These are Julius Freund at Sheffield, Albert Wilhelm Schuddekopf at Leeds, Robert Charles Priebsch at University College London, and Carl Hermann Ethe at University College of Wales Aberystwyth. The rather different fates of each are explained using a number of criteria, including their history of naturalization, their support among their academic colleagues, the strength of local feeling concerning their continued employment by their institution, the role of their institution’s governing body, and whether or not the local municipality had significant control over their institution’s finances. It is concluded that, for each case, a different and aleatory individual factor largely determined his fate, thus vitiating any general explanatory principle that might have been derived from a comparative analysis of the respective situations.","PeriodicalId":40371,"journal":{"name":"Angermion-Yearbook for Anglo-German Literary Criticism Intellectual History and Cultural Transfers-Jahrbuch fuer Britisch-Deutsche Kulturbeziehungen","volume":"15 1","pages":"87 - 130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67254865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Neben diesen kleinen Wundern und Zumutungen am erstaunlichsten aber ist wohl die Zusammensetzung des Hohlschen Kanons. Denn die Lekt ren des radikalen Außenseiters folgen ber sehr weite Strecken den bildungsb rgerlichen Vorgaben seiner Zeit. References to German culture are scattered throughout his writings. Sometimes they are semi-quotations or direct quotations, like for example the Wittgensteinian sentence “whereof I cannot speak, thereof I must be silent” at the end of Birchwood (1973), which is the epistemological counterpart to the philosophical opening statement “I am, therefore I think”, the reversal of the Cartesian dictum cogito, ergo sum ; more frequently they are ethereal and implicit allusions which create an intriguing pattern of intertextuality and challenge the reader to find out the foretexts for the clues given. The notion of the Third Way, whether advocated by politicians like Blair, Schrçder and Bill Clinton, or by commentators such as Anthony Giddens, now seems to have been relegated to the rubbish bin of history, dismissed, in the words of Dan Hough and James Sloam, as little more than a “vacuous and hollow marketing gimmick”. Nevertheless it is still worth re-visiting this public declaration by Blair and Schrçder in as far as it defines a particular attitude to the economy and the role of government which still holds sway in both Germany and Great Britain, long after the leaders who expressed that attitude have left politics. The fundamental claim of the Blair-Schrçder paper is that the world has changed in objective ways which leave old-style Keynesian, Social Democratic politics incapable of solving the problems which countries like Britain and Germany face. The key theme of the paper is that of so-called “realism” and the need to conform to “objectively changed circumstances”, i. e. those of a globalized and de-regulated free market capitalism. The state can no longer hope to mitigate the human consequences of this fast-moving and unpredictable world for individuals and families; it can only encourage the kind of “personal achievement and success” and “spirit of enterprise” which will help people to adapt to “fast-changing societies”. The populations of western capitalist countries must now prove their “initiative and adaptability” on a daily basis, and it is the state s job to help them develop the necessary “flexibility” to do so. Only then will they be able to profit from the “unlimited play of market forces” which is necessary for pros-","PeriodicalId":40371,"journal":{"name":"Angermion-Yearbook for Anglo-German Literary Criticism Intellectual History and Cultural Transfers-Jahrbuch fuer Britisch-Deutsche Kulturbeziehungen","volume":"100S 1","pages":"147 - 164"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2011-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/9783110239201.147","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66884832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the creation of Angermion, a forum has been established which brings the fruitful interaction within European German studies to light and focuses on the exciting and symbiotic German-British cultural relationships existing since the 18th century. Research studies in literary, linguistic and cultural criticism, translations, myths, prejudices, bilateral institutions, theater, music and pop culture are bundled together into main focus topics and supplemented by reviews of relevant new publications. Thus, the yearbook reflects a broad spectrum of intercultural processes of transfer and their change over time and, at the same time, accentuates the latest scientific debates in the humanities. The contributions are published in English and are directed towards experts in anglophone German studies abroad, as well as specialists in German studies, Anglicists, and cultural scientists working interculturally in German-speaking countries.","PeriodicalId":40371,"journal":{"name":"Angermion-Yearbook for Anglo-German Literary Criticism Intellectual History and Cultural Transfers-Jahrbuch fuer Britisch-Deutsche Kulturbeziehungen","volume":"3 1","pages":"51 - 70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2010-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/9783110222715.1.51","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66877061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
