The contribution that this article offers arises from the often repeated observation that what is called mysticism today was called contemplation in the Middle Ages. To that end, this article seeks a clearer view of three things: 1) what Luther meant by contemplation, 2) whether his usage was continuous or discontinuous with medieval usage of the same term, and 3) the extent to which Luther's use of the term maps onto current scholarly discussions about ‘mysticism.’ Special attention is given to the first two, thereby laying the groundwork for further reflections by other scholars on the third.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"31 1","pages":"3 - 20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74725378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its intellectual-historical genealogy and historical-theological background, however, deserve much more scholarly attention than they have received hitherto. This paper illuminates the intellectual sources of Herborn encyclopaedism in terms of some key cognitive metaphors from the field of Christian theology. I not only show some traces of Bonaventuran and Cusan philosophical theology in Herborn encyclopedism, but I also argue that this encyclopaedism must be contextualised according to theological loci, i.e. generation, incarnation of the Word, and deification (generatio, incarnatio Verbi, theosis).","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"28 1","pages":"188 - 207"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89688980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impression given by this lacuna is that Calvin had little to say about the descensus. However, the reformer devoted more energy explaining the descensus than any other clause of the Apostles’ Creed, an explanation already developed in his first treatise the Psychopannychia. This article shows how the French humanist scholar Jacques Lefèvre d’Étaples’ reliance on Nicholas of Cusa demonstrates an organic stream of teaching in the late medieval period within which Calvin’s theology of Christ's descent into hell is clearly situated. Calvin, Lefèvre, and Cusa all understood the descent into hell as Christ’s experience of the second death, or the death of the soul. Calvin’s descensus theology was far from novel and exceeds a mere metaphorical reference to the crucifixion despite suggestions to the contrary in popular scholarship.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"1 1","pages":"140 - 160"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76254195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Voetius draws appreciatively but critically on Aquinas and Denys in his exploration of meditation or contemplation. Voetius is also influenced by Cusa’s doctrine of learned ignorance. Voetius goes beyond Aquinas, for whom contemplation is essentially and primarily an act of the intellect, and even beyond Denys, for whom affection is virtually included in contemplation, and draws heavily on Cusa's theory of learned ignorance, which provides a certain unity of contemplation and affection, as well as a tight integration of faith and reason. This article builds on a recent groundswell of interest in the modern reception of Cusa, correcting and extending previous scholarship. It also addresses an important lacuna in the scholarship on Protestant mysticism.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"12 1","pages":"161 - 187"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82246622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will attempt to explore for the first time the varied use of Bonaventure in the large body of sermons by Cusanus. It will seek to demonstrate the multivalent influence of the Seraphic Doctor, in his various genres, on the way Cusanus over his long and varied career sought to present Christian doctrine and inculcate Christian praxis. Specifically, an examination of the sermons of Cusanus demonstrates that throughout his whole career, he utilized at great length a variety of texts by the Seraphic Doctor to explain fundamental concepts of sacramental and moral theology, as well as ecclesiology, eschatology, and the nature of biblical exegesis.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"1309 1","pages":"128 - 139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86487174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Building on scholarly work on representations of Luther within Lutheran Culture, early modern reading and printed marginalia, it explores reference notes as a medium for representing and commemorating Luther in print. It is argued that reference notes were a useful tool for translators and publishers to highlight Luther’s authority while simultaneously giving the texts credibility. Reference notes materialised in print the Lutheran wish to create a bond between Luther and the late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century reader, as they signalled and verified the spiritual presence of Luther in the printed text and hence enabled the reader to imagine an encounter with the authentic Luther through his texts.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"2 1","pages":"82 - 100"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78356226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These books, published by both men and women, across confessional boundaries, led readers through highly methodical meditations to prepare them to worthily receive the Sacrament of Communion. Eucharistic handbooks and Ars Moriendi literature were both widely and enthusiastically received in the seventeenth century and they were closely connected. Divines who published Ars Moriendi tracts also penned a preparatory manual, and this essay will show how in the seventeenth century these genres, and the devotional practices they prescribed, began to blend into one another. Sacramental preparation became a conscious preparation for death and the newer, seventeenth-century art of worthy receiving was absorbed into the already well-established art of dying.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"72 1","pages":"101 - 122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76304667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The picture it presents is a detailed, structured narrative of developments over centuries, using a wide range of sources. The result is successful, shedding new light both on the medieval church and its Reformation successor. The results come as something of a surprise, with much greater continuity between the two periods than might have been expected. The range of materials and sources used in the volume is impressive – church buildings, wills, medieval devotional materials, Reformation Prayer Books, ecclesiastical Injunctions, legal art, sculpture, and manuscript decoration. The resulting synthesis presents a powerful picture of continuity and change in the English church.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"22 1","pages":"123 - 124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81919182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article is chiefly exploratory, setting out this programme’s sources, practices, and aims within the circle of Jacques Lefèvre d’Étaples, comparing to the influential projects of the Modern Devotion, Marsilio Ficino, and Pico della Mirandola. The article centres on some examples of how this hermeneutic practice looked in action, before closing with the idea that conceptual ambition made it vulnerable to the mounting pressures of the early French reformation.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"18 1","pages":"44 - 72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84647851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In doing so, this might actually help to position Tuckney more precisely within the tradition of Reformed Trinitarianism. However, none of this detracts from Cho’s strong chapter on Tuckney’s Trinitarian understanding of salvation. Cho’s commendable work paves the way for future research. He suggests that more work is required on Tuckney’s ‘understanding of the relationship between covenant of works and covenant of grace and the law-gospel hermeneutics. The role and place of moral law in the life of a believer is also worthy of further research’ (153–4). We are also told that a translation of Tuckney’s Praelectiones Theologicae (1679) is on the horizon (7). This ought to generate more interest in Tuckney and alert us to the fact that the study of the original works of Westminster divines is still much needed.","PeriodicalId":41309,"journal":{"name":"REFORMATION & RENAISSANCE REVIEW","volume":"232 1","pages":"76 - 77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85324756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
