Currently, services are designed and managed by different teams with expertise over a wide range of concerns, from high-level business to low-level network aspects. Not only is this approach expensive in terms of time and resources, but it also has problems to scale up to new outsourcing and/or multi-vendor models, where subsystems and teams belong to different organizations. We endorse the idea, upheld among others in the autonomic computing community, that the network and system components involved in the provision of a service must be crafted to facilitate their management. Furthermore, they should help bridge the gap between network and business concerns. In this paper, we sketch an approach based on early work on the hierarchical organization of autonomic entities that possibly belong to different organizations. An autonomic entity governs over other autonomic entities by defining their goals. Thus, it is up to each autonomic entity to decide its line of actions in order to fulfill its goals, and the governing entity needs not know about the internals of its subordinates. We illustrate the approach with a simple but still rich example of a telecom service.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"129 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133021326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The synthesizer concept is based on a fractional-n PLL and was partly realized in an integrated circuit within the RESOLUTION EC-funded project. The basics of FMCW-TDOA radiolocation are described and the most important principles and parameters are described. Furthermore, the advantages of an active radiolocation system in combination with wireless data connectivity are outlined. The proposed system hence consists of the RESOLUTION chip in combination with a ZigBee meshed wireless network interface.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126067161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

W-band is a large and almost interference-free spectrum portion. For this reason, it is theoretically possible to forecast aerospace connections able at approaching the \"dream value\" of Gb/s data rate. This work aims at proposing a novel PHY-layer design for broadband satellite connections based on the Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions (PSWF). PSWF waveforms (originally developed for terrestrial UWB) are characterized by a near-optimal tradeoff between spectral compactness and envelope compactness. The resulting QAM-modulated signal can be amplified in saturation without any appreciable effect of nonlinear distortion, while maintaining a spectral efficiency rather similar to bandwidth- limited raised cosine waveforms. Experimental results, achieved by means of realistic simulation trials, fully demonstrate the potential advantages taken by the employment of PSWF in terms of reduced bit-error rate and increased link availability.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125487323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CogMesh is not a concept that simply applies cognitive functionalities into traditional wireless mesh networks. Instead, it aims to enable a uniform service platform by seamlessly integrating heterogenous wireless networks through the utilization of advanced cognitive and adaptive technologies under a mesh structure. The context based reasoning, policy and role based control model, and distributed trust and security mechanism are applied in CogMesh to establish a flexible, reliable, scalable and adaptive wireless network in complex wireless environments. It serves as a model to inspire the design of future wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"237 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122535426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, an adaptive subframe partitioning (ASP) algorithm that considers user's queue length and achievable data rate is used by base station to assign resources to relay stations. Regarding the slot allocation, we suggest two ways to extend conventional single-hop scheduling algorithms into multihop scenarios: link-based and end-to-end approaches. Simulation results indicate that the ASP algorithm reduces the amount of data buffered in relay stations, and hence increases system utilization and reduces the data loss caused by buffer overflow and handovers. Comparison of link-based and end-to-end approaches on max carrier-to-interference ratio (Max C/I) and proportional fairness (PF) scheduling algorithms shows that algorithms using the end-to-end approach can obtain higher throughput than those using the link-based approach, but at the expense of extra overhead for information exchange between the base station and relay stations. By using the ASP with the end-to-end PF scheduling, our frame-based resource allocation scheme achieves a tradeoff between system throughput maximization and fairness.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114290354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

International standard IEEE 802.11p defines low layers protocols for vehicular networks aimed to support Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications. Periodic broadcasting of short status messages (beacons) is foreseen as one of the key modes, which should be efficiently handled to provide active safety in vehicular networks. This paper presents a simple analytical method to compute the probability of successful message reception and mean message transmission delay in IEEE 802.11p vehicular ad-hoc network with periodic broadcasting of messages. We investigate the influence of beaconing period on the above performance metrics.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114985212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The same technology is also expected to concurrently support a range of non-safety applications including real-time traffic information, mobile entertainment, and access to the Internet. The standard has specified an explicit multi-channel structure whereby safety and non-safety transmissions will occur at different channels. Consequently, a vehicle with a conventional single-radio transceiver will need to continuously switch between the safety and the non-safety modes of operation. The interval spent in the safety mode (safety interval) at each cycle is a critical parameter that directly limits the availability of the technology for commercial use. Using simulation, we show that the safety interval required to satisfy the reliability of safety applications is a function of traffic density on the road. Given that in most roads traffic density is expected to vary during the day, we propose dynamic adjustment of the safety interval based on the traffic context. To further motivate the concept of traffic aware vehicular communications, we evaluate the performance of three dynamic channel coordination algorithms using empirical traffic data collected from the roads around the city of Sydney, Australia. A key finding is that, the time-of-day is an effective context that can prevent a vehicular radio from keep running in the safety mode unnecessarily, thereby enhancing the commercial opportunity of the technology. We further demonstrate that the use of the location context can dramatically improve the performance of the basic time-of-day algorithms.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115240156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within a service discovery architecture, the way the service data are gathered, called service registration, influences the performance of the system. In particular, it affects the consistency and query response time. Most of the existing architectures use the so-called soft-state approach with explicit deregistration. In this paper we focus on studying the advantage of this particular choice, especially its impact on the system consistency.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114947050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
