Proper adjustment of interleaver size and iteration leads to considerable improvement in BER performance of Turbo code under AWGN channel condition. In this paper, an optimized Asymmetric Turbo code has been proposed to improve BER performance ominously both in “waterfall” and “error-floor” regions using Cuckoo Search algorithm. The Recursive Systematic Convolutional (RSC) encoder with different poly2trellis has been used to demonstrate the improvement in BER characteristics both in low as well as high SNR regions. Moreover, the variation of BER values with the block lengths of the code has also been observed. Finally, the BER performance of the proposed Cuckoo-Search (CS) optimized Asymmetric Turbo code has been compared with conventional as well as Harmony Search (HS) optimized Asymmetric Turbo Code.","PeriodicalId":409794,"journal":{"name":"2014 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116565223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hazards associated with earthquakes are commonly referred to as seismic hazards [1]. Almost all earthquakes are preceded by physical processes commonly known as earthquake precursors [1]. Earthquake prediction is feasible by measurement and analysis of the amplitudes and spectra of ground motion. An instrumentation system is presented here for the detection of the variations of these precursors which changes well before the event. It consists of a sensor coupled to an embedded system to enable precise detection of variation in physical parameters. This helps us to interface it with the microcontroller through inter integrated circuits and send an alarm in the audio and visual form, when the parameters exceed beyond certain critical threshold. The measurements of the dynamic variations of the parameters indicate a departure from the routine values. The instrumentation system allows a comparative monitoring of such parameters with previously set standards along with an alarm system to trigger off during exceptional variations. This alarm enables us to put in place the preventive safety measures. The instrumentation includes the temperature sensor [5] (LM35) as the predominant sensor for detecting the relative parameters from the simulations of the earthquake.","PeriodicalId":409794,"journal":{"name":"2014 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131185884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach is based on combined clue from skin colour and minor motion detection. For skin colour detection, explicit thresholding of CbCr colour channels is used and for minor motion detection morphological differences of multiple consecutive images has been used. MATLAB® is used for processing. Relatively small part of exposed human body in the frame of an image is sufficient for detection. The approach is computationally efficient, potentially real time and robust. The combined technique gives improved performance compared to each individual technique. OFDM is multicarrier modulation technique which offers advantages like Immunity to ISI, timing jitter and robust performance in multi path fading. But the major drawback of OFDM system is that it is very sensitive to carrier frequency offset, causing loss of orthogonality between the sub carriers. The frequency offset can be caused due to mismatch in local oscillator at the transmitter or receiver or by the Doppler phenomenon in mobile channels. Carrier frequency offset degrades the performance of OFDM system by introducing intercarrier interference (ICI). In this paper Raised Cosine windowing is used to mitigate the effect of intercarrier interference in OFDM system and performance of the system is evaluated in terms of bit error rate(BER), intercarrier interference power(ICI) and carrier to interference ratio (CIR).","PeriodicalId":409794,"journal":{"name":"2014 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON)","volume":"2005 45","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132899117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chord protocol faces stale routing entries (finger table entries) due to the presence of malicious peers in the network. We propose a trust-based routing algorithm for efficient service discovery for Chord network. The proposed algorithm improves the data accessibility in the presence of malicious peers by computing a trust value for each peer. The trust value is calculated using a Bayesian network based trust model. In this algorithm, the finger table entries including the trust attribute are retrieved using an improved querying algorithm while identifying a trusted peer. The trust is computed based on entities such as age, number of uploads and downloads of a peer. The proposed approach is flexible(one or many entities can be chosen to compute trust) and can be customized based on application requirements. Performance evaluation has been performed by considering performance metrics, such as, responses of queries, number of uploads and downloads and trust value of a peer in the P2P network.","PeriodicalId":409794,"journal":{"name":"2014 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134613278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The speed control of induction motor is very important to achieve maximum torque and efficiency. In the same period, there were also advances in control methods and Artificial Intelligent (AI) techniques, including expert system, fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithm. Researchers soon realized that the performance of induction motor drives can be enhanced by adopting artificial-intelligent based methods. This paper presents an integrated environment for speed control of Induction Motor (IM) using artificial intelligent controller. The integrated environment allows users to compare simulation results between classical and artificial intelligent controllers. The fuzzy logic controller and artificial neural network controllers are also introduced to the system for keeping the motor speed to be constant when the load varies. The performance of fuzzy logic and artificial neural network based controllers' is compared with that of the conventional proportional integral controller. The performance of the Induction motor drive has been analyzed for constant and variable loads.","PeriodicalId":409794,"journal":{"name":"2014 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131948073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To lessen this burden several renewable energy sources are used - one of which is photovoltaic energy. The source of solar /photovoltaic energy is the radiation of the sun which is abundant in nature. A solar cell produces electric energy when sunlight is incident on it. Photon (produced due to interaction between light and matter) hits the p-n junction of a solar cell (made up of photosensitive material) produces electrons in abundance, which may be routed through for proper functioning of the load. The amount of current produced by a solar cell/panel depends on various factors due to which the state variables of a cell keep changing. The various state variables in question manifest different behaviour as time and place changes and empirical formulae of a solar cell does not suffice. In absence of such empirical formula, one has to rely on estimation in order to predict the behaviour of a solar cell. In this paper the estimation of state of a solar cell has been done by a Kalman filter, which is a linear quadratic estimator. Though the behavior of a PV cell is overall non-linear, but the EKF has been avoided due to its complexity and Kalman Filter has been adopted instead. Suitable assumptions are made regarding linearity of the system and gaussianity of noise, inherent to the Kalman filter and a piecewise linear model has been used to estimate and predict the short-circuit current of a PV cell. A comparative study with running average has also been made to prove that Kalman filter is a better option as an estimator than its first generation counterpart.","PeriodicalId":409794,"journal":{"name":"2014 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON)","volume":"187 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124317212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Continuous system monitoring is essential for security and reliable operation of power grids. State-space models are used to estimate the states of the system from available measurements. A malicious user can introduce an error in measurements or bad data can be introduced at different points in the grid resulting in unpredictable behavior of the control algorithms in SCADA systems, which use the state information to make decisions. Bad data detection is part of the state estimation process, but if the attacker has complete knowledge of the system and access to large enough number of measurements, these attacks can be made undetectable. Various techniques to introduce such undetectable attacks have been discussed in literature with focus on DC models. A data history based heuristic algorithm was proposed recently that can detect such attack. However, this technique fails when data attack model is a slow ramp. We propose a novel technique based on rate of change of largest singular value of the data matrix that can detect even slow attacks on the system with focus on AC models.","PeriodicalId":409794,"journal":{"name":"2014 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133915004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
