In respect of gender and from a cultural and generational perspective, the research aims to shed light on the figure and role of grandfathers, who have long been overshadowed by their spouses – the grandmothers. As author (2010) and Mann et al. (2013) highlight, changes at both the demographic and social level have contributed to grandfathers playing an increasingly important role in the lives of their grandchildren.It is important to underscore the originality of this research, since little attention has been paid to date to this area of research; indeed, the invisibility of the grandfather’s role almost underpins a false belief in its non-existence. It must also be stressed that this is the first comparative, transnational analysis of this type.The qualitative analysis reveals generational idiosyncratic characteristics among the grandfathers studied here and their own grandfathers, in Mexico and Spain, as well as a change in traditional gender roles, with certain country-specific nuances. In all the cases studied grandfathers interviewed express feeling a state of happiness. In addition, it can be appreciated a perception of a break with the role’s characteristic of the own grandparents.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48367275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Estos cambios propiciaron una desigual inclusión digital de las personas mayores, evidenciando brechas de acceso y uso de TIC. De allí que nos preguntamos cómo la población mayor utiliza, percibe y se apropia de las nuevas tecnologías. Utilizamos una estrategia cualitativa combinando 16 entrevistas semidirigidas y dos grupos focales con personas de 60 y más años, residentes en el noreste del Gran Buenos Aires. Los principales hallazgos muestran que el celular es el dispositivo más utilizado. Predomina la idea de que las competencias digitales se encuentran determinadas por la edad (nativos versus inmigrantes digitales). Durante la pandemia, muchas personas se instruyeron en el uso de plataformas y dispositivos en tiempo récord. Más de la mitad de las personas mayores del estudio son usuarios avezados, con un uso variado de las TIC, pendientes siempre de aggiornarse. Si bien es alentador, la otra mitad aún identifica brechas y dificultades que impiden un uso pleno de las TIC lo que cercena el acceso a derechos claves para la inclusión digital y social.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45651750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The elderly are a group of people who should especially take care of their health. Taking up this issue is justified by the rising life expectancy of the society and the related increasing costs of social care. Considering the current situation, it seems required to provide the older generation with education in the field of health promotion and health behaviour. The study involved 689 individuals over 60 years of age from Poland. A diagnostic survey was applied in the research. A survey technique was used including the Health Behaviour Inventory (HBI) and own questionnaire. Elderly people have more health behaviour associated with prophylactic measures and a positive mental attitude, but least related to eating habits. Women, people over 75 years of age and better educated people with good financial standing adopt significantly more health behaviour. The subject concerning health behaviour of elderly people needs to be further explored and completed. This study may contribute to better quality of life in elderly population.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45515320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Findings presented in this paper suggest that married elders are the least lonely group, while never-married elders come thereafter, better than widowed, divorced, and separated elders. Overall, while married individuals are the happiest and the least lonely of all groups, marriage, on average, ends up with less benign results in late stages of life. The discussion part in this paper suggests that these findings might fit with the “greedy marriage” argument that long-term never-married people develop social skills and circles over time, which allows them to be more immune to loneliness and depression than widowed, divorced, and separated elders.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44584034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the digital divide is a dynamic problem, shifting from physical access to skills and usage, public policies to close the divide do not necessary follow. This study explores who is providing digital support in Sweden by looking at three institutions: (1) the municipal eldercare system, (2) popular education institutions, and (3) the family. The results show that the Swedish policy rely heavily on popular education and family arrangements, leaving many young-old Swedes in need of digital support without public support, while the opposite occurs for very old Swedes who are mostly consumers of welfare technologies. Issues of dependency/independency arise. Given this, the role to the Swedish welfare state needs to be re-evaluated, especially in light of rapid demographic change.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45001599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was carried out through an exploratory, transversal and non-experimental qualitative study, with non-statistical sampling, for continuous inclusion for convenience. The instrument used was an open questionnaire, based on Patton's in-depth interview structure. The main findings show the need to recognize and value the role of the long-distance caregiver in research and support approaches because of the potential impact of migration and caregivers on acculturation, stress experienced by the long-distance caregiver, the support they both may receive in the country of origin and in the country where they live, as well as the family's perception of them in terms of what caregiving means, all through critical analysis perspectives from gender, interculturality and intersectionality. Finally, the stories of the six participating women show important contributions in the care they provide to their sick family member, the primary caregiver and the rest of the family. Also, the experience of long-distance care was not determined by the length of the distance; the feelings and emotions that these women experience are the same, international migration or migration within the country were not determined.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45790714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sample consists of 15 shared care plans established for older people in Sweden. The analysis was performed using directed content analysis. The requirements in the Swedish law and the 15 indicators of shared decision making (SDM) in the Multifocal Approach to the Sharing in SDM inventory was used to define the main categories. The policy requirements were fulfilled to a varied extent. All the care plans were established in collaboration between the municipality and the county council, but social services were not represented in six of them. The older person and next of kin were present at 14 of the care planning meetings. The individual’s agreement to the establishment was documented in ten of the plans but how and what the person had agreed to was not specified further. The headings focused at the policy requirements and did not support a care planning process, or a documentation based on SDM. Six out of 15 indicators of SDM were reflected. The decision-making process needs to be acknowledged more in the process of establishing shared care plans for older people.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45173176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transitioning of young adult to older people may result as reduction of social, physiological and psychological capacities that bring social and health threats for the older population. The rich tradition of dignified ageing is exceedingly wearied away in developing countries, including Malaysia. The primary purpose of this research is to provide a snapshot of what it means to be living with chronic disease in Malaysia. This study was conducted in Klang Valley, Malaysia, due to the paucity of research in this area. The present study demonstrates the true stories of elderly associated with their physical, psychological and social experiences regarding immediate surroundings, friends, family and the society residing in Noble Care Malaysia, which is an established welfare and human services organisation, helping the deserving members of society. The qualitative research methodology is adopted, and an in-depth life history technique has been used for a deeper picture of the elderly’s memories and experience. The data is collected through five in-depth life history’s narrative of the elderly with chronic diseases. The study explains the true stories of the elderly in connection to familial neglection and abandonment for social awareness about ageing and older citizen feelings. Thus, it is imperative to keep the senior citizen self-esteem positive, along with the mental and physical activity. However, most importantly, the respect and mutual understanding between older citizen and the younger generation are getting worsen which need to be sustained harmoniously. This paper proposes some necessary measures to be addressed for graceful, proactive and gracious ageing.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43895784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This group is heterogenous in terms of characteristics of ways of spending leisure time, which, as an important aspect of everyday life affecting the quality of interpersonal relationships and well-being, might be related to the level of their depressive symptoms. The aim of this study was to find out whether participation in University of Third Age (UTA; leisure time spending directed at personal development) activities versus being a Nursing Home resident (NH; leisure time spending, directed at compensation of difficulties associated to the aging process) may differentiate elderly people in terms of the level of depression taking into account their optimism and acceptance of passing. The study was paper-pencil questionnaire-based, conducted on a sample of people above the age of 59: participants of UTA (N=48) and NH (N=54). In the UTA group, consistently for all levels of acceptance of passing, the higher the level of optimism, the lower the depressive symptoms. However, for the NH group, the higher the acceptance of passing, the lower the role of optimism in predicting depressive symptoms.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43889273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
