Also described are OTs’ use of the results of cognitive assessments to substantiate recommendations such as family education, safety, discharge disposition, and return to driving. Method: An anonymous, 10-question survey was emailed to over 50 occupational therapists on a healthcare campus in three practice settings: acute hospital, neurological rehabilitation, and outpatient. Survey questions included the use of standardized and nonstandardized cognitive assessments and how results influence occupational therapist’s recommendations and clinical decision-making. Results: Over 80% of the reported tests administered over 6 months were nonstandardized or screening assessments versus 14% standardized assessments. Trends for the use of nonstandardized over standardized tests appeared to be related to time constraints and productivity demands, although comments stated that limited inferences could be made from nonstandardized assessments. Additionally, themes emerged regarding the influence that practice setting has on clinical decision-making and the overall use of cognitive assessments. Conclusion: Across practice settings, OT on this healthcare campus use cognitive assessments and results to provide various recommendations that are influenced by the setting. In all practice settings, therapists more often implement nonstandardized versus standardized assessments to access cognition. This study determined efficacy of Kinematic Therapy (KT) on depression, anxiety, functional independence (FI) and QoL of SSv. Methodology: Study involved 940 ambulant SSv recruited from eight health institutions in Lagos, Nigeria and were assessed for depression, anxiety, QoL and FI using Becks Depression Inventory, Becks Anxiety Inventory, Stroke-Specific-QoL questionnaire and FI Measure respectively. They were randomised into KT and Common Physiotherapy (CP) groups. The KT received 25minutes of kinematic therapy while the CP received usual physiotherapy, twice weekly for 6weeks. Results: Six hundred and seventy-four (343males) of the 940 SSv were diagnosed of depression and/or anxiety and participated in this study; 341(50.59%) were in KT while 333 were in SP. More (81.23%) of KT had mild mood disturbance before intervention while 92.36% of them had normal mood after. More (83.18%) of SP had borderline mood disorder before intervention while 84.69% had normal mood after. There was significant (p<0.05) improvement in depression, anxiety, QoL and FI except in language, personality, family role, self care, social role, thinking and upper-limb function in SP. The KT had significantly better improvement all the outcomes than SP. There was negative significant relationship (p<0.05) between depression and anxiety, and FI and QoL. There was positive significant relationship (p<0.05) between FI and QoL except in vision domain. Conclusion: Mood disorders is common in stroke survivors. Kinematic Therapy is more effective in managing depression and anxiety symptoms and improving functional independent recovery and quality of life than conventional physiotherapy in stroke survivors.

Failure of the lymphatic system causes lymphedema [1]. Lymphedema may reduce the quality of life and may progress as well as cause other complications such as cellulitis if untreated [1]. Although there is no cure for lymphedema, there are interventions to reduce or manage the swelling and the discomfort [1]. The purpose of this study is to show that a patient with lymphedema can improve their quality of life significantly with adequate lymphedema therapy interventions using Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). Method and Procedures: A 47-year-old African American female patient presented to outpatient physical therapy with a report of experiencing bilateral lower extremity swelling for about ten years. To determine the effects of the treatments, the lymphedema therapist examined the patient using the following tests and measures and outcome measurement tools: Bilateral Girth Measurements, the Lymphedema Life Impact Scale Version 2 (v2), and the Global Rating of Change (GRoC) Scale. The patient attended physical therapy sessions 2 times per week for 3 weeks not including the date of initial evaluation. Thus, the patient attended five treatment sessions. The patient actively participated in the creation of the current goal: to decrease bilateral lower extremity swelling. Results: On discharge assessment (6th visit), the patient reported a reduction in pain to (3/10). The patient scored a 12/68 on the Lymphedema Life Impact Scale (v2) indicating that her quality of life had improved significantly within the past three weeks since receiving lymphedema therapy services. The patient made excellent progress, demonstrated marked improvements with involved extremities lymphatic circulation, and decreased swelling with girth measurements. The patient reported significant improvements with functional activities of daily living such as standing, sitting to standing, and walking. The patient also reported that her quality of life improved significantly.

Approximately 25% of the older adults in the U.S. experience a fall each year, which leads to excessive healthcare costs. Falls lead to serious injuries such as broken bones and head injuries hospitalizing 800,000 patients a year [1]. Based on those statistics, identifying fall risk accurately and efficiently using balance assessments is pertinent to fall prevention in the geriatric population. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the validity of the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and Activities-Specific Balance Confidence Questionnaire (ABC) to the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) in assessing the risk of falls in the elderly population.\u0000\u0000Methods: The systematic review was conducted to highlight balance assessments including the Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, and Activities-specific Balance Confidence Questionnaire. Databases used in the electronic search were PubMed, Google Scholar, MedlinePlus, PTNow, PEDro, and EBSCOhost, and parameters were set at studies published from 2010 to 2021. All relevant studies were reviewed by assessing abstracts for inclusion. Studies in which participants completed and were scored on the three balance assessments were included. All participants completing the tests were required to be 65 years of age or older in order for the respective study to be included.\u0000\u0000Results: 62 studies were identified for further review after the initial search. After a more extensive screening process, several studies were excluded for reasons such as study design, age of participants, or insufficient testing measures. 16 studies were included for data analysis with a total of 1,376 participants. The validity of the BBS, TUG, and ABC were measured in the 16 studies with strong negative correlation between BBS and TUG (rho (22) = -.756, p < .01), and moderate positive correlation between BBS and ABC (rho (22) = .591, p < .01).\u0000\u0000Conclusions: The Timed Up and Go test may be an effective and valid tool assessing balance and a participant’s fall risk. It has been shown to have a strong correlation with the Berg Balance Scale. Meanwhile, the Activities-specific Balance Confidence Questionnaire, a subjective measure, has a moderate correlation with the Berg Balance Scale indicating that it is capable of identifying fall risk but not as accurately or efficiently as the Timed Up and Go Test. This research advocates for the appropriateness of the TUG test and ABC questionnaire, and therefore widens clinicians’ choices of valid balance assessment tools during fall risk examinations.

This study sought to investigate the role of cognition in steering using a dual task paradigm in healthy young and healthy older adults. Twenty-five healthy young adults and nineteen healthy older adults completed a 900 walking turn at a comfortable pace under single and dual task conditions. Dependent variables included the time taken to turn and the turn onset of the head, trunk, and pelvis segments. Results indicate dual tasking increases the time taken to turn but does not alter the sequence of initiation of segment reorientation into the turn. The effects of aging on these behaviors were minimal. Most notable was that the older adults did not slow their turns as much as the young adults did during dual tasking. These results suggest that initiation of segment reorientation is independent of cognitive influence but that increased cognitive load is considered when planning movement time.
