The rapid and extensive urbanization in Lagos has resulted in considerable habitat fragmentation and environmental degradation, leading to significant disruptions in the ecological functions vital for the sustenance of migratory bird species. This study conducts a thorough analysis of existing conservation measures, assessing their effectiveness and identifying gaps in current practices. Building on this analysis, the research proposes a suite of integrated strategies for sustainable urban planning that emphasizes wildlife preservation. These strategies include the development of green infrastructure, the establishment of ecological corridors, enhanced community involvement in conservation efforts, and the integration of robust environmental policies into urban planning frameworks. The study underscores the critical need for a holistic and scalable approach to urban planning, one that effectively balances human development with the preservation of biodiversity. The findings advocate for a multi-faceted response to urban impacts, suggesting that while current conservation efforts provide a foundation, they require significant expansion and reinforcement to safeguard the migratory bird populations and maintain the ecological health of the Lagos wetlands in the face of ongoing urban challenges.","PeriodicalId":408414,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Social Science & Humanities","volume":"66 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141140808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the basis of the existing literature, three research questions are posed in this dissertation:1) Do women face barriers when seeking access to local government? If so, what are these barriers? 2) Does gender socialisation and gender norms have an impact on women’s representation in government? 3) What are the career goals of women entering government at the primary level? To address these research questions, this dissertation used mixed methods research methodology, which employed a non-quantitative questionnaire to collect data. To ensure the accuracy of the final questionnaire, this dissertation conducted a Pilot Study to get feedback from the target people. According to findings and discussion, this dissertation found that traditional Chinese gender norms and gender-based discrimination, including internalised sexism constrain the job development of female civil servants at the primary level. It also found that the weakness of China’s elderly care facilities makes daughters-in-law the primary bearers of elderly care responsibilities, which can place additional family burdens on grassroots women and discourage their job advancement. The study further found that the patriarchal dominant ‘guanxi’ culture is unfair to the development of female civil servants at the grassroots level. This dissertation mainly reveals the restrictions and barriers imposed on women under the patriarchal culture.","PeriodicalId":408414,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Social Science & Humanities","volume":" 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141130425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, there remains a paucity of robust quantitative evidence on the effects of DGBL on enhancing students’ piano performance, particularly in Chinese tertiary levels. Therefore, this current research aims to conduct a quasi-experimental design to investigate the impact of DGBL on Chinese university students’ piano performance. Participants were recruited in a southern Chinese university with 30 intermediate-level piano major students. Whilst the experimental group received the DGBL during classes, the control one used the traditional method to learn piano. Quantitative findings showed that the posttest of the experimental group students was higher than their pretest. Moreover, students from the experimental group performed better than the control group. This study may shed some light on implicational practices for teachers and educators with regard to using DGBL to teach students piano.","PeriodicalId":408414,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Social Science & Humanities","volume":" 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141132841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Against the backdrop of contemporary China, the development of the Internet and the increasing influence of communication media have brought to light the growing significance of “Labels” that encapsulate the internal functions, characteristics, or relative advantages of regions in assessing the capabilities of local governments. In this process, the creation and dissemination of urban “Labels” not only drive the new transformation path of inter-governmental competition but also contribute to the reform of the official construction of the capital structure and internal Habitus of urban government field. Based on Field theory, a systematic investigation is conducted on the urban “Labels” generated with the development and influence of the Internet and communication media. In-depth analysis of the logic of urban “Labels” generation reveals that the competitive strategy of urban governments is gradually shifting from the previous “clear distinction between Top-Down” mode to a comprehensive path of “integration of Top-Down and Bottom-Up.” At the same time, the evaluation mechanism has shifted from a single “indicator” evaluation to a more comprehensive judgment focusing on “events,” and the path has shifted from simple “competition” to “competitive cooperation” mode.","PeriodicalId":408414,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Social Science & Humanities","volume":"86 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140279923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As digital platforms become increasingly central to daily life, they not only serve as conduits for global cultural exchange but also as arenas where cultural identities are negotiated and redefined. