The following perspective part addresses the main subject in four steps, from flow braking and diversions prior to substorm onset, via the attachment of the magnetic field carried by the flow bursts, to the transformation of the incoming momentum and energy and their earthward propagation, and finally, the generation of the poleward arcs, auroral electrojet, and substorm current wedge. This is done mostly by a critical assessment of results and concepts from the author's research from 1992 to 2021. The outcome is a new scenario of the origin of the breakup arcs, auroral electrojet, and substorm current wedge.","PeriodicalId":403895,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives of Earth and Space Scientists","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125134736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to external perturbations the trajectory of any scientific career goes through several unstable points and may bifurcate to unexpected directions. I discuss a few critical points based on my own experience as a space scientist throughout my professional career. While my examples are certainly quite typical, the trajectories after the bifurcations are always individual. The advice I wish to give to a young scientist: Watch your opportunities and be well‐prepared.","PeriodicalId":403895,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives of Earth and Space Scientists","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131486843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NGSS‐designed curricula, which focus on the practices of science and allow students to explore science through following storylines developed around student‐relevant phenomena, are engaging and effective, and are reshaping K‐12 science courses at a surprisingly rapid pace. In the process, large numbers of U.S. high schools that have never included substantial ESS are now doing so for the first time, providing a significant opportunity to make substantial improvements in general U.S. geoscience literacy. There is still far to go and a successful integration of ESS into the K‐12 education across all states will require substantial service work on the part of geoscientists.","PeriodicalId":403895,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives of Earth and Space Scientists","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122358627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With that experience, I developed a love of the oceans and an interest in oceanography. My graduate training was a time when oceanography and marine geology were blossoming with new ideas and new tools to explore the ocean world. The theory of plate tectonics was becoming widely accepted and scientific ocean drilling was just starting. My thesis study area was in the tropical Pacific. Soon after receiving my PhD, I sailed on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 8, which drilled the first transect across the Pacific equator. The nature of the sediments there posed many scientific questions that continued to intrigue me. Some of these questions remained unanswered for a long time. Early in my career I was fortunate to work with a group of specialists from outside my field of expertise to study the global climate during the last glacial maximum (the CLIMAP Project). Subsequently, I spent 8 years working in the oil industry. This experience taught me the skills of interpreting seismic reflection records that help unravel the history of sediment deposition. When I returned to academia, these skills proved particularly useful in studies of large lakes. Late in my career, I returned to studies of the tropical Pacific, where new tools and techniques helped answer some of my unanswered questions.","PeriodicalId":403895,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives of Earth and Space Scientists","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133895696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This dilemma is even worse nowadays because of the many options available to us, leaving us not enough time to explore them all: the paradox of choice. My life experience offers another perspective on how to make choices; wherein I had to rely more on serendipity, coincidence, and embracing risks. This paper presents a brief description of my career path in space science—from a small village in the countryside to one of the top science Laboratories in the world—and lessons learned through the process of becoming a more resilient scientist. I came to the United States from Bulgaria about 30 years ago, seeking a better education and job opportunities. Navigating a career of research scientist, not only did I find jobs that motivated me every day, I also met amazing people to work with along the way. As a woman in science, I hope my story can inspire and attract young researchers (girls and boys alike) to our community, helping to grow and diversify the next generation of space scientists.","PeriodicalId":403895,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives of Earth and Space Scientists","volume":"201 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115188046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
