Indeed, the current IoT landscape consists of a large set of isolated islands that do not constitute a real Internet, preventing the exploitation of the huge potential expected by Information and communications technology (ICT) visionaries and unfolding business opportunities facilitated by digitalization and automation. The VICINITY project will build and demonstrate a platform linking various ecosystems providing “interoperability as a service” for infrastructures in the IoT. The approach is bottom-up, decentralized, user-centric and standards-based without relying on a single standard.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131267174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of the roadmap is to allow stakeholders and the big data community to identify and meet big data challenges, and to proceed with a shared understanding of the societal impact, positive and negative externalities, and concrete problems worth investigating. It builds upon a case study focused on the impact of big data practices in the context of Earth Observation that reveals both positive and negative effects in the areas of economy, society and ethics, legal frameworks and political issues. The roadmap identifies European technical and non-technical priorities in research and innovation to be addressed in the upcoming five years in order to deliver societal impact, develop skills and contribute to standardization.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123149168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A novel IoT-based healthcare platform, supporting decentralized and mobile monitoring of assisted livings in highly heterogeneous contexts, can be obtained by integrating two already existing heterogeneous, non-interoperable IoT platforms (BodyCloud and universAAL) according to the strategy proposed in the ongoing INTER-IoT (Horizon 2020) European project. A specific healthcare assisted living use case, named INTER-Health, is deployed to both validate the INTER-IoT interoperability strategy and provide value added assisted living mobile healthcare services in terms of faster detection and correction of wrong lifestyles or critical situations.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129714301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the Internet of Things (IoT) is being considered as one of the primary use cases for ICN it raises the question of the compatibility between IoT and ABE. An important part of the IoT is the resource constrained devices, for them there is a challenge to perform the computationally expensive operations required for ABE. In this paper we consider ABE in sensor networks and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of a system solution where the ABE operations are performed on the sensors. To properly discuss these concerns we have implemented two ABE schemes, a Single-authority ABE (SA-CP-ABE) scheme and a Multi-authority ABE (MA-CP-ABE) scheme. Results regarding the execution time, RAM usage, data overhead and battery consumption of these implementations on a sensor are presented. We conclude that it is possible, already today, to perform ABE on sensors for smaller policies. The main limitation in deploying ABE in sensors is the RAM size of the sensors.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127908624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we present a new IoT system designed for long-term tracking applications of personal vehicles and moving assets, such as bicycles and carts. The system integrates Cellular, GNSS and BLE communication technologies that enable the implementation of a wide set of geo-aware tracking and fitness monitoring applications. Power consumption minimization is one of the main goals and design challenges for the presented system. This paper focuses on methods and techniques for power consumption optimization at the hardware and software level. We present the design of a miniature kinetic energy harvesting solution and of system architectures for leakage currents minimization and ultra-low power consumption. Results obtained in both simulation and in-field experiments demonstrate high efficiency and performance of the proposed solution, resulting in energy neutral performance of continuous tracking task.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125571646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The emergence of edge/fog computing as a compute model has further highlighted the need of a uniform model to cater to the inherent heterogeneity of participating devices. In several domains, the devices may range from standard compute and communication devices to gateways/switches, as well as robots/drones and other types of autonomous entities. In scenarios like disaster management, warehouse automation, surveillance etc. use of robots/drones/AGVs/UAVs is steadily increasing in order to minimise potentially hazardous human intervention. Optimality of data exchange and further processing is a desired feature in such scenarios, especially in outdoor disaster situations where availability of the back-end cloud infrastructure can not be guaranteed. In this paper, we demonstrate a real life robotic data exchange model based on Resource Description Framework (RDF). We further perform a comparative analysis of network performance between TCP in Robot Operating System (ROS) and block-wise extension to Constrained Application Layer Protocol (CoAP) for bidirectional exchange of such RDF data in a disaster situation where robotic entities accomplish search and rescue missions in collaboration with fog devices. The causal analysis presented in this paper puts a stepping stone for potential future enhancement of CoAP.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131511632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To retain information despite frequent and unpredictable power failures, a transiently-powered system can use non-volatile memory to store checkpoints of program state. However current checkpointing techniques only consider the state of computation (processor, memory) and disregard peripheral state completely. This paper presents a software framework that allows for the use of non-trivial peripherals such as analog-to-digital converters, serial interfaces or radio devices, in transiently-powered systems.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129296689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In line with these trends and requirements, ID Oriented Networking, with the detailed background and implementation framework, is elaborated, which contributes to achieve unified IoT communications in future networks. Specifically, ION has the following key components: Network Mapping System, ID Management System, and ID Relationship Management System. Additionally, ION is able to naturally support universal mobility of IoT terminals and enhance intrinsic security of IoT networks, while also can facilitate internetworking of all virtual and physical things over distinct domains, for a fully connected world. At the end of this paper, the merits, challenges and future work of ION are briefly discussed as well.","PeriodicalId":413939,"journal":{"name":"2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"28 19","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113976603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
