After the quakes of 17 th August and 12 th November in 1999, which killed thousands of people and destroyed hundreds of residential buildings, Turkish people realized the importance of being ready for such natural disasters, but unfortunately most of the precautions that must be taken to prevent similar or even deadlier catastrophes in Istanbul have not been taken.
