dimensional space – to the human scale – as a proper matter of the discipline. In this research-action-teaching, we propose to create the basis for a new educational model for the initial workshop, taking as a reference the experience of two great masters of the 20th century: Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, based on the geometry and the primary forms as a common nature of the structure of all things in the universe. For this we propose to strategically introduce an experimental unit where students learn how to get to know and apply fundamental notions of the forms by applying bio-tools and using platonic solids as primary or fundamental forms in the sacred or harmonic geometry, which incorporates the current biological basis and a holistic approach to the process of teaching-learning. After systematizing the experience we concluded that the use of fundamental solids and the development of the geometries of the second order in the project action, which we called game of the harmonics, allow developing progressively more complex actions of perception, manipulation and combination of form, materializing abstract ideas and creating spatial patterns in a particularly way in terms of composition-scale, material-technique and use-functionality. The model also allows that each part of the game of the project refers in a holistic way to the same fundamental structure, favoring in education a reconnection of students with their own nature, conscious of being part of the universal whole. Robles","doi":"10.4013/ARQ.2016.121.09","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4013/ARQ.2016.121.09","url":null,"abstract":"Based on the recognition of the fundamental influence of industrial architecture on modern urbanism, we proceed to study two evolutionary storylines that are based on two separate industrial buildings designed by Albert Kahn for the Ford Motor Company. These two storylines include cross-appropriations and influences between two architectural fields: industrial complexes and university campuses. These transfers between the two fields will lead modern urbanism to the consolidation of the new type of “technology campus” as a basis for the creation of the high-tech industrial complex of the 21st century. These evolutionary paths are analyzed through the study of the works of four architects: Albert Kahn, Eero Saarinen, Mies and Hilberseimer, whose work is related and mutually fertilized by a number of influences and cross-transfers. In turn, the two lines converge in Hilberseimer-Mies’ urban proposals for the city of Detroit and, mediated by the presence of Kahn in the USSR, in Soviet de-urbanists’ proposals. Both approaches mixed, in a utopian way, industrial planning not only with educational uses, but also with the rest of the city. This research, however, refers to a very specific aspect within this complex transportation system: bus stops. Its main objective is to evaluate the contribution of design process based on emotion-driven approaches on bus stop concept development. It presents three separate methodological steps and their respective results: (step 1) a preliminary in loco observation followed by a first design workshop; (step 2) an in-loco analysis of users’ emotional experiences when using public transport; and (step 3) the application of this information in design workshops. The first step provided a general view of the phenomenon and fed the design process with inputs from real-world situations. The second step was based on Appraisal Theory (Desmet, 2008) and helped the researchers to understand that the most important emotions to work on would be anxiety and irritation, as well as the concerns that would trigger then on users. The third step, a three-day design workshop, was developed with the participation of 23 designers, divided into four groups. Three bus stop concepts, inspired by the experience-design analysis, were developed and are presented in this paper. The main results showed that all the designed solutions were able to offer alternatives to prevent unpleasant emotions, namely anxiety and irritation, based on a user-centered approach. The research also reinforced the view that, although it is not possible to design emotions, it is possible to design tangible conditions where emotions can be avoided or reinforced. Several of these interventions have been developed in low-income areas, especially in squatter settlements, on the grounds of safety and urban integration, and the Complexo do Alemao is one of them. A very important urban design and public program happened in the so-called Complexo do Alemao, a set of adjoining favelas. This article analyses the mobility structure of cable cars created in that area and the problems associated with it, particularly the residual spaces originated around the pillars that support the structure. Its organization consists of a general contextualization of the case and a specific observation of some of the mentioned areas. The observation process is based on regular field visits and interviews. The article is based on theories that examine the relationship between the formal and the informal city, where the interests of fractions of capital, especially of infrastructure and real estate, predominate over social concerns. Thus, approaches such as those of J. Jacobs, R. Sennett, J. Gehl, E. Kent, among others, become relevant and should be incorporated in proposals that intend to improve the quality of urban space and turn it into a place of exchange and collective participation. That will give a new meaning to these residual spaces in the favelas. The paper concludes that despite the conflicts and risks associated with this intervention, some positive potentials can also be verified, although unplanned and less visible, related to the residual spaces. It also concludes that government policies should assume and understand the spaces as a possibility for an alternative, more participatory and inclusive planning.
