This prior study was conducted to analyze the changes in health-related physical fitness and immunocytes in an elderly male subject after performing elbow plank exercises.Methods: The participant was a 61-year-old man who had no experience in performing the elbow plank. Elbow plank exercises were performed for 30 min a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. The intensity of was checked daily with ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). His goal was to reach an RPE between 12 and 14, at which a 1 min rest was given before repeating the process with a progressively higher RPE every 10 min.Results: Compared with pre-values, (1) health related physical fitness factors increased after 4 weeks. (2) Body weight, skeletal muscle mass, and basal metabolic rate increased, whereas body fat mass and fat percentage decreased. (3) Certain variables of complete blood count showed positive changes, while others did not. Specifically, NK cells (CD56) and cytotoxicity were improved.Conclusions: This study confirmed that performing elbow plank exercises improved all factors of physical fitness and the immunocyte function in an elderly male. Therefore, 20.73 min (9.27 min of rest) of plank exercise is recommended for elderly men to prevent deterioration of physical fitness and immunocyte function while staying at home, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.","PeriodicalId":409580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Men’s Health","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128097112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of PD on the growth of PC3 human prostate cancer cells and the underlying molecular mechanisms.Materials and methods: Cell viability, apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were measured using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, nuclear staining and flow cytometry analysis. To investigate the mechanism of anti-cancer activity of PD, expression of apoptosis regulatory protein, caspase activity, and generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were determined.Results: PD treatment reduced PC3 cell proliferation, which was associated with induction of apoptosis, and accompanied by increased expression of Fas, Fas-ligand (FasL) and pro-apoptotic Bax, and decreased expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and truncation of Bid. PD also inhibited expression of c-FLIP and members of inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, and activated caspases, resulting in an increase in poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage. However, in the presence of a pan-caspase inhibitor, PD-mediated growth inhibition and apoptosis were significantly protected. PD also destroyed the integrity of mitochondria due to the loss of MMP, leading to cytosolic release of cytochrome c. Moreover, the levels of ROS were markedly increased by PD treatment, which was significantly attenuated by the ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). Furthermore, NAC fully suppressed PD-induced apoptotic events and cytotoxicity.Conclusions: The results of this study show that PD had chemopreventive potential through the induction of ROS-dependent apoptosis in PC3 cells, and that this compound could be useful for developing an effective and selective natural source to inhibit cancer cell proliferation.","PeriodicalId":409580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Men’s Health","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133790979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increasing strength performance effect of BRJ has also started to arouse interest in combat sports. This study aims to investigate the effects of acute dietary nitrate supplementation on lower and upper body isokinetic strength of trained Greco-Roman wrestlers.Materials and methods: The study is a double-blind, randomized, crossover design in which eight trained male Greco-Roman wrestlers (21.87 ± 2.3 years; height 176.87 cm ± 4.1 cm; body weight 76.75 kg ± 5.4 kg) consumed beetroot juice (140 mL) or placebo (140 mL, cherry juice with lemon juice) 150 min before performing isokinetic strength. Participants performed knee extensors and flexors and shoulder internal and external rotator isokinetic strength test (in the dominant limbs) concentrically at 60◦ with by Cybex device (Cybex NORM®, Humac, CA, USA). The same trial procedure was repeated with the other supplement (BRJ or Placebo) in a second testing session five days later. BRJ and Placebo trials' isokinetic strength values were compared with parametric testing (paired sample T-test).Results: Although there was a significant difference in peak torque of shoulder internal and external rotator values in favor of BRJ (P < 0.05), there was no significant difference in the knee strength test. Additionally, all average isokinetic strength values were significantly increased in the BRJ trial (P < 0.05).Conclusions: These results suggest that BRJ can be used as an ergogenic effect for improving strength values in Greco-Roman wrestling.","PeriodicalId":409580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Men’s Health","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114509041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to analyze parameters of non-muscle invasive bladder tumors and to identify and validate potential tumor markers with a prognostic role in this condition.Material and methods: 463 patients diagnosed with non-muscle invasive urothelial tumors, between January 2016 and June 2020, hospitalized at the Urology Clinic in Târgu Mureș, after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) were investigated. Inclusion criteria were: non-muscle invasive tumors (Ta, T1, CIS), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) determination 2 weeks prior to TURBT and complete follow-up of patients. NLR cut-off was set at 3.Results: 371 people diagnosed with non-muscle invasive bladder tumors met the inclusion criteria. The mean age of the included patients was 69.96 years (IQR 35–93). 297 (80.05%) were male and 74 (19.95%) were female. 