Lifelong learning and the ability to continuously learn are only possible if students have more control of their own learning. This study is a first step towards an adaptation and validation of a Portuguese version of the Personal Responsibility Orientation to Self-Direction in Learning Scale (PRO-SDLS) to undergraduate engineering students. Using factor and reliability analysis, 12 items of the translated scale showed strong validity and reliability. The findings indicate that the PRO-SDLS can be used with engineering undergraduate students. More data collection and confirmatory analysis is suggested.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134007774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There were created several games for that purpose, the paper presents two of them. These games were used for educational purposes in last years and they were positively evaluated by the course participants. The students are more motivated, they carefully watch the source code and remember it easily, which helps them in future, in the future programming. The computer games summarize several parts of the basic course programming, such as conditions, cycles, working with files etc.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122547649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, industry is becoming more demanding, as society is becoming more and more aware of the global needs and consequences of industrial practices. Under this scope, higher education needs not only to follow but also to lead these trends. Therefore, the School of Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ISEP), a Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) training partner in Portugal, prepared and presented its Sustainability Action Plan (PASUS), with the main objective of creating a new kind of engineers, with Sustainable Development at the core of their graduation and MsC degrees. In this paper, the main strategies and activities of the referred plan along with the strategic approach, which guided its development and implementation, will be presented in detail. Additionally, a reflection about the above mentioned bridge between concept and application will be established and justified, in the framework of the action plan. Although in most of the situations, there was no prior discussion or specific request, many of the graduation and post-graduation programmes offered by ISEP already include courses that attend to PASUS philosophy. As a consequence, the number of Master thesis, Graduation projects and R&D projects that address sustainability problems has grown substantially, a proof that for ISEP community, sustainability really matters!","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132374566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This multi-functional platform, divided in different sections directed to several typical chemical processes, includes multimedia libraries, simulators, applications and case studies to better understand the chemical processes. The focus will be on the synergistic effects of combining in the same platform different tools and also different subjects. The benefit for the students of the approach followed is discussed, namely on what concerns knowledge integration. These web tools support the autonomous study of the students, contributing to develop their critical and creative thinking, and enabling more practical approaches to the different chemical processes. In this manuscript a special attention will be given to the use of interactive simulators to enhance the understanding of Chemical Processes by the students.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126150284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On one hand, they inadequately prepare engineering students to engage in collaborative partnerships (essential for the practicing engineer) and, on the other hand, they promote passive learning and contribute to a compartmentalized curriculum. These strategies may not prepare students for the innovative and flexible role of engineers in today's society. Using non-traditional learning strategies is essential to prepare engineers ready to succeed in their professional life. To contribute to enhancing the problem solving skills and higher order thinking of the graduates in Civil Engineering program of University of Aveiro, Portugal, two complementary courses on Geotechnical subjects have been redesigned using non-traditional learning models: Soil Mechanics I and II. The non-traditional strategies include cooperative and collaborative learning models using team projects or problems. These models have been implemented since 2007/2008. The nontraditional learning strategies used are described and discussed, pointing out how they can contribute to the development of problem solving and high order thinking skills. The students' reactions to these models are addressed and the strategies implemented to promote their acceptance are presented. To assess the impact of the models implemented three different and complementary strategies were used: students' feedback during the semester; monitoring of marks; questionnaires at the end of the semester. The evolution of the students' response to these models is discussed using data collected in the courses. The models have been adapted to overcome some of the difficulties faced during their implementation.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124726130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, students display some difficulties in this subject, mainly due to the lack of educational tools that are intuitive, versatile and graphical. Existing tools are not adequate enough or are very specific. In this paper, an educational MIPS simulator, DrMIPS, is described. This tool simulates the execution of an assembly program on the CPU and displays the datapath graphically. Registers, data memory and assembled code are also displayed and a “performance mode” is also provided. Both unicycle and pipeline implementations are supported and the CPUs and their instruction sets are configurable. The tool is currently available for PCs and Android tablets, and is fairly intuitive and versatile on both platforms.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"48 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114010742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