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of popular social media platforms among Chinese youth, such as Weibo, WeChat, and Douyin, this study uncovers the complex interplay between global cultural flows and local traditions. It examines how these interactions influence the formation of identity, the evolution of values, and the adoption of social practices among the youth in China. The investigation reveals that while social media facilitates the exposure to and engagement with Western culture, Chinese university students approach these encounters with a critical eye, selectively adopting elements that resonate with their personal and cultural identity while resisting those that conflict with traditional values. This selective engagement highlights a dynamic process of cultural hybridization, where Western influences are not merely absorbed passively but are actively interpreted, modified, and integrated into the fabric of Chinese youth culture. The findings underscore the role of social media as a significant force in shaping contemporary cultural landscapes, offering insights into the broader implications of digital technology on cultural globalization and identity formation in the context of China’s rapidly changing society.","PeriodicalId":408414,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Social Science & Humanities","volume":"26 30","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140277262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a detailed analysis of peer-reviewed articles, government reports, and independent studies, this review assesses the program’s effectiveness in enhancing school attendance, completion rates, academic performance, and the broader socio-economic mobility of its beneficiaries. While highlighting the program’s significant achievements in reducing educational disparities and improving health and social outcomes, the review also identifies challenges and disparities in its impact across different regions and demographic groups. The findings suggest that, despite its successes, the program requires ongoing evaluation and adaptation to ensure equitable benefits and to address the nuanced needs of Brazil’s diverse population. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and policy adjustments to optimize the program’s effectiveness and sustainability.","PeriodicalId":408414,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Social Science & Humanities","volume":"53 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140273073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Green Oases in the Concrete Desert: Combatting Beijing’s Heat with Urban Greenery","authors":"Wenjuan Zeng, Muan Yu","doi":"10.56397/sssh.2024.03.04","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.56397/sssh.2024.03.04","url":null,"abstract":"In the face of rapid urbanization, Beijing confronts the escalating challenge of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, characterized by significantly higher temperatures in urban areas compared to their rural surroundings. This phenomenon not only exacerbates the thermal discomfort in city environments but also poses a substantial risk to public health and well-being. Amidst this urban climate crisis, the potential of green spaces emerges as a crucial mitigative and adaptive strategy. This comprehensive study embarks on an in-depth exploration of the multifaceted role that urban greenery plays in combatting the UHI effect and bolstering the well-being of Beijing’s residents. Employing a triangulated research methodology, the study harnesses high-resolution satellite imagery to delineate the thermal footprint of green spaces within the urban matrix of Beijing. Through detailed temperature analysis, it meticulously quantifies the extent to which parks, gardens, and tree-lined avenues contribute to cooling urban environments. Complementing this quantitative analysis, the study engages with the urban populace through extensive surveys, capturing perceptions and lived experiences of the thermal environment and the subjective well-being associated with access to green spaces. The findings reveal a significant cooling effect attributed to urban greenery, with marked temperature reductions in areas with dense vegetation cover. Beyond the thermal benefits, the research uncovers a positive correlation between access to green spaces and improvements in residents’ physical and psychological health, highlighting the critical role of green spaces in promoting urban livability and sustainability. This study advances the discourse on urban planning and public health by providing empirical evidence of the benefits of integrating green spaces into the urban fabric of Beijing. It underscores the urgency of adopting green infrastructure as a standard in urban development projects, not only as a countermeasure to the UHI effect but also as a foundational element for enhancing the quality of life in densely populated urban centers. The research concludes with strategic recommendations for urban policymakers, advocating for the expansion and optimization of green spaces as indispensable assets for achieving a resilient and health-promoting urban environment in Beijing.","PeriodicalId":408414,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Social Science & Humanities","volume":"36 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140282947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the increasing surveillance and censorship by the Chinese government, which has constrained traditional forms of activism, the paper reveals how women in China have adapted their strategies. By employing symbolic imagery, multiple hashtags, and referencing popular culture, these activists circumvent censorship, fostering a new form of de-organized, grassroots digital activism. At this point, no academic articles have been published on the incident. Leveraging Vegh’s cyberactivism categorization framework and analyzing a rich dataset of over 2,000 Weibo posts, this paper employs qualitative content analysis and quantitative analysis to uncover the nuanced ways feminist activism morphs within authoritarian confines. This research contributes to the understanding of how social media platforms serve both as spaces for feminist expression and as battlegrounds against state surveillance in China, highlighting the evolving nature of feminist cyberactivism in authoritarian contexts.","PeriodicalId":408414,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Social Science & Humanities","volume":"232 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139823653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
