Teaching and learning process are also affected. These technologies emphasize the fact that learning is not always linked to an institution or a period of time. However institutional learning systems do not support this concept and this makes necessary the definition of Personal Learning Environments. These new learning environments do not to replace the traditional ones so the coexistence is necessary. This paper describes the experience of the application of one of those personal environments implemented for mobile devices that is able to exchange information with the institutional systems. From this experience it is possible to say the definition of mobile Personal Learning Environments is possible, it increases learners' motivation and enriches their learning; and at the same time it is possible to take into account what the learners do beyond the institution.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127040212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every year, in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), a diagnostic test is given to incoming first-year students, consistently revealing problems in basic mathematics. In Portugal a similar test is given in Coimbra Institute of Engineering (ISEC). In this work details of both tests are given, along with the results of both of these tests. In addition this project intends to tweak some questions and add new questions to both tests so that we will have 12 questions, which are exactly the same, given to both sets of first year students.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117029165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the awareness of this learning, its benefits and its potential is still not very clear. In engineering contexts, informal learning could play an invaluable role helping students or employees to engage with peers and also with more experience colleagues, exchanging ideas and discussing problems. This work presents an initial set of results of the piloting phase of a project (TRAILER) where an innovative service based on Information & Communication Technologies was developed in order to aid the collection and visibility of informal learning. This set of results concerns engineering contexts (academic and business), from the learners' perspective. The major idea that emerged from these piloting trials was that it represented a good way of collecting, recording and sharing informal learning that otherwise could easily be forgotten. Several benefits were reported between the two communities such as being helpful in managing competences and human resources within an institution.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121633855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This practice has proven to be a great instrument to improve students' skills and practical competencies. In addition, this collaboration generally results in great benefits to industry. A national cork stopper producer hoping to greatly improve its knowledge on the cork stabilization process and trace the evolution of contaminants signed an agreement for a Masters' student internship. An experimental project was implemented in order to monitor the contaminant 2, 4, 6-trichloroanisole, responsible for the traditional “cork taint” in wine during the cork stabilization process. The conclusions obtained in this preliminary study revealed a marked decrease in the contaminant content during the stabilization period of eight months reinforcing the idea that stabilization has an important role in the final quality of the cork stopper. Mean reduction values of 87 and 71% after 167 stabilization days were obtained in planks with or without yellow stain respectively. Similar values of contamination in both types of cork planks were observed after a stabilization period of five months, although the initial levels of contamination were quite different.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133211968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Until now, they have been based strictly on software solutions. Meanwhile, research into Remote Laboratories has shown that they are a viable, low-cost solution for experimentation in an engineering context, providing uninterrupted access, low-maintenance requirements, and a heightened sense of reality when compared to simulations. This paper will propose a solution where both approaches are combined to deliver a Remote Laboratory-based Serious Game for use in engineering and school education. The platform for this system is the WebLab-Deusto Framework, already well-tested within the remote laboratory context, and based on open standards. The laboratory allows users to control a mobile robot in a labyrinth environment and take part in an interactive game where they must locate and correctly answer several questions, the subject of which can be adapted to educators' needs. It also integrates the Google Blockly graphical programming language, allowing students to learn basic programming and logic principles without needing to understand complex syntax.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134590349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces an online Web-Lab based system that provides a web integrated development environment (WIDE) for students doing practical programming activities and assignment in a distance learning. The proposed system provides students an editor for writing, editing, updating, compiling and executing their programming code source in the Web. The system is also interactive by introducing tools such Chat-Room, E-Mail, and Forum among learners and instructors interact. The results of using WIDE are very encouraging for enhancing novices students programming skills by allowing them learning and practicing on the web, for instructors to use the recorded information to track the learner's progress.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"76 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133020537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a management philosophy, Lean Manufacturing focuses on the elimination of activities that do not create any type of value and therefore are considered waste. For companies to successfully implement the Lean Manufacturing philosophy it is crucial that the human resources of the organization have the necessary training, for which proper tools are required. At the same time, higher education institutions need innovative tools to increase the attractiveness of engineering curricula and develop a higher level of knowledge among students, improving their employability. This paper describes how Lean Learning Academy, an international collaboration project between five EU universities and five companies, from SME to Multinational/Global companies, developed and applied an innovative training programme for Engineers on Lean Manufacturing, a successful alternative to the traditional teaching methods in engineering courses.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114252645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The used strategies to carry out this action are frequently founded on Problem Based Learning that start from a given state and point forward to a target state. The possibility or the performance of this action depends on previous states if the present one was caused by or resulted from earlier stages. This often happens in engineering education if the achieved results do not match the desired ones, e.g. when programming code is being developing or when the cause of the wrong behavior of an electronic circuit is being identified. It is thus important to also prepare students to go in the reverse way, i.e. given a start state generate the explanation or even the principles that underlie it. Later on, this sort of skills will be important. For instance, to a doctor making a patient's story or to an engineer discovering the source of a malfunction. Among others, this learning methodology presents pedagogical advantages besides the enhanced preparation of students to their future work. The present work relates an automation project developed by a group of students, in a laboratory. The main target was to improve the performance of a given machine. However, in a scenario of reverse problem-base learning, students had first to discover and characterize the entire machines function before being allowed (and being able) to propose a solution for the presented problem.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125357719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To bridge this gap between mathematical theory and practice, we have designed a course in mathematical modelling and problem solving at Chalmers University of Technology. The main purpose of the present study is to investigate and better understand what challenges engineering students experience when dealing with mathematical modelling problems and what strategies they use to overcome those challenges. Data was collected through semistructured interviews with six students early in the course and the interviews were based on two problems that the students had solved during the course. The data was analysed using basic strategies for qualitative analysis and led to the identification of two central challenges experienced by the students as well as several strategies for overcoming them. The first challenge is that students are not fully aware of the importance of understanding the problem, and the second is that students get stuck because they do not sufficiently consider alternatives in a non-linear solution process. While these issues have little to do with mathematical modelling as such, the modelling problems given clearly reveal these shortcomings, which we see as lacking problem solving skills. Our findings confirm the importance of teaching mathematical modelling and problem solving, and in a more general setting we see cognitive apprenticeship as a promising framework for teaching and learning in engineering education.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126988695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our views are the consequence of 40 years' experience performing education, research and training on electrical and computer engineering mainly at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) University of Lisbon, but also in two other Higher Education Institutions in Portugal - ISCTE (Lisboa) and EST (Setúbal). We have learned that professor and student need to be motivated to perform their active roles in the learning process. They both need to become educated listeners. We have also learned that beyond the mission subjects of an engineering program, there is a large set of knowledge that must be acquired, if someone will reach a really “high” education. The professor's role remains essential, although man-made computer-based learning methods and tools can ease the dissemination of knowledge and increase the opportunity to educate a large set of people. The importance of project-based learning, using engineering design as test vehicle, is highlighted. Finally, challenges in quality assessment are pointed out, in order to guarantee that too many statistics and indicators do not smash creativity and efficiency.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128010280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
