When the applied voltage is constant the ball bounces regularly on the lower electrode. The minimum voltage for lift-off, as well as the time of flight between contacts, depends on the charge acquired by the ball during the contact with the electrode. The experiments have been done with liquids of different conductivities and we have found that there is no influence of the conductivity on the lift-off voltages. We have also registered and studied the current pulses produced when the ball gets in contact with the lower electrode.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The investigations were carried out by analyzing the leakage current magnitude, the phase angle current-voltage, the flashover process and leakage current characteristics. Because the recorded current waveforms include too many distortions, we have elaborated a numerical tool treating the leakage current signal allowing one to determine its frequency spectra using the discrete Fourier transform. The phase angle is determined from voltage and current phase spectra or also from the angles of their fundamentals.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. If high-energy charged particles penetrate into the Pockels crystal and accumulate in it, 2-dimensional birefringence properties are formed in the crystal. In this paper, we introduce the experimental results of measured space charge distribution in the crystal produced due to corona discharges instead of cosmic rays.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. This paper deals with the study of the behavior of the electric discharge path in air when an alternating voltage is applied to a rod-plane configuration. With the purpose of determining how the electrode separation affects the distribution of the impact points of the electric discharges, the statistical methods used were the experimental design and the hypothesis contrast. The experimental work was carried out up to one hundred centimeters of electrode separation taking into account the environmental conditions. Three different behaviors were obtained for the intervals of 30-35, 40-60 and 80-100 cm of electrode separation with significant differences among the mean distances of the impact points in reference to the center point of the rod-plane configuration, but the differences inside these intervals were not relevant.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. One of these methods is the return voltage measurement (RVM) method, which was initially introduced as a diagnostic method for oil-paper insulating systems. It is mostly used to determine the condition of the paper insulation of transformer windings. It has been shown that it is possible to use RVM for detection of water trees in XLPE cables. In this paper, a methodology is presented that allows the detection of water trees in PE and XLPE insulated cables, without the need for a reference measurement. Also, the influence of temperature on RVM measurements was examined, for cables with and without water trees.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Gamma irradiated and peroxide crosslinked specimens are characterized through dc space charge observations, as well as ac electric strength and oxidation induction time measurements. Similar results, in terms of space charge accumulation and electric strength, are found for specimens having the same gel fraction and obtained by chemical and radiation cross-linking, while longer oxidation times are derived for the latter. This confirms the interest in investigating deeply the possibilities related to gamma radiation crosslinking of polymeric energy cables.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The streamer discharges on the XLPE have been measured simultaneously in order to investigate the relation between the space charge and discharge current. Under high AC voltages, the discharge increases to the critical point, but no more increase is shown over the critical point. The voltage and discharge pattern is resolved by space charge. This result indicates that the frequency effect and space charge characteristics of the dielectric material are dominant in the dielectric-barrier-discharge.","PeriodicalId":414762,"journal":{"name":"2000 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
