Over half a century already, this genre has emerged as a separate discourse (in this article, the authors call it a “Reimagined Fairy Tale,” considering the memory of the genre). Such modificated fairy tale is simultaniously the result of the postmodern world perception (intertextuality, playfulness, gamification, multilevel text, irony, etc.) and a critical thought (deconstruction, denial of logocentrism), and represents an extensive material for research both from the point of view of literary criticism and from interdisciplinary positions. Using the example of the modern literary tale by R. Shirman “Hunger,” which is based on the folk story about Hansel and Gretel, the authors attempt to trace how the multilevel coding of the text takes place using the transformation of Jungian archetypes and deconstruction of binary oppositions that underlie them on the one hand, and literary and religious reminiscences, and allusions on the other. The authors trace how the text passes into the category of open ones and allows the reader to choose himself which of the meanings of the tale is closer to him. Yesenin’s poem “Under the red elm, the porch and the yard...” (1917) accepted in the Complete Works of S.A. Yesenin (1995–2002). The work introduces on evidentiary grounds a number of previously unknown sources of Yesenin’s ideas about the life-creating nature of sound. The study also presents the results of textual analysis of the white autograph of S.A. Yesenin’s poem “Under the red elm, the porch and the yard...”. These searches allowed us to challenge A.A. Kozlovsky’s arguments, who dated the poem “Under the red elm porch and yard...” to 1917, on documentary grounds. The author of the article proposes revise the dating of this work in favor of 1916 on the basis of a comparative analysis with another poem — “Your voice is invisible, like smoke in a hut...” (1916). This analysis demonstrates the artistic-philosophical, metrical and compositional unity of the two works, due to the general context and specific sources. Nenarokova","doi":"10.22455/2500-4247-2023-8-2-108-139","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22455/2500-4247-2023-8-2-108-139","url":null,"abstract":"The article analyses the imagery of John Bunyan’s allegorical treatise The Pilgrim’s Progress, which belongs to the most important works of both English and world culture, and its visual embodiment tradition. The illustration series for Bunyan’s book were created almost immediately after its first publication in 1678. The study shows that even the early illustrations for The Pilgrim’s Progress can be characterized as creolized texts, since they form a single complex with accompanying texts. Stable images associated with one or another episode of the book, are formed already at the end of the 17th century. They are used in illustrated books and comics in the 20th–21st centuries. Each of the images is the result of the development or revision of a long pictorial tradition. Although each image is based on the corresponding fragment of the book, its specific realizations reflect both the artist’s ideas and a certain artistic style of the time. As the language of culture underwent a global change at the turn of the 18th–19th centuries, the illustrations for The Pilgrim’s Progress gradually became more realistic, allegorism in them receded into the background. The artists of the 20th–21st centuries turned to new forms of material presentation, that is to illustrated books and comics. {"title":"The “Dacha Myth” in Russian Literature of the Turn of the 20th–21st Centuries: The Case of Yuri Mamleev","authors":"O. Mamleev, primarily his novel “Wandering Time” (2000). Based on the socio-cultural evolution of the phenomenon of the dacha in the USSR, the dynamics of the “dacha topos” in Mamleev's prose is traced: in the 1960s (“Connecting Rods”, etc.) this is the final apotheosis of the Soviet neo-myth about the Russian landowner's estate as a “nest” of violence and vice; in the 1990s–2000s. (“Wings of Horror”, “Wandering Time”, “World and Laughter”, etc.) this is the birth of a new myth about the post-Soviet dacha with clear positive connotations. To understand the innovative content of the “dacha myth”, the philosophical theses of Mamleev (“Last Doctrine” and “Russian Doctrine”), as well as the essence of his “metaphysical realism” and “metaphysical patriotism” are considered. On this basis, the analysis of six dacha loci in the novel “Wandering Time” is carried out. It is concluded that Mamleev's “dacha myth” is a fundamentally new category compared to the “estate myths\" of the Silver Age and the Soviet era, since it is not based on the mythologeme of “paradise on earth” and not the exposure of the “exploitative” “hell”, but the doctrine of “Eternal Russia”, which more than “paradise” and “hell” combined. Despite a number of common European meanings assigned to falcons and hawks in medieval bestiaries and hunting treatises, the