The depositing film is smooth and its thickness can be well controlled at 50 µm. The film thickness is mainly determined by the pulling-speed of glass substrates. The grain size of the film varies from 30–100 µm. Sinton PCD measurement indicates the effective lifetime τ above 1.1 µs after SiNx coating on the front surface and forming gas annealing. The actual lifetime can be even higher because of lack of passivation on the rear surface.","PeriodicalId":411472,"journal":{"name":"2009 34th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (PVSC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131959241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One possibility is to use polycrystalline-silicon thin films, but the difficulty of this approach is to obtain a sufficiently high material quality and to achieve an effective passivation of the numerous grain boundaries. However, the utilization of a monocrystalline-silicon thin film instead of a polycrystalline-silicon layer should enable simpler device processes, higher process yield and a single-crystal-like efficiency due to the intrinsic higher quality of the material. In this paper, 10-micron thick monocrystalline-silicon layers on transparent glass-ceramic substrates were made by epitaxial thickening of thin monocrystalline-silicon seed layers. By using a very simple cell structure that does not incorporate any light trapping features, silicon single-crystal solar cells on glass-ceramics presented efficiencies of up to 7.5%. However, efficiencies above 9% should be realizable by simply improving the contacting scheme. In addition, by integrating an efficient light trapping scheme and by optimizing the minority carrier diffusion length, the efficiency potential could be as high as 15% for films with a thickness between five to ten microns on glass-ceramics.","PeriodicalId":411472,"journal":{"name":"2009 34th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (PVSC)","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131962867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

About a half of this PV installation is assumed to be brought still from massive residential roof-top applications. In such a state, PV penetration will reach almost 100 % in the majority of urban residential areas. Since the classical grid formation approach does not seems to be a good solution to deal with this issue, the author has already proposed “Autonomy-Enhanced PV Clusters (AE-PVC)” to realize a less dependent PV aggregation on the existing power grids in conjunction with grid power electronics and storage battery stations. Main contents are: (i) Case studies for residential towns and cities, (ii) Town grids mainly composed of massive residential PVs by considering fluctuating supply and demand; bidirectional power flows; daily cycle and irregular components; autonomous and decentralized control of town grid; necessity of battery stations or controllable power sources; autonomously controlled own frequency and voltage, (iii) Inter-grid coordination by autonomous and decentralized principle: interconnection through national grids with power producers; inter-town interconnections; asynchronous power routers and so on.","PeriodicalId":411472,"journal":{"name":"2009 34th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (PVSC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132602205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of Mg content and layer thickness of the Zn1−xMgxO on device formation was investigated. We found that the amount of Mg in the Zn1−xMgxO layer and the layer thickness significantly alter the cell properties. Device characterization indicated that the impact of the Mg content is not limited to the front-window layer, but also extends to underneath the CIGS layer. The numerical simulation nicely explains the relationship between various front-window layers and device performance. Our observation indicates that properties of the front-window layer may be important to junction formation in CIGS devices. Any changes to this part of the device could seriously alter device performance.","PeriodicalId":411472,"journal":{"name":"2009 34th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (PVSC)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130792744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These metallated oligimers provide for high absorption at longer wavelengths of solar energy and with very long lifetimes of created electrons for high collection efficiency, leading to a potential efficiency enhancement over conventional organic solar cells. However, many fundamental issues dealing with processability and optimum device topology need to be addressed for this new chemistry system to move from the Chemistry lab to a viable device platform. The PR feature attributed to bulk GaAs at 1.42 eV is analyzed to extract an electric field strength in the solar cell depletion region of 43 ± 1 kV/cm2. Temperature coefficients are measured for open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current under AM1.5D illumination from devices with zero, five, and 20 layers of QDs, and improved temperature stability is observed in the QD-enhanced devices.
