This article first examines how Italian scholars have understood and engaged with fundamental issues in the history of the Russian language, which have been at the centre of discussion on an international level. It then explores the advances made in Italian research on historical grammar and emphasises the peculiarity of the approach to textual criticism developed by Italian scholars and its relevance to Russian philology. Finally, the paper discusses major Italian contributions regarding specific issues in Russian diachronic linguistics and philology, which reveal innovative solutions to long-standing problems. While further exploration is necessary in several areas, in qualitative terms, the hitherto accomplished research cannot but be positively assessed.","PeriodicalId":41566,"journal":{"name":"Studi Slavistici","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141657399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Issues analyzed in this survey include (but are not limited to) the meanings of the perfective and imperfective aspects, actionality, the role of prefixes and suffixes in the grammaticalization of aspect, the interaction between aspect and other verbal categories, and the pragmatic uses of aspect. Moreover, the diachronic and typological perspectives are considered as well as the acquisitional perspective. Verbal aspect is explored in a group of Slavic languages, including Russian, Czech, Polish, Bulgarian, Serbian, Croatian, Slovenian, and Resian. It is argued that further research on verbal aspect in other Slavic languages can shed a new light on this issue.","PeriodicalId":41566,"journal":{"name":"Studi Slavistici","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141657240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the initial phase of Landolfi’s activity, the profound influence of Renato Poggioli becomes evident. This is exemplified by Landolfi’s translations from the 1930s and 1940s, as well as the rigid prescriptions expressed in his reviews of books translated by others. Subsequently, Landolfi undergoes a phase of re-evaluation, as evidenced by his review of Ripellino’s ‘literal’ translations and, most notably, by his first volume of translations of Pushkin (Einaudi 1960). In this book, Landolfi explores a wide range of strategies, particularly regarding the metrical organisation of the texts, without adhering to one specific approach. Ultimately, in his last two books of translations, Landolfi successfully amalgamates the contrasting models of Poggioli and Ripellino, culminating in the development of his own distinctive strategy.","PeriodicalId":41566,"journal":{"name":"Studi Slavistici","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141655835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

De Vivo’s 1882 Russian grammar, commissioned by the publisher Schnakenburg in Dorpat, the first grammar of the Russian language published in Italy dates back to 1897 (Voinovich) and was published in Milan by Hoepli. In the 20th century, the elaboration of volumes aimed at teaching Russian progressively evolved in Italy, in accordance with the new direction that glottodidactics was developing, moving away from the grammatical-translative method and embracing communicative approaches. It is, however, in the last three decades that we have witnessed a surprising flowering in quantity and quality. The article begins with an overview of the types of aids and manuals for Russian language teaching published in Italy in the last thirty years, highlighting the objectives achieved and the possible aspects to be strengthened, and then provides      some reflections on the perspectives of further development that are already evident.","PeriodicalId":41566,"journal":{"name":"Studi Slavistici","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141655756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although these names have a clear etymology from a purely linguistic point of view, it is unknown whether they are of Christian or pagan origin, and if they were created by an individual – presumably Saint Cyril or Methodius – or arose more naturally. The paper examines the Slavic day-names in relation to other European languages and attempts to recreate the development process of the Slavic week from its supposedly pre-Christian beginnings to its final form that we know from written Slavic languages. The evidence shows that the Slavic names of the days of the week developed over a longer period, starting in pre-Christian times and introducing Christian elements through contact with neighboring cultures along the way. It also excludes the possibility of their creation by an individual, while leaving room to speculate about the original form of the Slavic week.","PeriodicalId":41566,"journal":{"name":"Studi Slavistici","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141656769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
