The author attempts to show that, on the contrary, a practical and hands-on approach and background of ET faculty is not only useful, but an indispensable part of a research team for solving sophisticated research problems. As evidence, a summary of two applied research projects conducted by the author, for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center, is presented. The nature and the scope of the investigated problems are described. A practical and simple approach in solving a highly sophisticated problem in the area of control systems has been demonstrated. Based on the author's experience, the benefits of faculty development through applied research, to both the faculty and the institution, are outlined.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":414138,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education Twenty-First Annual Conference. This procedure may subsequently be used to formulate a path analytic model in the effective domain for informational reference during current classroom instruction and future science curriculum development efforts. It is hoped that consideration of this attitudinal dimension will assist in reversing the current trend toward decreasing science course enrollments and concurrently enhance the scientific literacy of the general public.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":414138,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education Twenty-First Annual Conference. Some of the feeder colleges are TAC/ABET accredited and some are not. The NJIT Electrical Engineering Technology program, a TAC/ABET accredited program, has been in existence for more than 15 years and a large amount of data is available on the success rate of these students. By comparing the data of students from TAC/ABET accredited lower-division programs with data of students from lower-division programs not TAC/ABET accredited, some conclusions can be drawn on the effectiveness of the TAC/ABET accreditation. Even though the programs listed in the catalogs are virtually identical, students from TAC/ABET accredited colleges are more successful academically than those from colleges not ABET accredited.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":414138,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education Twenty-First Annual Conference. Some of the technical topics included were discussions of computers, remote communication, VCRs, microwave ovens, automatic control systems, household wiring distribution, as well as current items of interest such as the Hubble telescope imperfections. In addition, each student selected or was given a problem to conceptually use his/her new found tools to solve. Vehicle location using local radio stations as beacons, parking lot license plate readers, computers to determine parking bills, and home basement gas detectors were typical problems the students elected to conceptually solve. This course, with typical enrollments of over 100 students, has alerted the administration and many of the 25000 students/1200 faculty at NIU to the new Electrical Engineering program on campus. This has resulted in the program being more dynamically supported by the university community.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":414138,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education Twenty-First Annual Conference. The objective of the shared laboratory is to improve the effectiveness of the control and instrumentation laboratory experience for undergraduates. An experimental station can be operated from a computer in a classroom, or from a computer at a remote location or another campus. A multimedia configuration using a graphical user interface and remote logon capability is envisioned. The system will provide the tools to predict system performance with a simulation, show data as they are generated, analyze data after they are taken, and show a visual presentation of the experimental configuration with video disc. This facility will permit cooperative development of laboratory experiments and comparison of pedagogical approaches with others who use the experimental packages (software and hardware).<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":414138,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education Twenty-First Annual Conference. This increase in attrition is of particular concern considering the fact those students electing to study engineering are among the best and brightest high school graduates. A model curriculum for the year 2000 is proposed. It is suggested that the undergraduate engineering curriculum should be revised to reduce the shock of the transition from high school to college, give more attention to developing basic study and critical thinking skills with the freshmen, introduce first year students to concepts of design and develop teamwork among the students, utilize computer technology to improve and expand mathematics education, introduce engineering concepts in the physics courses to make them more relevant, strengthen the general liberal arts education, and provide students with opportunities to study aspects of engineering and project management.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":414138,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education Twenty-First Annual Conference.
