Cognitive radio networks rely on detecting whether a particular segment of the radio spectrum is currently in use and to exploit the temporarily unused spectrum rapidly without interfering with the transmissions of other users. Thus, one of the most important and critical components of the cognitive radio is spectrum sensing and accordingly, detection of primary users. Recently proposed cooperative spectrum sensing methods do not consider errors occurring during the transmission of local cognitive radio decisions to the cognitive base station. However, perfect communication is clearly not the case in realistic cooperative spectrum sensing scenarios and might lead to misleading performance result interpretations. In this paper, we extend the cooperative spectrum sensing model to admit transmission imperfections and propose two simple, hardware-friendly and effective primary user detectors operating on noisy local cognitive radio decisions. We present simulation results investigating the performance loss incurred by considering realistic channels with varying signal-to-noise ratio values. Moreover, we compare the two proposed cooperative spectrum sensing algorithms in various practical scenarios.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114725495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider both unbounded and bounded domains, specifically squares, and the impact of border effects is also shown. Random fluctuations as well as a distance-dependent deterministic path-loss are accounted for in our radio channel model. In particular, we deal with randomly shaped wireless footprints, rather than with the less realistic (yet widely adopted) disk model, which is a special case of our channel model. Nodes are organized in a tree-based topology with trees rooted at the sinks (multi-hop communications). The approach allows the computation of the probability that a randomly chosen sensor is not isolated, from which the probability that a certain amount of nodes are connected can be easily derived. The mean energy spent by the network is also accounted for. The model provides guidelines to optimally design the tree-based topology, taking into account connectivity and energy consumption issues.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114784836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focusing on the point-to-multipoint mode, where the base station decides about resource allocations in both uplink and downlink, this paper proposes a scheduling algorithm to support UGS and BE traffic classes, where the UGS service is based on a token bucket scheme. An analytical study has been performed to validate the simulator. Simulation runs have permitted to prove the goodness of the proposed scheduler as a comparison with a reference scheduler developed by the NIST Institute.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133862475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the heterogeneity of networking systems in ubiquitous and pervasive computing environments, network service description and discovery in ubiquitous and pervasive grids face new challenges that require enhancement of current existing grid service discovery technologies. This paper proposes a new approach for describing service capabilities of network services in ubiquitous and pervasive grids and develop a technology for discovering network services that meet the performance requirements of grid applications. The application of network calculus techniques makes the developed technologies independent with the underlying networking platform, thus applicable to heterogeneous network services in ubiquitous and pervasive computing environments. The approach is also scalable to support grid network service composition.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116837765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing service composition approaches mostly do not consider network heterogeneity or devices' capabilities simultaneously. This limits the composition mechanism, as not all the devices will be able to use the same set of network protocols. The user preferences are also not considered when selecting a particular service or device. In this paper, we propose a solution for ad hoc user task composition based on a graph-theoretic approach. We model both the user task and the underlying network services, along with their requirements and capabilities, as graphs. The heterogeneity of communication protocols is also considered in the graph. After an early elimination of unnecessary devices, and hence services, from the network services graph, based on user preferences and task requirements, a matching is performed between the user task graph and the simplified network services graph to achieve the composed user application.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117230112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these networks, the mobile station MS has the functionality to select an AP, based on specific criteria. A key challenge is how to achieve overall load balancing in the network, during the AP reselection procedure in a way that will achieve the optimum utilization of network resources. The conventional approaches typically use the strongest received signal from the side of MS (RX Level) as the criterion, without considering the traffic load of each AP. In this work, we present two easy to implement WLAN resource management mechanisms that are fully compatible with the existing standards and mechanisms already supported by IEEE802.11 networks.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"222 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131689985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To provide P2P application service on vehicular wireless networks, chord overlay on vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is applied. Most P2P protocols, including Chord, are designed for wired-line network, and might perform poorly in mobile networks. We propose Mobile Chord (MChord) enhancement to improve the performance of Chord over VANET. These techniques are aggressive table update, overlay table broadcasting, greedy forwarding, and passive bootstrapping. We also take network layer traffic into protocol design consideration to alleviate congestion. Through realistic vehicular mobility simulations on NS-2 platform, we find the proposed mobile chord outperforms the original chord in various aspects such as application layer forwarding steps, query response, correct query response, and application delay.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115302540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the primary advantages of OWC system are the high data rate, unlicensed spectrum of operation, quick and inexpensive setup. Meanwhile, unique OWC features such as the node, link and bandwidth availability due to interferences from weather or others remain as the challenge for designing a robust and high-performance OWC network. In this paper, we propose new Integer Linear Programming formulations to model and optimize OWC topology design while taking into the node, link and bandwidth availability, and partial request accommodation into consideration. Our analysis and results provide valuable insights into designing robust and reconfigurable OWC networks.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"54 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124861865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