64.95% pTa tumors, 31.26% pT1, 1.07% pTa + CIS, and 2.69% pT1 + CIS, respectively, were identified. Distribution according to Grade: 196 (52.8%) G2, 159 (42.88%) G3 and 16 (4.32%) CIS. 284 (76.5%) patients presented with a single tumor and 87 (23.35%) with multiple tumors; 295 (79.5%) had tumors larger than 3 cm and 76 (20.5%) smaller than 3 cm. 228 (61.4%) presented with recurrence after 3 months after surgery. Overall survival at 5 years was 80.06%. Advanced age at the time of diagnosis correlated with low survival, p = 0.004. The mortality rate was higher among men (20.54%) than among women (17.58%). Statistically, there was a positive relationship between the increased ratio of neutrophils and lymphocytes in people diagnosed with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and increased mortality rate, p = 0.003.Conclusions: The overall survival of patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer was negatively influenced by the advanced age of the patients at the time of diagnosis. Increased preoperative NLR was associated with a higher mortality rate in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancers. This assay is an accessible, easy to performand useful biomarker in the prognosis of non-muscle invasive bladder tumors.","PeriodicalId":409580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Men’s Health","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123591121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by cisplatin can cause male infertility, which can affect patients' quality of life. Melatonin, which has the ability to provide resistance against oxidation, is a potential therapy for male infertility caused by cisplatin.Material and methods: Normal human spermatozoa samples were divided into (i) control group incubated with physiological saline solution; (ii) cisplatin group incubated with cisplatin; (iii) melatonin group incubated with melatonin; and (iv) melatonin + cisplatin group incubated with melatonin and cisplatin. Spermatozoa motility was measured using a computer-aided semen analysis system. Additionally, we determined spermatozoa apoptosis through terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling. The mitochondrial membrane potential (∆Ψm) and levels of ATP, ROS, and malondialdehyde, as a metabolite of oxidative stress, were measured to study the mechanism by which melatonin can protect human spermatozoa.Results: Melatonin improved sperm motility, and decreased apoptosis and increased the ∆Ψm value and level of ATP in sperm. More importantly, the overproduction of ROS induced by cisplatin was reduced by melatonin. Furthermore, western blotting revealed that melatonin increased the expression of antioxidant pathway components nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) that was reduced by cisplatin.Conclusion: Our studies suggested that melatonin might protect human spermatozoa against the effects of cisplatin through Nrf2/HO-1.","PeriodicalId":409580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Men’s Health","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114432841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the self-efficacy approach and social cognitive career and motivation theory, this study was guided by two research questions, as follows: (1) What are the stress factors for senior taxi drivers? How do senior taxi drivers describe the relationship between stress and job satisfaction, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea? Does age play a role? (2) Did senior taxi drivers leave or retire from the taxi driving profession due to stress and job satisfaction during or after the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea? Why? Does age play a role?Materials and methods: The purposive and snowball sampling strategies were employed to recruit 62 male senior taxi drivers all across South Korea. The in-depth, semi-structured, and private interview session was employed.Results: The results indicated that the surrounding environment and individuals, personal considerations with health and body condition, and financial consideration with insufficient pension from the government policy were three key elements for motivations and career decisions. Contributions and conclusion: Government leaders and policymakers should take the results from this study as a blueprint to reform and polish human resources planning and working rights for senior citizens who continue to work in the professions. Although the government has encouraged senior citizens to be part of the workforce until the age of 65, many senior citizens in late adulthood still suffer from negative workplace conditions and stress. Immediate solutions are needed as senior citizens deserve a manageable retirement.","PeriodicalId":409580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Men’s Health","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132444215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Crocin, a bioactive component of Crocus sativus L., commonly known as saffron, is known to have an anti-proliferative activity againstnumerous types of cancer, including prostate cancer. This study investigated the effects of crocin on testosterone-induced BPH development in rats.Materials and methods: The study sample included three groups of adult male rats (3 months old, weighed 250 g): the control group received corn oil only, the second and the third groups were injected with testosterone (3 mg/kg dissolved in corn oil) subcutaneously. The second group was considered as testosterone-induced BPH (untreated) while the third groups were assigned as testosterone-induced BPH-crocin treated group (100 mg/kg orally for 14 days).Results: After animal sacrifice, histopathological analysis of the prostate tissues was performed in parallel withgene expression of proliferation (PCNA), inflammation (IL-6), and vascularization (VEGF-A) markers, analyzed by qRT-PCR. Crocintreatment significantly reduced prostate index and the thickness of the epithelial layer in rats with BPH. Additionally, the mRNA expression levels of PCNA, a marker of cell proliferation; IL-6, an inflammatory cytokine; and VEGF-A, an angiogenesis marker, were significantly down-regulated in the BPH group that were treated with crocin.Conclusions: The present study indicates that crocin can effectively prevent the development of experimentally induced BPH through inhibition of prostatic cellular proliferation, inflammation, and angiogenesis.","PeriodicalId":409580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Men’s Health","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126232233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
