According to the characteristic of cylindrical array, it can be seen as a linear array whose elements are the identical circular arrays, which motivates us to apply such structures for sensor network deployment. In our sensor networks with circular-array deployment, the co-prime linear array and nested linear array could be combined with circular arrays. Moreover, in order to achieve better performance in direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation with as few elements as possible, the two-dimensional nested array is extended to the cylindrical array and through augmented matrix MUSIC approach, multiple sources in the range could be successfully detected based on such deployed sensor networks. Simulation results show that the new proposed sparse cylindrical arrays-based sensor networks can not only reduce the number of sensors, but also improve the resolution in comparison with an equal length uniform cylindrical array-based sensor networks.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126780591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the technology standardization activities such as the Bluetooth V4.x (Bluetooth smart) have led to an explosive growth in innovative short-range wireless devices capable of providing various services to AAL. Allowing machine-to-machine (M2M) communication between these devices also presents new commercial service opportunities. Communication service providers, including telecom carriers, may need to establish new networks to accommodate M2M interactions and reinvent their business strategies. Typically, simple M2M or IoT devices need another capable device such as a smartphone to act as a gateway to the Internet to operate at their full potential. This paper investigates a novel IoT architecture in which any Internet-enabled device in the vicinity can act as an M2M gateway for IoT devices. This eliminates the need for the IoT device user to also own a smartphone or an Internet-enabled device to obtain services such as online-to-offline. This paper describes a novel IoT architecture test bed suitable for short-range wireless devices. The test bed's implementation, advantages/disadvantages and sample analytics from the gathered data from a real-life event are described with encouraging results.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121379652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SocIoTal is a European FP7 project which aims to create a socially-aware citizen-centric Internet of Things infrastructure. The aim of the project is to put trust, user-control and transparency at the heart of the system in order to gain the confidence of everyday users and developers. By providing adequate tools and mechanisms that simplify complexity and lower the barriers of entry, it will encourage citizen participation in the Internet of Things. This adds a novel and rich dimension to the emerging IoT ecosystem, providing a wealth of opportunities for the creation of new services and applications. These services and applications will be able to address the needs of society therefore improving the quality of life in cities and communities. In addition to technological innovation, the SocIoTal project sought to innovate the way in which users and developers interact and shape the direction of the project. The project worked on new formats in obtaining data, information and knowledge. The first step consisted of gaining input, feedback and information on IoT as a reality in business. This led to a validated iterative methodology which formed part of the SocIoTal toolkit and a best practices guide for local policy makers and cities.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"447 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125773319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve meaningful energy savings, IoT solutions to monitor different features of a building need to be combined with novel mechanism to motivate users to adopt energy-efficient routines. For that reason, the present work introduces a novel solution that integrates an open IoT data management platform within the FIWARE initiative and a serious game. This game allows users to take part in a healthy competition of energy-related actions. In this paper, the design of this integration is put forward.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116310123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Usage awareness and efficient management of HVAC have the potential to significantly reduce related costs. Nevertheless, strict saving policies may contrast with users' comfort. This paper proposes a Smart HVAC system where a trade-off between energy costs and thermal comfort of users is achieved. This user-centric approach takes advantage of the Social Internet of Things (SIoT) paradigm to augment real world objects with a virtual counterpart that leverages social consciousness to interact with other objects. Accordingly, a building thermal profile is characterized to drive the selection of the most appropriate working times for the HVAC. Experimental results prove that the implemented system is able to adapt to user's needs and ensure an acceptable comfort level while at the same time reducing energy costs with reference to static or traditional scenarios.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132842463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is that updates can be used by attackers to inject malicious code. This work presents a lightweight protocol to update each device in a secure way. The cryptographic keys employed are fresh and are not stored but reconstructed by exploiting the Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) of the device hardware. The feasibility of the proposal is illustrated with experimental results of IoT devices that use the SRAM PUFs in their Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) system on chips.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127676464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In response to this, we propose the Semantics Extractor, a framework for automatic extraction of semantic graphs from REST interfaces exposed by IoT platforms. Through an iterative process of extracting, identifying, inferring, enriching and refining, our framework is able to discover IoT resources, add semantics to platforms' payloads and capture latent links within and between resources exposed by IoT platforms, from which further semantics can be deduced. We show via examples how RDF graphs are incrementally generated and enriched by such iteration process to interoperate IoT platforms. At last we present an implementation architecture.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123544985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IoT protocols offer horizontal scalability, interoperability and multi-service environment versus isolated, proprietary and service based environment of traditional smart metering network solutions. Smart metering is not limited to electricity meters; it comprises gas and/or water meters. In other words, it encompasses battery powered devices with limited computing functionalities and energy resources along with full functional devices powered by main line. The battery consumption of end-points is a major challenge and should be addressed in IoT smart-metering solutions. Among the various techniques to reduce the energy consumption, routing is a key element affecting the network performance and lifetime. IETF in its ROLL working group has considered RPL as the routing protocol for IoT applications in low power and lossy networks (LLN). SEEOF, based on RPL, is designed to use energy efficiently and extend network lifetime. It takes into account both the link quality and node energy. We have implemented SEEOF in ContikiOS and compared the energy consumption in RPL using SEEOF with existing objective function. Simulation results show that up to 27% improvement is attained in the network life time when using the proposed objective function. More importantly, the results show that SEEOF balances the energy consumption more uniformly among the battery powered devices keeping them alive for longer duration.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128531292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
