Audio and video quality, as perceived by the users, is one of the most important aspects that affect the Quality of Experience. The most accurate methods for measuring the perceived audio and video quality of a video clip are the subjective tests, where the video sequences are presented to different viewers, and opinions are averaged. Subjective measurements are also necessary to develop and calibrate objective models for video quality estimation. Different methods for performing these tests are standardized, and normally require many manual setups, data-entry and/or special hardware devices. This paper presents the design, development and deployment of a software based system to automate the subjective tests for video quality measurement. The application is available for download and use for the academic community.","PeriodicalId":415618,"journal":{"name":"International Latin American Networking Conference","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132048287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The network has nodes acting as secondary users (SUs) of time slots originally assigned to some other primary users (PUs). SUs are only allowed to access unused time slots, and they do so by using the slotted-Aloha medium access control (MAC) protocol under the same access probability. ps is derived and shown to be substantially impacted due to the hidden terminals which is proposed according to a given spatial node density. Also, ps goes to zero with the increase in the number of SUs, while the limiting maximum network throughput is found to be a constant equal to 1/e as in the case of the classic slotted-Aloha, regardless of the value for the deadline for the message.","PeriodicalId":415618,"journal":{"name":"International Latin American Networking Conference","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132613452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also presents the main properties of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR). Large PAPR is one of drawbacks in OFDM system. Two techniques - Selected Mapping (SLM) and Partial Transmit Sequence (PTS) -- are shown to reduce the PAPR in the OFDM signal. The techniques were simulated on Matlab having as goal the reduction on the PAPR and consequently the battery consumption on the reception device. Finally, a comparison with other techniques are shown to prove the effectiveness of the SLM and PTS.","PeriodicalId":415618,"journal":{"name":"International Latin American Networking Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132854003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a consequence, the characterization of this buffer is interesting, especially when real-time flows of interactive services are being transmitted. If the buffer characteristics are known, then different techniques can be used so as to adapt the traffic: multiplexing a number of small packets into a big one or fragmentation.\u0000 This work presents a study of how to determine the technical and functional characteristics of the buffer of a certain device (e.g. size, input and output rate and others characteristics related to its behaviour), or even in a remote node. Two different methodologies are considered, and tested on two real scenarios which have been implemented; real measurements permit the estimation of the buffer size, and the input and output rates, when we have physical or remote access to the \"System Under Test\". In case of having physical access, the maximum number of packets in the queue can be determined by counting. In contrast, if the node is remote, its buffer size can be estimated. We have obtained accurate results in wired and wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":415618,"journal":{"name":"International Latin American Networking Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114429498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, 3D-video is envisioned to attract more and more the multimedia market with the perspective for enhanced applications (video surveillance, mission critical control, entertainment, etc.). However, 3D-video content delivery places increased bandwidth demands, as well as have rigorous Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) requirements for efficient support. This paper proposes a novel QoE-aware packet controller mechanism, which aims at connecting real-time 3D-video streaming applications over congested wireless networks with acceptable levels of QoS and QoE over the time. Simulation experiments were carried out to show the impact and benefit of our proposal. Subjective and objective QoE metrics were used for benchmarking, showing that in congestion periods our solution improves the quality level of real-time 3D-video sequences from the user point-of-view, as well as, optimizes the usage of wireless network resources.","PeriodicalId":415618,"journal":{"name":"International Latin American Networking Conference","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127534573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communication in such scenarios may be susceptible to long interruptions, and as a consequence we must employ DTN-based (Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networks) communication protocols. Existing routing approaches suitable for emergency scenarios tend to consume a large amount of resources, due to the stochastic behavior of node movement. This paper has two contributions. First, we propose a resource-efficient DTN routing protocol, called HIerarquical Group ROuting Protocol (HIGROP). HIGROP aims to reduce the forwarding overhead by the use of node clusters, while maximizing the message delivery rate. The second contribution is the definition of a new mobility model, called MME, which emulates the movement patterns of first responders in search and rescue scenarios. We compared HIGROP against Epidemic and Prophet protocols and noticed that it is scalable and has a lower communication overhead.","PeriodicalId":415618,"journal":{"name":"International Latin American Networking Conference","volume":"1004 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116239183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These new real-time Applications require a reliable performance of the network so as to provide a good Quality of Service (QoS) so it is important for the services providers to estimate the quality offered; and regardless of the transport network to know the quality perceived by the user. For this it is important to have tools to evaluate the quality of service provided. This paper presents a system for IPTV quality assessment. This will allow us to study the user's perceived quality for different codecs, bit rates, frame rates and video resolutions, and the impact of the network packet loss rate, in order to determine the objective and subjective quality. We propose an application simulating packet loss as a function of network parameters, which can be used to obtain the received video with different network impairments, without the need for transmitting it. It has two main advantages: first, it avoids the need of transmitting the video a number of times; second, it allows test repeatability.","PeriodicalId":415618,"journal":{"name":"International Latin American Networking Conference","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129808479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we statistically analyze the data length of the first few segments exchanged by a transport flow. This traffic classification method may be useful for early traffic identification in real time, since it takes into account only the beginning of the flow and therefore it can be used to trigger on-line actions. This work proposes the use of a supervised machine learning method for traffic identification based on Support Vector Machines (SVM). We compare the SVM classification accuracy with a more classical centroid based approach, obtaining good results. We also propose an improvement of the classification accuracy preformed by one single SVM model, introducing a weighted voting scheme of the verdicts of a sequence of SVM models. This sequence is generated by means of the boosting technique and the proposed method improves the classification accuracy of poorly classified classes without noticeable detriment of the other traffic classes. This work analyzes the behavior of both TCP and UDP transport protocols.","PeriodicalId":415618,"journal":{"name":"International Latin American Networking Conference","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127590092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
