Separate analyses were conducted for males and females.Differentials (demographic, social, attitudinal) identified were not completely uniform for both sexes but were reasonably consistent with those reported in American and Australian studies. All of the 17 independent variables examined accounted for 35.8 and 44.6 per cent of the variance in premarital sex for males and females, respectively. However, only 6 of these variables accounted for the bulk of the variance explained. For both sexes the attitude toward premarital virginity emerged as the dominant predictor and situational factors were also of considerable importance for females. Knowledge of where to obtain an abortion was a salient predictor among males but other variables on aspects of contraceptive knowledge were relatively u...","PeriodicalId":404699,"journal":{"name":"Australian journal of sex, marriage, and family","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127274510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Excessive rigidity and enmeshment have been shown to be detrimental to family functioning and are hypothesised to be factors contributing to the development of social anxiety. Self-report data from a sample of socially anxious Australian university students confirm this hypothesis. The findings indicate that counselling with socially anxious persons could usefully involve work with attitudes associated with sex-role stereotyping, emotional bonding and independence. These areas for work could complement the more general treatment programs which focus upon skills training and anxiety reduction in social situations.","PeriodicalId":404699,"journal":{"name":"Australian journal of sex, marriage, and family","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115115703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More often than not, aetiology is multifactorial, the symptom of impotence being the end result of a variety of physical and psychological factors. Physical disease processes, especially penile vascular problems, are very frequently involved as causative factors. The physiology of erection is currently obscure and there are difficulties in logically attributing impotence to physical disease processes, psychological factors or chemical influences alone. Constitutional vulnerability may be important, as in psychosomatic medicine generally.The female partner’s genital structure and erotic skill can be significant factors often neglected in assessment.Opinions on management, particularly on pretreatment evaluation differ greatly, but much expensive and frequently unnecessary investigation can be bypassed by a logical pragmatic sequential approach. A practical management scheme is outlined.","PeriodicalId":404699,"journal":{"name":"Australian journal of sex, marriage, and family","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123717985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ANOVA analysis indicated that in general, respondents agreed moderately with concepts on both factors. As church attendance increased, the respondents’ attitude on both dimensions of homosexuality became less liberal. Females were found to hold more liberal attitudes than males, again on both factors. A number of possibly applicable theoretical propositions were examined to account for the findings. It is suggested that further studies using multidimensional instruments be conducted with non-student populations as findings would be relevant to the homosexuality debate.","PeriodicalId":404699,"journal":{"name":"Australian journal of sex, marriage, and family","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130073328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Risk-taking is found to be less common among women than men. The proportion of risk-takers is significantly higher among those who know where to obtain an abortion. Among women but not men, the proportion of risk-takers is higher for those who approved of abortion. However, among men but not women, a significant difference in risk-taking experience is observed between those who agreed that marriage before parenthood is important and those who disagreed. These three independent variables have a significant three-way interaction effect on risk-taking, indicating that perception of social permissiveness and individual characteristics interact to influence risk-taking behaviour.
