The combustion kinetics is described using finite-rate chemistry with a skeletal chemical mechanism. A two-equation soot model is incorporated to capture soot dynamics. The coupled solver is developed within the OpenFOAM-5.x platform, and is employed to simulate a small n-heptane pool fire with 29% of radiant fraction. Comparison of the numerical simulations with experimental measurements is then presented, including the distribution of heat flux along the boundary and the overall radiant fraction. The strength of radiation source terms is compared to that of the chemical source terms along the central plane, and discussions on the effects of turbulence-radiation interactions are provided.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130509937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present results obtained with a combined experimental-numerical method considering and quantifying temperature-dependent effective thermal properties of mullite ceramics in a temperature range of 288 K to 1473 K. These foams are placed in EPFL’s HFSS at a peak radiative heat flux of 1 MW/m2. A 3D numerical finite volume model based on an OpenFOAM toolbox was used to determine the effective thermal conductivity of samples with three different porosities. The model was then coupled to a 3D ray-tracing Monte-Carlo in-house code to separately model the radiative heat transfer through the studied samples. We quantify the effects of coupled conduction and radiation on the temperature fields inside the highly porous media.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"715 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133050877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Radiative transfer equation is added to the existing Navier-Stokes based solver. The solver is developed within OpenFOAM framework and accommodates features to model thermodynamic properties of high-temperature gases and non-equilibrium boundary conditions. The radiative transport equation is solved using spherical harmonics (P1) and finite volume discrete ordinate method (fvDOM) approximations. The aerothermodynamics of high-temperature non-equilibrium flowfield over blunt-nosed models have been analyzed using our solver and results are validated with DSMC data. Good agreement has been observed with DSMC data and significant improvement is seen when compared to the conventional high-speed compressible flow solver. The results have shown that a considerable amount of heat escapes from the shock-layer region, hence resulting in radiative cooling. It is observed that, if no radiative heat transfer is considered in the solver, it overpredicts the temperature and shock-layer thickness. Therefore incorporation of radiation along with all the non-equilibrium effects in the rarefied hypersonic regime is imperative.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129219904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(2014) is introduced to gas-particle mixtures with coal/char and ash particles in the context of the Weighted-Sum-of-Gray-Gases (WSGG) model for modelling their radiative properties. Each radiating species is considered independent in this approach. The accuracy is assessed in a 2D square geometry representing the post-burner region of a coal-fired furnace with wet oxy-fuel conditions. The proposed non-gray gas-particle WSGG model predicts the radiative source terms and net wall heat fluxes with the mean relative errors less than 14 %. The use of Planck-mean values for particle absorption leads to higher errors. However, applying the non-gray WSGG gas parameter set of Bordbar et al. (2014) in conjunction with the proposed non-gray WSGG particle model significantly reduces the maximum errors, with the mean relative errors lower than 7 %, and the associated computational effort.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116876248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These properties strongly depend on the material shape which provides obtaining unique scattering characteristics when rigorously designed. However, the conventional design methods require precise modeling and characterization of the shapes of the scattering objects, thus requiring a lot of intuition and knowledge about light radiation at small scales. We propose a framework to discover new nanoparticle designs for improved scattering based on topology optimization. The framework allows us to maximize scattering cross section of the particle domain. Increased scattering cross section at nano-scale leads to improved light trapping which is critical in many applications such as more efficient thin film solar cells. Topology optimization suggests a knowledge independent design procedure therefore revealing relationships between certain regions in the design domain and the light behavior for maximum scattering cross section.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"45 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124387478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To accurately quantify the forcing and interpret optical measurements of uncoated and coated black carbon (BC) particles, it is indispensable to know the refractive index m = n + ki of BC in the visible and near infrared. In this study the effects of various morphological parameters and structure defects of black carbon particles on their mass absorption cross section (MAC) were first investigated using the generalized Mie-solution method (GMM) and discrete dipole approximation (DDA). The accuracy of the Rayleigh-Debye-Gans (RDG) approximation is also evaluated. Based on recent measurements of the soot absorption function E(m) and freshly emitted BC MAC in the visible and near-infrared, the most probable range of E(m) was recommended. A criterion was proposed to determine the valid range of refractive index of freshly emitted BC based on the contour plot of E(m) on the n-k plane.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127724070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, a 3D stochastic ray tracing code was developed to treat realistic geometries. Model parameters based on the same LBL dataset were constructed for all approximate methods. Comparisons consist of two steps: 1/ a set of rays randomly spread over the unit sphere is chosen and narrow band models are assessed against LBL calculations. The most accurate narrow band method is chosen as the reference, 2/ all models are then compared with the chosen reference. For the cases considered in this paper, it was found that: 1/ the l-distribution approach is more accurate than Ck methods and can be used as the reference; 2/ the RC-SLW model provides very accurate predictions; 3/ the WSGG technique, which is the fastest method considered in this work, provides acceptable estimations, even in highly non-isothermal situations.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"552 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133246067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model includes the geometrical optics approximation for ice grains of snow, the two-flux model for radiative transfer, and solution to transient energy equation including possible snow melting. Time variation of irradiation conditions from the Sun and clear sky during several days is taken into account. The effects of both the convective heat transfer and mid-infrared radiative cooling at the snowpack surface are considered. It is shown that thermal processes are not located near the snow surface only. The calculations show an accumulation of heat and possible snow melting in rather deep layers of a snowpack.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125995536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study the transient heating process inside the heating section of continuous glass annealing furnace is simulated using a segregated approach. Convective heat transfer inside the furnace is modeled using a steady-state solver in the Eulerian frame of reference and the transient conduction problem inside the moving glasses is using a separate transient solver in Lagrangian frame of reference. Radiation heat transfer between the glasses and the furnace is modeled using a graphics processor accelerated Monte Carlo ray tracing based surface-to-surface radiation model. The glass and furnace surfaces are taken as black in the considered scenario. The segregated approach is evaluated to be suitable as a modeling approach in terms of the convergence rate. Due to the fast convergence rate of the method and acceleration of the MCRT solver, the present heating process can be simulated in around 2 hours of computational time. Finally, the observed non-uniformity in the glass temperature distributions at the furnace outlet are quantified and the possible causes of this non-uniformity are discussed.","PeriodicalId":413005,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Radiative Transfer, RAD-19","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129063657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
