It addresses her life and work as a filmmaker. Along with Sani Magori and Aicha Macky, she came to cinema in the dry years of the 2000s yet managed to position herself\u0000 at the forefront of film production in Niger. For Weira, the documentary form, a much-maligned genre due to its association with mass political manipulation in the 1960s and 1970s, is the tool of choice for artistic creation. The introduction focuses on the images she crafts in La Colère\u0000 dans le vent expounding a beauty only rivalled by the excruciating pains of men suffering untold diseases, due to their exposure to uranium pollution. The interview explores the making of Anger in the Wind (2016) and reveals an artist with a keen sense of justice, a woman given\u0000 to moments of nostalgia yet revolted by the unending traumas suffered by the inhabitants of her native town: Arlit.

This article focuses on the ecocritical edge neatly blended into the narrative structures and visual aesthetics of the classic Touki Bouki and Hyenas.\u0000 The point is, through a minute analysis of the tropes and metaphors of lack, scarcity and abundance, to cast a sharp light on the deep-ecological angst informing Mambety’s cinematic gaze.

It argues that Weira’s documentary tells the story of slowly dying men through an exploration of a failed Anthropocene mediated by subjectivity and memory. Behind an almost casual handling of the camera,\u0000 Weira casts a keen sympathetic eye on the ‘environmentally embattled’ populations of her native town, Arlit. Anger in the Wind is a documentary of painful, angry, recriminatory words; it tactfully yet pointedly exposes the devastation of the local ecosystems by staging the\u0000 life stories of men and women who now realize that they were seen as disposable entities, not worthy of a dignified life cycle, fit for sacrifice at the altar of western technological prowess and comfort. As much as a testimony, Anger in the Wind is a Bamako style indictment\u0000 of a destructive way of inhabiting the earth and a Hyenas’ style call to collective resistance.

Using\u0000 concepts from ecocriticism to analyse the narrative structures of the film, the article explains how the Njombé Penja banana plantation (PHP), construed as a replica of the colonial model of production and spatial organization, leaves the local populations with a strong feeling of dispossession\u0000 and alienation. It concludes that geographical and ecological forms of imperialism contributed, alongside sociopolitical issues, to the failure of the post-independence African utopia.

Through an analysis of two Francophone texts, Grace Ly’s Jeune fille modèle and Kim Thúy’s Ru, this study demonstrates that it is silence which evokes and solidifies the trauma experienced by victims of war; this is transmitted to their children despite attempts at secrecy and endeavours to protect children from such trauma. It examines the ways in which narrating trauma and breaking silences play a role in recuperating both history and personal history. In foregrounding the voices of those who have died and haunt subsequent generations, the article discusses the silences that pervade Ru and Jeune fille modèle in order to gauge the extent to which narrating stories, finding one’s voice and breaking silences become a means of obtaining freedom and alleviating some of the dolour of war and losses. In so doing, it analyses the ways in which children enable these healing processes to take place and eventually permit multiple voices to break through the narrative fibre in order to create redemption stories.

The decision to return African artefacts to their country of origin is studied from a national perspective, shedding light on the postcolonial evolution of the French society, and from an international perspective, placing this decision within the structure of international relations. This article demonstrates that the restitution of African colonial artefacts is part of a political strategy aimed at addressing the national and international criticisms directed towards the French government without having to implement the structural reforms necessary to truly resolve them.

The migrant subject enters into the paradoxical interiorization of identity: on the one hand, he has left what he was, and on the other, he must update what is shaping him in the present. Literary writing thus becomes a specific space for the expression and articulation of these existential states by bringing us to reflection on the experience of this existence ‘outside the world’ of writers. Pham Van Ky and Linda Lê are among the authors who allow us to question their condition of exile as a possibility of existence.

Cette aveuglante absence de lumière received much critical acclaim internationally, but attracted as much controversy in Morocco. I describe the conditions of ‘les années de plomb’, then I examine the debates surrounding Cette aveuglante absence de lumière before analysing his testimonial La Punition, written over five decades after his release. How does La Punition differ from Cette aveuglante absence de lumière in style and approach? What does Ben Jelloun write about candidly, so many years after the fact, and what does he elide? After addressing these questions, I demonstrate there is no serious reckoning with the structural systems that constrain Moroccan society, namely the monarchy and the army. While Ben Jelloun describes his imprisonment in detail, there is no unequivocal critique of royal power; while he criticizes the abuse of power by the army in the 1960s, he never overtly denounces the continued muzzling of detractors in contemporary Morocco.

Dilem’s career – spanning over 30 years – has made him a staple of Algerian and European news, whether in newspapers or on TV. Both popular and prolific, Dilem produces cartoons that illustrate what I call ‘comic memory’, a recording and remembering of the past through humour. A diachronic analysis of this large corpus of drawings sheds light on the social and subversive potentials of humour, but most importantly allows for a discussion of its mechanisms over time. Through a careful reading of Dilem’s sardonic cartoons and their contexts of production, I show his work offers both a comic outlet unifying readers in a community of laughter, and a stern cultural commentary on how Algerians consider their history. In particular this article addresses two central motifs of Dilem’s work, on the one hand Algerians’ relationship to France, on the other hand the political pressures exerted on journalistic work in Algeria. Through themes such as censorship, racism and subversion, I explain how humour is a valuable source for memory studies. In fact, Dilem’s work participates in creating a comic archive that keeps track of the mentalités and sheds light on media politics, aesthetics and the poetics of humour.
