Abstract

High altitude platform stations (HAPs) are widely identified as a potential infrastructure that is able to deliver the third generation (3G) and beyond 3G mobile communications services in a spectral efficient and cost effective way. The paper starts from previous studies regarding call admission and power control schemes on UMTS-HAPs forward link pointing out few issues and limitations; then three different call handling strategies have been proposed and tested throughout an ad hoc mobility and network simulator well suited for HAPs system and able to support both conversational and streaming UMTS traffic classes.
