It is outlined that phraseology is part of the culture of the people, and therefore, without proper knowledge and understanding of certain phraseological units it is very difficult to understand the national character, way of thinking of native speakers or the intention of the author of the literary work. Due to the constant development and enrichment of the language with new stable expressions, as well as their widespread use in fiction, there is a constant need to study the linguistic phenomenon analyzed in the article. It is noted that phraseological units are stable combinations of two or more words that create semantic integrity and are reproduced in the process of speech as ready-made verbal formulas. Lucy Maude Montgomery’s novel “Anne of Green Gables” was exploited for the study. The linguo-stylistic analysis of the phraseological units from Lucy-Maud Montgomery’s novel under scrutiny demonstrated that the most numerous and frequently used were groups of idioms, social expressions and figurative expressions. The least recurrent in the analyzed work were scientific and technical expressions, official business formulas and statements, as well as proverbs, which was explained by Lucy-Maud Montgomery’s idiostyle and limited use of these groups of phraseological units in fiction depicting the lives of ordinary people.","PeriodicalId":404912,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Linguistics","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128057448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However recent language research highlights the fact that knowledge of the language alone does not guarantee successful communication in international contexts: cultural diversity, intercultural communication competence, cultural intelligence, intercultural sensitivity and intercultural awareness place an emphasis on the intercultural dimension of foreign language education (Zaharna, 2009; Committee for Economic Development, 2006) In sum, language training in professional settings needs to be customized according to the academic context, social demands and professional profiles of individuals. Existing intercultural communication competence assessment instruments seem to focus on generic needs of learners, based on a generic learning context, and measure the individual’s ability to communicate in a foreign language across cultural boundaries (Byram, 1997: p. 7; Fritz, Mollenberg & Chen 2002: p.166), but at the same time, seem to pay attention to the variable of a specialized context biased by cultural constrains. It seems that universal ICC assessment models are failing to meet actual requirements and training efforts are not aligned with teaching objectives. Upon identifying the basic dimensions of intercultural communication such as knowledge, attitude and behaviour, this study proposes a revision of different specialized communication settings and ICC instruments from the perspective of professional communication and then review existing research lines to, finally, propose research opportunities from the point of view of specialized languages and contexts.","PeriodicalId":404912,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Linguistics","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121240291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the basis of the collected material, we analyzed these designations as one of the aspects of the national identity shaping, as well as the negative side of this phenomenon — ethnocentrism. The analysis revealed extralinguistics and linguistic factors that influenced the formation of the Ukrainian vocabulary of this segment - history, culture and cultural-linguistic interaction within different ethnic groups in Ukraine and abroad. The studied designations will be identified, and classified within the aspect of ethnic and national identity in a way suitable for the understanding of a non-Ukraian speaking reader. The study will also show how these designations specific to a Ukrainian people having, for the most part, folk origins, can acquire individual traits in the creative laboratory of a writer, undergo an individual transformation, reflect the personal position of an artist in his art.","PeriodicalId":404912,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Linguistics","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127168597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was focused on the idiolects of the central characters of the Donna Tart’s novel “The Goldfinch” – Theo and Boris. The article deals with such concepts as idiostyle, author's style and idiolect, as well as the definition of idiolect as a set of formal and stylistic peculiarities inherent to the speech of a separate carrier of a certain language. On the example of Donna Tart’s novel “The Goldfinch”, it was found out that the means of forming teen idiolect are slang, argots, jargon – they are common to the teen's idiolect in general. In addition, it was found that the elements of the idiolect of each character are words and expressions that reflect his personal life experience: in Theo’s speech such vocabulary includes psychological and art-study terms, a sophisticated and intelligent style of utterances, and later – obscene words and words, borrowed from Russian, Ukrainian and Polish, which appeared in Theo’s speech after he got acquainted with Boris; Boris, a son of a Ukrainian emigrant who had mixed Ukrainian-Polish origin, uses in speech lots of obscene words, borrowings from Ukrainian, Russian and Polish. The translation of the novel by Viktor Shovkun was analyzed and it was found that the translator significantly softened and to some extent neutralized the language of adolescents. A series of translation procedures (classification by Vinogradov), which were used for the reproduction of idiolects of the central characters of the novel, were considered. After the analysis of 300 linguistic units selected by the method of full selection, the frequency of the translation procedures usage and the expediency and correctness of their application were determined. It was noted that the main difficulties of the translation of idiolects is the preservation of connotation and stylistic coloring of idiolects in translation, the transmission of idioms, the adaptation of idiolect to the language of translation and its correlation with the broadcast of the readers. Prospects for further research on the means of forming idiolects and ways of their translation were determined.","PeriodicalId":404912,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130182940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computational linguistics has become the basis for solving many practical tasks in the language industry. Providing the linguistics students with the basics and the methods of the computational linguistics we widen their views on linguistics and show a perspective field of their possible future