The performance of cross-linked polyethylene, XLPE, and high-molecular weight polyethylene insulation, HMWPE was determined and fitted inverse power curves for both insulation types predict AC breakdown strengths in excess of operating stress at thirty years life. Testing entire runs of field-aged cables showed that an AC breakdown test on a single section is most likely to produce the average and not the lowest value. The testing demonstrates that a better diagnostic is needed to help prioritize cable replacement. Attempts to convert the field-aged XLPE and HMWPE cable AC breakdown data to single cumulative distribution functions were only successful for very limited cases. The field history could not be incorporated into the transformation. A replacement program based on one manufacturer's distribution function whose cables were the oldest submitted for test and failed the earliest would be very conservative.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. A boundary condition connecting a heat balance of heat generation due to the leakage current flow and heat loss to environment by convection and heat conduction to insulating material has been investigated. The model applies the Boundary Element Method (BEM) for the thermal calculations as well as Surface Charge Simulation Method (SCSM) and Discrete Charge Simulation (DSC) techniques for the electrical calculations. As an example, the model is applied to a polluted cylindrical insulator supporting a high-voltage (HV) electrode above the ground plane. The results are compared with another model where the heat loss to the insulating material has been ignored.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Both DC (negative-corona conditions) and AC voltages were used, the applied voltage-values being chosen close to corona threshold. The test cell was filled at 500 kPa and the gap length, fixed at 5 mm. The present paper focuses on the pulse characteristics, as observed by recording real-time sequences via a fast digitizer. The high-resolution sampling has given a detailed access to the time relation between consecutive pulses. Emphasis of measurements was put on the DC conditions, while comparison of some AC results is offered. The large data set obtained under DC conditions allowed to establish the existence of a discharge regime and to characterize it quantitatively. In the AC-situation, the discharge events showed similar traits, but pulse parameters differed in magnitude, and stochasticity was different.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The capacitive sensors using metal foil were installed at the appropriated position of joints and terminations. With high frequency PD measurement, an excellent sensitivity below 10 pC could be achieved on on-site (unshielded long distance) conditions. The high frequency PD measurement technique was proven to be an effective diagnostic method for qualification of EHV cable accessories. With this technique, the reliability of the cable system, especially on cable accessories, can be verified on-site condition.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. This well-known technique is here applied to the study of an electrode-charged polyethylene (PE) and a corona-poled Poly(vinylidene Fluoride) (PVDF) sample. The experimental set-up is first described, and theoretical aspects of LIMM fundamentals are reminded. Then, difficulties encountered during LIMM pyroelectric current deconvolution are discussed, and space charge and polarization profiles are shown.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The corresponding results are presented here. They show two zones of different luminosity. The development of them are very different. Zone 2, the darker of the two, is nearer the ground electrode, whereas the zone 1, the brighter one, is behind it starting from the HV electrode and has a better defined outline. At the onset of the flashover in its first phase, the zone 2 spreads faster than the zone 1. Later, in a shorter second phase, the zone 1 develops more quickly and progressively overruns the zone 2. Thereafter, suddenly the flashover is completed. We comment on these results and suggest an explanation.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. However, the observed signal was an incomprehensible signal. To understand the observed signal, a measurement of the glass material with a PET film, which was used as a suppression layer for charge injection, was carried out. From this measurement, it is found that hetro space charges were accumulated in glass material under DC stress. One of the reasons for the incomprehensible signal is thought to be a mismatch of acoustic impedance. Therefore, in this paper, the analysis of observed acoustic signal was carried out by calculating the signal ratio at the interface between the sample and electrodes.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. In high voltage applications, it can be exposed to very high electrical field stress, resulting in long term exposure to low-level corona at stresses much below dielectric breakdown threshold. The surface degradation of low density polyethylene insulators under high electrical stress has been investigated using several surface techniques in conjunction with discharge current measurements. Degradation studies have been conducted in air with a relative humidity of 50%. Electrical diagnostics have included discharge measurements with both pulse (partial discharge) and direct current (dc) components. Changes in the surface morphology have been characterized by surface analysis techniques, which include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) roughness measurements. Antioxidant performance for thermal stabilization of thermoplastics is well established through tests such as Oxidative Induction Time tests. The utility of antioxidants for retardation of electrical degradation is also investigated. Proposed chemical mechanisms for electric field induced degradation are similar to chemical mechanisms for thermally induced degradation. The performance of antioxidants as high electrical stress stabilizers will be reported, as measured by XPS.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Metal-electrodes are always covered with oxide-layers, changing the electrical and chemical properties of the metal-surface. Semiconducting metal-oxide structures arise at the surface. For experiments, oxide covered metal electrodes are dipped into the liquid. A double layer-structure with an inner and outer Helmholtz plane and a subsequent diffuse layer are established at the metal-oxide-liquid interface. Charge transport from and into the liquid is controlled by the electrical properties of the metal-oxide-double-layer structure. Streamer inception modifies the structure of these surface layers and leads to restructuring at the interface and in the liquid bulk. A model for the behaviour of the metal-oxide-liquid interface using percolation theory concepts is presented as well as experimental investigations of surface structures of electrodes used in experiments. Oxide layers found on brass electrodes as well as the impact of streamer inception on electrode surfaces is presented.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
