However, the leadership of organizations seems to favour the adoption of a methodology with which they are familiar. It is then assumed that if a specific methodology is used business problems experienced would be solved. The question then becomes, how does one choose what would be best for the situation? What methodology fits the culture of the organization? Many process improvement methodologies appear to conflict with each other or at least downplay the contribution of other methodologies. This variety of tools, techniques and philosophies creates the illusion of conflicting strategies. In this paper a comparison is provided between four improvement strategies. Some case study results from the South African clothing manufacturing industry are provided.","PeriodicalId":408691,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126976769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following Moorepsilas law, especially the semiconductor industry develops products of increasing complexity while minimizing time-to-market and maintaining high quality standards at the same time. Therefore, there is a strong need to improve the productivity of digital design projects. However, to be able to do so a quantification of productivity as a metric of inputs and outputs of the development processes is needed. For this reason, this paper focuses on the quality of products under development to describe one aspect of the output of design projects. A method for real-time product quality estimation of integrated circuits based on an integrated requirements and quality model is introduced. Ontologies are used to define the integrated model. The method is implemented in the performance measurement framework Permeter.","PeriodicalId":408691,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127370841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, automated models for comparison, simulation and analysis of products and the appendant workflows are being developed and improved constantly. Since the results delivered by such automatically trained systems are highly dependent on both quantity and quality of the input data used, gathering a statistically significant number of datasets is a prerequisite for the successful application of productivity measurement methodologies. In this paper, we present an approach to automated data extraction developed in cooperation with industry partners. Our concepts are based on the evaluation of a large collection of logfile data generated by a state-of-the-art workflow in the semiconductor industry and on staff feedback. The approach aims at providing an easy-to-use data extraction framework that can be integrated within a current work environment. The experiences gathered in the process of implementing and using our approach result in recommendations for a future unified data format for tool logfiles.","PeriodicalId":408691,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126773454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing from the resource based view and social capital theory we identify the support factors that may turn to interference with the spin-offs business goals. This study has a case study approach and data is collected among high-tech university spin-offs in the Netherlands. Preliminary findings provide insight in the extent to which support is valuable and when it can hamper the progress of the spin-off creation. Understanding the dynamics of the support can help improve the spin-off incubation programs.","PeriodicalId":408691,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121920537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the quakes of 17 th August and 12 th November in 1999, which killed thousands of people and destroyed hundreds of residential buildings, Turkish people realized the importance of being ready for such natural disasters, but unfortunately most of the precautions that must be taken to prevent similar or even deadlier catastrophes in Istanbul have not been taken. In this paper some of these precautions will be analyzed and their importance in the eyes of the public will be decided via multi-criteria decision making systems.","PeriodicalId":408691,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129340269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
