With recent developments in technology, new medical devices and new ways of monitoring and acquisition of physiological information emerge. So, not only medicals but also biomedical engineers must be prepared and aware of the characteristics and requirements needed. Following this tendency, this paper describes the developments of a remote lab for the study of biomedical and physiological systems in undergraduate and graduate level. The remote acquisition of ECG and body acceleration data was the experiments performed and evaluated by a group of biomedical engineering students. The experiments were conducted according to a protocol designed for the physiological data acquisition task. A pre and post questionnaires were applied to a group of students to obtain qualitative and quantitative evaluation to validate the remote experiment. The first results show a very positive attitude of the graduate students, motivating for further developments in this area.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122996448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Portugal there is an increasing number of students applying for postgraduate training and search for guidance. The study expounds how this process on advanced studies is seen. To achieve this objective, perspectives on important mentoring relationships of doctoral engineering students from different years were taken. Several semistructured interviews allowed to gather evidence concerning the way in which each student recognize and perceive their own reality, providing information to enable establish relationships. The focus of these interviews was to identify how students perceived the mentoring process influence in their academic path. Topics such communication, differing expectations between mentor and mentee, trust and relational aspects were addressed. The findings of this study revealed that motivation is the most important factor in the mentoring relationship being gender the least important.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125909176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The students, organized in multicultural teams, are challenged to solve real world multidisciplinary problems, accounting for 30 ECTU. The EPS package, although focused on project development (20 ECTU), includes a series of complementary seminars aimed at fostering soft, project-related and engineering transversal skills (10 ECTU). This paper presents the study plan, resources, operation and results of the EPS@ISEP that was created in 2011 to apply the best engineering education practices and promote the internationalization of ISEP. The results show that the EPS@ISEP students acquire during one semester the scientific, technical and soft competences necessary to propose, design and implement a solution for a multidisciplinary problem.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126151514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students' views on the reasons for fraud and the factors inhibiting such behavior will also be highlighted, recognizing their relevance to ethical reflection. A face-to-face survey was applied to Portuguese higher education engineering students, resulting on 1527 valid responses. Overall, students recognize the existence of fraud. Engineering Portuguese students clearly distinguish the seriousness of different types of academic fraud. They tend to condemn not fraud itself but the types of fraud permeated by economic and social factors; i.e., family and social capital resources.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115999638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Presently, programmes are being assessed at several different levels, locally, or even countrywide. In this paper, we take as a starting point the template that all Portuguese higher education institutions have to fill for each curricular unit, for programme assessment purposes, and propose a more precise and informative format. Based on the literature, we argue this new template format fosters teacher reflection and provides additional and easier to compare data for accreditation boards, and the whole education community, most notably, students.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115022226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless it is often difficult to engage students in immersive international experiences that develop inter-cultural awareness. Especially undergraduate engineering students have to deal with packed curricula with little or no room for languages and an often unforgiving structure that puts them a year out of course sequences if they do travel for a study abroad. In this paper, we examine how an online engineering education can be a transformational factor in this challenge. When designed to create interactive, engaging learning, an online platform can support joint international experiences that develop cultural competency without requiring the time and expenses that are often a barrier for students. We present a joint online engineering course designed and implemented by the University of Virginia (UVa) and the TU Dortmund University (TU) with students from both countries. Such approaches may be of special interest for countries, that want to work together on the educational sector without facing language differences - like Portugal and Brazil for example.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123415188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a fundamental physical theory taught in engineering schools at university level. In this theory the electromagnetic field is a vector field permeating space. An important aspect relating to students difficulties and misconceptions is the difficulty in visualizing vector fields. With the goal of enhancing student understanding and studying student engagement we have developed high quality 3D visualizations of electromagnetic situations. These make use of accurate computation of the field lines, together with realistic rendering using the open source software Blender. We present examples of electrostatic situations with both an assessment of the student understanding and an evaluation of the students' perceptions of the importance of the visualizations. Complex interplay between visualization specific issues and the abstract notion of the field is identified in the students' conceptions. It is found that the visualizations are not used as substitutes of other learning resources. They are perceived as allowing a quick access to content and prompting motivation. The adequacy of the visualization to the subject content as well as the capacity to use it as self-assessment is valued by the students.","PeriodicalId":409846,"journal":{"name":"2013 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123903814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