semantics of hunting birds may have differed significantly in works of different national and genre traditions. The Nibelungenlied and Kudrun were epic in origin and content, but created in the era of the courtesan. The poets’ desire to “modernize” the sound of ancient tales manifested itself at different levels of the text, including hunting birds’ scenes. These scenes also demonstrate the strength of the genre nature of these poems, when elements “borrowed” from the courtly culture are transformed to fit adequately into the epic text. The authors narrow down the research to two countries — Scotland and Armenia — because of the common features of their children’s literature: the use of a different language in fiction, the approach to the cultural component in fiction and the influence of the countries’ past. The research has two distinct directions: based on selected texts by Scottish writers the paper discusses the issue of transmitting culture codes in a multi-voiced medium. Further, based on the text by Narine Abgarian, a Russian writer of Armenian origin, the culture codes of childhood in the multicultural setting are discussed. It is argued that despite the current trends in the international book market, children’s literature containing authentic cultural information should be promoted. Goethe’s “The Word to Young Poets” („Ein Wort für junge Dichter,“ 1833) and the article written in connection with A.M. Gorky death by the theorist of Marxist aesthetics D. (G.) Lukács “The Liberator” („Der Befreier,“ 1936). The subject of the analysis is Lukách’s interpretation of the ‛liberator’ concept used by Goethe in relation to his own work. Lukács, who chose this keyword from Goethe’s paper as the title of his own article, tries within the framework of the theme set by Goethe about the liberating mission of the writer to prove the validity of applying the theses of the German classic in the era of proletarian art. In the course of the undertaken analysis, the author of the article comes to the conclusion about the selectivity of Lukács’s approaches to research material. That was dictated by the specificities of the functional-target settings the author of “The Liberator,” dedicated not just to a great writer per se, but to the classic of socialist realism, was guided by. This is the destiny of flamenco which consists of three elements, that is music, poetry and dance and became the cultural practice of southern Spain during the 19th century. In that same century in Russia, the genre of chastushka was formed. Like the flamenco couplets, it flourished in the vulnerable and precarious social layer of the urban population formed by the peasants deprived of land who went to earn a living in the cities. The synchrony of the global socio-political processes, one of which and also the most key throughout the 19th century was industrialization, suggests that in some social groups in different countries could arise and develop similar forms of art so it is interesting to compare milestones in the history of flamenco copla and chastushka, analyze themes and their lexical content. The aim of the paper is to discover similarity and difference between two folk genres at a certain historical stage of their existence. James. Particularly, the author of the article studies the novel’s conceptual and thematic elements regarding dystopian canon. Firstly, the article characterizes literary dystopia. Secondly, it defines the level of novel’s research in Russian and English literary studies. Thirdly, using the methods of genre typology and artistic analysis, the article investigates conceptual and thematic content of the novel, that is defined, according to the canon, by the concept of power, theme of an authoritarian state, problems of freedom restriction, progress of material values and regress of spiritual ones and by the complex of motifs (destruction of the past, standardization, prevention, etc.). The results show that the dystopia The Children of Men was written in the conceptual and substantial aspect within the bounds of the genre tradition. At the same time the motif of family ties’ destruction and decay of family is presented originally: the central image of the child gains sacred meaning. The objects of consideration were the letters and journalistic texts of the writer relating to 1910–1935, the subject was the images, sayings, maxims of Saadi reflected in them. The purpose of the study is to identify and analyze the sources of reminiscences from Saadi’s works, specifically their translated editions in Russian and the main European languages. The study found that, firstly, Bunin used as sources of Saadi’s texts not only the “classical” translations of books “Bustan” (1257) and “Gulistan” (1258), which appeared by the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries, but also related to one degree or another scientific, popular science and fiction literature by the poet’s creative work.