engagement to them. To get acquainted with computational linguistics, students have to learn how to work with corpora and acquire the basics of programming. This article demonstrates why Python is a good choice for linguists to start learning to programme. It also suggests an approach to teaching the fundamentals of the programming in Python for such students and gives step by step the main structures which can be used for processing texts or corpora. To such structures belong strings, variables, lists, loops, print-function, split-method, incrementation, and control structure. Combining these elements one can, for instance, split text into sentences or words, count words or sentences in text or count only some concrete elements in the text which satisfy a special condition. The article also outlines how to start working with input files. The further structures of Python are named, which can be introduced to the students next so that they become able to do more operations with texts. It is stressed that teaching programming is impossible without trying out every structure, so it is important to encourage the students to write their own code experimenting with each new element of Python and offer them enough practical tasks. Some examples of such tasks are illustrated in the article.","PeriodicalId":404912,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Linguistics","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124504104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These set expressions are used both in oral and written speech and serve for the expression of the speaker’s intentions depending on the communicative situations. In particular, approaches to the definition of the term \"pragmatic idioms\" were considered and a matrix of their main features, defined by several scholars, was created. Structural-semantic features of these units were highlighted, namely the classification of pragmatic idioms according to their structure, parts ofspeech and lexical-semantic groups. In addition, the peculiarities of these units usage in various speech acts such as directives, commissives, assertives, expressives and declaratories were analyzed with the distinction of the contexts specific to each of them. Taking into account these characteristics, the main translation ways quantities of the English pragmatic idioms into the Ukrainian language were determined. The analysis presented in the form of a diagram displays the presence of distinctive features in the usage of these units in the compared languages. The specifics of the pragmatic idioms translation is, above all, determined by the cultural peculiarities and c the difference between the grammatical systems of the English and Ukrainian languages. The main provisions and conclusions drawn on the basis of a thorough practical study of the peculiarities of English pragmatic idioms translation into the Ukrainian language can be used in further researches, scientific works and also serve as basic knowledge for work with these units.","PeriodicalId":404912,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Linguistics","volume":"92 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128838279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This type is actively formed in the linguistic world image of all nations with the help of the media; therefore, the study of the characteristics of its creation and the stereotypes underlying this process is an important task for linguists. The authors analyze the phenomenon of \"linguocultural type\" and look at the approaches to it’s definition, the classification of types and lay emphasis at the modelling of linguocultural types. On the basis of the algorithm of linguocultural type modelling introduced by O. Dmitrieva, the authors analyze the perceptual-imaginative and value characteristics of the type “modern American woman”, which are formed in the perception of Ukrainians. As the mass media is one of the most powerful means of forming our conceptual reality, the research is made with the help of the investigation of modern American media materials as well as the opinion poll of the Ukrainians. The results show that the perceptive-imaginative and value characteristics of the linguistic-cultural concept of \"modern American woman\" are quite similar in both respondents' answers and media materials, but they also have some slight differences. The results have been proven with the help of the corpus analysis based on the Corpus of American Soap Operas. Summarizing the type of modern American, we can say that she is a very attractive middle-aged woman who wants to succeed in her career and hobbies, and in her personal life. She is an independent strong woman who knows what she wants and is ready to achieve it. Her career and self-realization is often more important than other spheres of her life.","PeriodicalId":404912,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Linguistics","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116297595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With globalization processes growing, cross-cultural awareness is bound to be enhancing the use of a common language for international interactions. The expanding circle of English incorporates its variety which is used for cross-cultural communication exclusively by non-native speakers. There is no one who speaks English lingua franca as a native language. Thus, the analysis of its functional value should be focused on the success of communication rather than on the number of deviations from the norms. The functional range of ELF allows its users to exploit it more liberally without being bound to any specific norms or regulations. The paper illustrates the influence of the linguistic situation in Europe on the formation of a new type of the language of intercultural communication (English lingua franca) with reference to the professional culture of seafarers. It has been taken into consideration that international seafarers use ELF for their communication, both oral and written, thus contributing to the process of de-standardization of the English language. The content analysis of certain texts (extracts from seafarers’ professional correspondence) shows some independence of communicative effect from correct / incorrect grammatical and structural form of the utterance based on the use of professional sublanguage and its implicit effect. English lingua franca is promptly becoming an effective communicative instrument of mighty force. It represents a certain cultural segment and enjoys sustainable development. Key words: linguistic situation; expanding circle; effective communicative event; deviation from norms; professional culture; communication instrument.","PeriodicalId":404912,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Linguistics","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130510810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
