The process of managing the practical training for students in one of the bachelor-degree program was chosen as the case study. Ultimately, the attempt of this research was to improve the process efficiency and reduce the failures of the particular process. Only top-five ranked failures were considered to reduce. By practice, FMEA can be used to pinpoint and analyze the failure modes; however, by itself FMEA cannot reduce the causes of failure. Therefore, other concepts were introduced to the research; customer relationship management (CRM) and quality function deployment (QFD). These two concepts operated in different angles. Their applications allowed to improve the process efficiency due to the causes of failure reduction. Since some of those failures were stated from the lack of connection and proper communication with organizations who offered the places for training. CRM was considered as the wise solution and it was applied to improve the efficiency of process and also to enhance the relationship with those organizations. Another failure was analyzed as resulting from the lack of student preparation. Since the strategies of firms to protect their innovation vary among patents and trade secrets according to the characteristics of industries, patent analysis might be inappropriate to some industries. Therefore, this paper aims at improving the usefulness of patent analysis in TF by identifying relevant industries which the patent-based TF can be used in. To this end, first, sectoral differences in patenting activities will be investigated, presenting implications from patent activities, innovation patterns and patent statistics. Second, the applicability of patent trend analysis for technology forecasting will be explored in each industry by applying S-curve fitting with patent data. Finally, the method to improve the performance of patent-based TF will be suggested. The comparison of patent application status will make technology forecasting accurate, considering a time lag between R&D investment and patent application of the technology. The main technical decisions were made during the first phase of the decision process, and the others are quite easy to make but the information on the consequences of making or buying decisions, in terms of time, cost and risk, are not shared and are often not present in the context in which the project develops. The authors were invited to participate in order to support project management, i.e. to facilitate communication, coordination and decision-making. The potential impacts of technological discontinuities are analysed by using a foresight tool, the Delphi method. The primary source of information for the PPI industry and emerging printed functionality and hybrid media industries were collected in a three-round Delphi study in the end of year 2006. The knowledge of the chosen industry experts represents the following groups: experts in printed functionality (specialist), industry experts from universities and research institutes (generalist), and business managers and executives (industry). In addition we use alliance data to evaluate the current state of inter-industry cooperation between ICT and PPI sectors. The paper provides insights into how technology expansion and the creative cooperation mechanism might affect the future evolution of industries. Printed functionality represents a promising opportunity for paper companies to find new uses for fibre-based materials and a possibility to lead the industry into a new era of products. Printed functionality can be characterised mainly as an internally driven competence-enhancing innovation for traditional paper companies, which can change the dominant design in the existing industry. An overall view resulting from this study is that printed functionality provides a promising future area for innovations and new business for many industry branches. Therefore it offers an interesting area for future cooperation between the involved industries. It is clear that effective printed functionality strategies must depend upon cohesive alliances and partnership within the value chain.
