The research questions guiding this study are: how do older workers plan their retirement and how do they prepare themselves for it? Which facets of their current conditions of living and working and which biographical aspects have an impact on the way they learn and prepare for this new phase of life? How do retired adults sum up the transition and the significance of learning related to this process? To better understand the ways older workers prepare themselves for this next phase of life, on the one hand, and to contrast their expectations and plans with the actual experiences of those who already went through this transitional process, we collected data from 24 qualitative interviews and from a questionnaire answered by a representative quantitative sample of German adults aged 50 to 69. Some of the initial results derived from this data are presented here. We provide some empirical insight into the transition to retirement and, based on this, point to possible ways of supporting older workers faced with this transition through educational programs.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2017-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42509735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this case study we used non-structured interviews to an extensive set of social actors, but also biographical interviews. Our main aim was to understand the contradictions and challenges posed by the ageing processes, and the way those processes affect the daily lives of people of the community, looking closely to the older adults’ situation. In Portugal, the mainstream social policy is creating the conditions for an increasing institutionalisation of older citizens. Not denying the fact that in later life such social support is fundamental, we point out the disadvantages that such institutionalisation brings to older adults. We also try show the importance of community, especially for the elderly. We argue that today it is crucial to regain the community potential to improve the quality of life of older adults.","PeriodicalId":41447,"journal":{"name":"RASP-Research on Ageing and Social Policy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2017-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47630304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
