The research study was carried out using a case study design, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The perspectives of 24 academicians working at a state university were explored, and the data collected through an online platform using a structured interview form were analyzed by utilizing the content analysis method. The findings were reported in the form of themes, sub-themes, and codes, supported by participant expressions. Results indicated that academicians faced infrastructure-related problems during the pandemic process, which arose from various aspects. They expressed that distance education applications would be appropriate to use, especially in social sciences, theoretical courses, and crowded classrooms in the post-pandemic period. However, using distance education in math, sciences, and engineering may be inconvenient and create an inequality of opportunity. Academicians also stated that they experienced technical issues during the distance education process, open-to-abuse exams, low participation in classes, and problems in accessing education for students. They emphasized that encountering cases of cheating and plagiarism regarding the measurement and evaluation processes is an important deficiency. Furthermore, academicians made suggestions regarding distance education applications such as maintaining the hybrid teaching model, examining the practices of leading universities, introducing a new model, integrating virtual classroom applications into the process, or introducing existing interactive systems into the system.","PeriodicalId":41153,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Qualitative Research in Education-Egitimde Nitel Arastirmalar Dergisi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85854482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prospective teachers were asked to complete the parts of a proof left incomplete using those key ideas. It was decided together with three academics who are experts in the field of algebra which theorems to use and which proof sections to leave missing in the proof completion form. The proof completion form consisted of 5 proofs and was applied to 5 participants. The participants' processes of completing the proofs were evaluated in semi-structured interviews supported by the think-aloud method. Interviews were recorded by video and transcribed, and descriptive analysis was performed. The findings obtained were analyzed with think-aloud protocols. According to the results, key ideas can be said to play an active role in the proof process and the teaching of proof. In addition, developing activities consisting of proofs supported by key ideas can contribute to prospective teachers’ abilities to prove without memorization and internalize proof processes.","PeriodicalId":41153,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Qualitative Research in Education-Egitimde Nitel Arastirmalar Dergisi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84470592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of the 38 tertiary-level participants, 19 had finished the program before COVID-19, while the other 19 completed it online during quarantine. A structured interview form was used for collecting the participants’ opinions online, and content analysis was utilized for data analysis. The analysis resulted in three main themes were expectations, learning processes and outcomes. The first theme, expectations, yielded two shared categories for both groups: four language skills and academic/departmental expectations. Also, one separate category appeared for the face-to-face group: daily use of language. The second theme, the learning process, produced a shared category that was related to educational opportunities. The different categories were classroom atmosphere for the online group and physical opportunities/facilities for the face-to-face group. The last theme, which was about the outcomes of the program, provided two shared categories: faculty use and faculty-level challenges. The findings showed that participants’ opinions about online and face-to-face language programs were mostly similar. More comparative studies should be conducted to further explore the differences between online and face-to-face education in the long term.","PeriodicalId":41153,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Qualitative Research in Education-Egitimde Nitel Arastirmalar Dergisi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73853490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was planned as a holistic single case study using qualitative research methods. The study group consists of 12 participants, and among the purposive sampling methods, criterion sampling and maximum variation sampling methods were used. The interview form used in the study was designed by the researchers as a result of the literature review. The data were analyzed through content analysis. The codes and categories obtained from the interviews on union activities were grouped under four themes; the reasons for being or not being a member of a union, views on unions, positive benefits and negative practices of union activities, and suggestions on union activities. According to the collected data, recommendations have been made, including that unions should unite under a single roof and make a division within themselves at the branch level; they should exert pressure on the formation of a just, merit-based system for appointment and relocation.","PeriodicalId":41153,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Qualitative Research in Education-Egitimde Nitel Arastirmalar Dergisi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86309803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The participant in the study was a father with an adult child who has congenital, very advanced sensory-neural hearing loss. The study was designed by utilizing the life-history method, one of the qualitative research methods. Research data were collected through semi-structured interviews, documents, photographs and reflective researcher diaries. The collected data were analyzed with the inductive method. The findings were interpreted within the framework of nine main themes: the family in which the father was raised, the pregnancy period of his wife, the diagnosis period, the pre-school period, the primary school period, the secondary and high school period, the adulthood period, the e-Kpss/business life and the difficulties encountered after the cochlear implant surgery. Findings of the research indicated that the family in which the participant father was raised had an effect on his own perceptions of paternity. The father accepted his daughter's hearing loss more quickly, this behavior of the father increased his bond with the child with hearing loss and caused the father to have the main say over the child's developmental stages and academic skills. He stated that his wish as a father is to have more verbal communication with children with hearing loss. Although the findings of the study cannot be generalized to the entire population of fathers and children with hearing loss, it is thought that these findings will shed light on theories and further research.","PeriodicalId":41153,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Qualitative Research in Education-Egitimde Nitel Arastirmalar Dergisi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75544296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study, the forms of inequality created by the symbolic violence elements in the regulations, strategic plans and development plans are discussed in terms of students, based on the symbolic violence and cultural capital approaches developed by Bourdieu. In the research, case study design was used in compliance with the qualitative methodology. The data were analyzed by using the MAXQDA software in the context of content analysis. The research has shown that the principal, vice principals, and teachers are the representatives of the pedagogical authority and carry out their responsibilities in accordance with the pedagogical action. In addition, it has been found that the articles in the regulation divide students into two categories as acceptable and unacceptable students. It has been concluded that the condition of being an acceptable student depends on the elements of cultural capital acquired from the family, as well as having behavioral patterns related to universal and national values. At the conclusion of the study, it is recommended that the regulations should be reviewed by taking social class differences into consideration.","PeriodicalId":41153,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Qualitative Research in Education-Egitimde Nitel Arastirmalar Dergisi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89789165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
