We exploit the large increase of Chinese exports in the last two decades to assess its effect in two different countries, Italy and the US. Exploiting longitudinal individual data, we find that trade leads to an increased mortality rate among these populations, the effect being higher in Italy than in the US. A one billion dollar increase in imports leads to a 4 percent mortality increase in the US and up to 7 percent in Italy. We show that mortality patterns are different across occupational groups, with a more pronounced effect on blue collar workers in the US and in Italy, a marked effect on managers of small firms. We show that there are important spatial inequalities in the mortality burden of trade.","PeriodicalId":405226,"journal":{"name":"L'Actualité économique","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115437581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, based on the economic literature and data availability, 12 potential determinants of house prices have been selected. Those monthly data covering the period from July 2009 – date at which the American economy came out of recession – to April 2019, are studied using the approaches of extreme bound analysis developed by Leamer and Leonard (1983) and by Sala-i-Martin (1997) respecti-vely. The results show that construction spending, rent inflation, mortgage rate, real estate loan, economic activity and quantitative easing are robust determinants of house prices. Ex-cept for quantitative easing, the determinants highlighted in this paper are regularly cited in the literature because they are related to the fundamentals of the real estate sector. Thus, the irrational exuberance that could be associated with the current evolution of house prices in the United States might be due to the quantitative easing programs implemented by the Federal Reserve.","PeriodicalId":405226,"journal":{"name":"L'Actualité économique","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132000996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methodology adopted consists of defining a world with three continuous spaces. Space in the centre has no institutions and no production. Only the other two spaces have institutions and are places for production. The study uses the Tullock contest fonction for n-players developed by Jia (2012) to identify thieves' efforts and the institutions' endowments at equilibrium. In contrast to the existing literature, our results indicate a perverse, indirect effect of institutions' deterrence strategies on thieves' activities and a negative effect of an increase in institutional deterrence on the total proportion of production stolen. This outcome therefore *The author would like to express his acknowledgement of the participants at the international symposium on \"Institutions, Govemance and Economie Development in Africa\" for their comments. 246 L'ACTUALITÉ ÉCONOMIQUE supports deterrence policies. Symmetric equilibrium becomes unstable when institutions have different production levels. However, we note that asymmetric equilibrium remains optimal, even in situations of differences in production across institutions. A confrontation between thieves from different areas can be a way for an institution to provide less deterrence in an asymmetric balance while guaranteeing a higher level of consumption than that under the opposing institution.","PeriodicalId":405226,"journal":{"name":"L'Actualité économique","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116908245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nous présentons une estimation de la règle de partage de ressource familiale dans les ménages à deux décideurs et une estimation des économies d'échelles de la vie en couple réalisées par les conjoints. L'estimation a été me née grâce à la disponibilité des revenus et dépenses individuels des membres du ménage fournis par l'enquête nationale sur les conditions de vie des ménages et l'agriculture de 2014 du Niger. Les résultats empiriques mettent en évidence l'existence d'une inégalité intra-ménage à l'encontre des femmes. Les parts de ressource contrôlées par les femmes sont inférieures aux parts des leurs maris. D'autre part, les gains de la vie en couple réalisés par les femmes sont plus importants que ceux réalisés par les hommes. ABSTRACT - In this article, we analyze the process of intra-household allocation of re source using a variant of the collective model of household consumption choice proposed by Lewbel and Pendakur (2008). We present an estimate of the family resource sharing rule in households with two decision-makers and an estimation of savings scales made by spouses in households. The estimate was based on the availability of individual household incarne and expenditure from the 2014 National Survey of Household Living Conditions and Agriculture in Niger. The empirical results show the existence of an intra-household inequality against women. Resource shares controlled by women are lower than their hus bands' shares. On the other band, women's gains in living together are greater than those madebymen.","PeriodicalId":405226,"journal":{"name":"L'Actualité économique","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122895686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
