These have been integrated in a system comprising a 40 element surface electrode array that is placed on the forearm, an electrogoniometer and data glove supplying position data from 16 joint angles, and custom signal generation and switching hardware to route the electrical stimulation to individual array elements. The technology will be integrated in a upper limb rehabilitation system currently undergoing clinical trials to increase their ability to perform functional tasks requiring fine hand and finger movement. Initial performance results from unimpaired subjects show the successful reproduction of six reference hand postures using the system.

Six chronic hemiparetic adolescents were included in \u0000 a case series study. Patients underwent FES-cycling training combined with \u0000 voluntary pedaling. The intervention consisted of 21 sessions lasting 30 \u0000 minutes each. Patients were evaluated before, after training, and at a \u0000 3-month follow-up visit through clinical scales (Winter scale, observational \u0000 gait scale, gross motor function measurement, Boyd test and Ashworth scale), \u0000 a standard gait analysis and a voluntary pedaling test. Results were compared \u0000 with an age-matched healthy control group (N=6). Two subjects withdrew the \u0000 study before the completion of the intervention. Concerning the four \u0000 remaining subjects, the clinical scales showed a slight level of disability \u0000 already at baseline and no changes were observed after the intervention. In \u0000 terms of walking ability, some significant improvements (Kruskal-Wallis test, \u0000 p-value<0.05) were obtained after training in two out of four subjects: an \u0000 increase of about 16% and 41% of the ankle range of motion and of about 18% \u0000 and 33% of the ankle propelling power were achieved for two subjects, \u0000 respectively. During pedaling, the work produced by the paretic leg while \u0000 pulling the pedal significantly increased in 3 out of 4 subjects. In one \u0000 subject a more symmetrical cycling movement was observed, whilst for another \u0000 subject a significant improvement in terms of co-contraction between rectus \u0000 femoris and biceps femoris was achieved. In conclusion, this study assessed \u0000 the feasibility of FES-cycling training on hemiparetic adolescents, but did \u0000 not provide evidences about the effectiveness of this intervention in \u0000 improving motor recovery and walking ability. However, since only a small \u0000 group of patients with a low level of disability was involved in the study, \u0000 further investigations are needed to provide conclusive results.

Most frequently used linear method is Principal Component Analysis (PCA) known also as EOF (Empirical Orthogonal Function) analysis, permitting both clustering and visualizing high-dimensional data items. However, many problems are nonlinear in nature, so, for analyzing such a problems some nonlinear methods will be more appropriate. The SOM (Self-Organizing Map) neural network is very promising tool for clustering and mapping spatial-temporal datasets describing nonlinear phenomena. The SOM network is applied on the precipitation and temperature data observed in the region of Serbia and Montenegro during 48 years period (1951-1998) and the zonal maps of homogeneous geographical units are derived. These maps are compared with those recently derived via EOF analysis. Significant similarity of results derived from the two methods confirms high efficiency of the SOM network in analyzing spatial-temporal fields. Moreover, the SOM neural network is more appropriate in analyzing climate data since both climate data and the SOM analyzing method are nonlinear in nature.

The programme that was designed enables observing disections of the gained 3D structure along three axes. HREE-DIMENSIONAL displaying of parts of human body obtained by modern diagnostic imaging methods is even more customary. This enables observing the layers of the tissue shown in the images on a pixel by pixel level and in the context of the 3D structure of the human body. The goal of our work was to show the possibility of such reconstruction using a wide range programme such as MATLAB. Our solution is displayed through an example which does not allow virtual "entering" into the 3D structure, but enables slicing out desired volume to a size of one pixel of the original images. Tomographic layers at the appropriate depth will be displayed on both sides of chosen parallelopiped.

Having different angles slots can detect corresponding structural details - writing strokes and their directions. The word baseline, which serves as a reference for slot angles, can be easily revealed Also, from word profiles taken by different slots we can get candidate spots for preliminary word segmentation. Although very simple this segmentation approach does not request any preprocessing of input bitmap image, including deskew, deslant or smoothing, but it is not resistant on patch noise. In the same manner it is possible to structurally examine isolated word segments without interference with neighbouring ones, in order to combine prominent details from various histograms and get lexicon-like segment description. Finally, we announce further improvement of analytic abilities of this method through partial histograms which more successfully cope with specific structural cases.

The main idea of fuzzy fault detection and isolation is to build a model of a diagnosis procedures, using rules-based Fuzzy Expert System, capable to minimize false alarms enhance detectability and isolability and minimize detection time by hardware implementation to improve reliability, safety and global efficiency. This paper illustrates an alternative implementation to the compression systems supervision task using the basic principles of model-based fault detection and isolation associated with the self-tuning of surge measurements with subsequent appropriate corrective actions. Using a combination of fuzzy modeling approach makes it possible to devise a fault-isolation scheme based on the given incidence matrix. Simulation results of a fault detection and isolation for a compression system are provided, which illustrate the relevance of the proposed FDI method.

Often, in initial engineering models or designs of systems to exert control over a certain aspect or part of a biological system, other control loops may be in operation within the biological system that are not accounted for. When the operation of such unconsidered hidden loops reveals themselves, this presents an opportunity to expand knowledge of biological control systems. A complimentary pair of reflexes involved in respiration was described by Hering and Breuer in 1868. Since that time, the manifestation of these reflexes has been controversial. In a recent group of studies seeking to apply an open-loop control system to assist or restore ventilation by electrically stimulating abdominal muscles, unexpected experimental results led to a more thorough study of the potential presence of the Hering-Breuer deflationary reflex in adult human subjects. This paper describes experiments in which abdominal compression (both manual and by electrical stimulation of abdominal muscles) provide evidence supporting the presence of the deflationary reflex control loop in adult human subjects. The results can be utilized to develop a comprehensive model of the human respiratory system considering both chemical and mechanical feedback.

For the group of complete paraplegics, walking achieved with available ES systems is below their expectations, especially since these systems cannot compete with mobility provided to them by a wheelchair. However, standing and walking with ES systems are beneficial because they contribute to the improvement of physiological functions. For individuals who can stand with some arm support (e.g., paraplegics with incomplete injury and hemiplegics), the current ES systems are an effective augmentation of walking. We suggest that an ES system for walking of incomplete paraplegics and hemiplegics will be better accepted if the stimulation is regulated by a rule-based control, that is, a preprogrammed, sensor-triggered activation of several muscles resulting in normal walking. We present a method to obtain muscle activity profiles from simulation of a customized model of the patient that can be used for the synthesis of rules for control.
