These defects are not usually surgically reconstructed, but rather rehabilitated by using facial and intraoral prostheses. This type of rehabilitation requires a higher level of practical skill and a longer time manufacturing the 3 combined prostheses than that of a conventional or individual prosthesis.

One of the most important challenges when making the prosthetic rehabilitation in these patients is for it to be accepted by them, as many of them tend to have very high aesthetic expectations. Another big problem is that during the chewing process, facial prostheses have a constant motion that could affect stability if adhesives are the only means of retention. To prevent this, a careful design of both prostheses is required, using various forms of retention for the rehabilitation. To achieve success, the rehabilitation must meet the principles of support, retention and stability required to make it functional, and to allow the reintegration of the patient into the social, familiar and work environment.

This case is presented of a 67 year-old male patient, who underwent a left maxillectomy procedure including an orbital exenteration and a histological diagnosis of invasive squamous cell carcinoma. A surgical maxillary obturator was constructed, with subsequent monitoring and intraoral rehabilitation to enable the patient to use a transitional obturator and a facial prosthesis with physical and chemical retention. Eyeglasses were used with the only objective of camouflaging the facial prosthesis.

","PeriodicalId":41581,"journal":{"name":"Gaceta Mexicana de Oncologia","volume":"15 5","pages":"Pages 312-317"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.gamo.2016.09.006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"137339308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the assumption that the body image and the sexuality is associated with traditional ideas about being a woman, especially women living in a rural and semi-rural environment. In that context the exercise of sexuality is considered like a sin and it is not recognised as a dimension of human development, or an aspect of quality of life.

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 women participants diagnosed with some form of breast cancer, and treated in the State of Nayarit Cancer Centre. The EORT-C30 and QLQ-BR23 questionnaires were used to evaluate quality of life, body image and sexual functioning.

The most important outcomes point to sexuality being an avoided issue, both for the patients and medical oncologists. Myths and taboos persist regarding sexuality and motherhood; women said that the area was unimportant for them. Marital relationships cause stress, anxiety and worry that add to the struggle for survival with cancer, thus the psycho-oncological care should focus on these aspects to improve the quality of life.

","PeriodicalId":41581,"journal":{"name":"Gaceta Mexicana de Oncologia","volume":"15 5","pages":"Pages 278-284"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.gamo.2016.09.003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"137339306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
