Abstract

SynopsisThe specialised conflict resolution technique known as ‘relational mediation’ differs f r om the traditional dispute processing mechanisms commonly used in relationship breakdowns. The role of the mediator is to effectively intervene in a non-therapeutic and non-legal manner so as to promote the restructuring of the total relationship according to the rules o f future behaviour negotiated by the parties themselves in the structured setting provided by the mediator. The author, a counselling psychologist and trained mediator examines the mediation process and explains how it can help families experiencing discord.
