With these words Jesus Christ proposed to two brothers on the shores of the Sea of Galilee a new lifestyle. On that very day a life-transforming journey began. From a simple and humble life as fishermen, Peter and Andrew, became the first disciples of someone who called himself the long-expected Messiah. That encounter marked the beginning of a very intentional and purposeful process. Jesus himself put in place a pattern for “discipleship” that should be initially absorbed by the twelve and later emulated by everyone who would accept the invitation to follow him. However, the original plan of the Master seems to be far from the reality found among many who claim to be Christians. In fact, a majority of Christian churches have quite a different approach from what Jesus Christ experienced with his first disciples. Usually there is a brief orientation/training for the “prospective” follower, mainly on the basis of doctrinal teachings and the uniqueness of denominational beliefs. Then, comes the assumption that the new believer—usually after the ceremony of baptism—will basically be assimilated into the church body and automatically become a devoted and committed disciple. An intentional and real discipleship process is, in most cases, fully ignored. The experiential learning process used by Christ with his first disciples is left out. Perhaps it is important to remind ourselves that “Jesus spent very little time inside temple walls” (Kohn 2010:12). The result? Biblical meanings were substituted for the cultural meanings that went against the teachings of Scripture. When doing this type of contextualization it is important to constantly pour Christian meanings into the cultural practice. Good biblical teaching is the antidote to syncretism, a danger that is always present while doing contextualization. Among Protestants, mainline, mission churches, and Pentecostal and/or Nigerian Initiated churches play key roles in the religious and social arena of Nigeria. Among the mission churches, Seventh-day Adventists with about 234,200 members (2018 Annual Statistical Report 2018:94) constitute a small percentage of Protestants in Nigeria. One of the reasons for this might be that they were late comers to the religious scene of Nigeria. While the earliest Christian mission to Nigeria can be traced back to the 16th century for Catholic missionaries (Isichei 1995:45) and to the late 1840s for Protestant missionaries, Adventist only arrived in Nigeria in the early part of the 20th century. Popular opinion and several historical monographs have placed the coming of Seventh-day Adventists to Nigeria in 1914. The account claims the British Adventist missionary, David C. Babcock along with two other Africans, R. P. Dauphin and Samuel D. Morgue as the first missionaries to Nigeria. According to this popular study, while Babcock and his team started work in Western Nigeria in 1914, Jesse Clifford started work in Southeastern Nigeria in 1923, and John J. Hyde began mission work in Northern Nigeria in 1931 (Anosike 1971; Agboola 1987; Kuranga 1991; Maigadi 2005; Alalade 2008). Hence, Babcock (and his associates), Clifford and Hyde are until today considered the pioneers of Adventism in Nigeria. This is the main reason why Babcock University was named after Babcock as the pioneer missionary in Nigeria. This is a very noble endeavor and is the essence of Christianity. Far too often we have tried to present to people the simple “truth” by arguing that we have that truth and we are disappointed when people to not “see” the beauty of our message. Unfortunately too many times we have not taken the time to understand the belief systems of the group we are focusing on. The Buddhist philosophical worldview is not so much concerned about the hereafter or what we would call heaven; rather, they are interested in how to live their lives today. They call it following the “Eightfold Path.” In this article I want to show how we as Christians can help Buddhists to walk such a path but also to outline a way for us Christians to find ways to share God’s wonderful truth with them.","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124429399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adventists argue that although “spiritual wickedness in heavenly places” (Eph 6:12) still exists with Satan roaring today like a lion seeking whom he may “devour” (1 Pet 5:8) or operating with discretion and subtlety like a snake seeking whom he may “deceive” (Gen 3:1, Matt 10:16, Rev 12:9), every disciple of Christ can be empowered by the Holy Spirit to have victory over the deceptive, destructive power, and malice of Satan and demons. Unfortunately, the biblically sound doctrinal statement on “Christian Spiritual Warfare” (Ministerial Association 2005:149) that clearly emphasizes Christ’s dominant authority and power over Satan and his agents has been a source of debate, dissension, and polemics concerning its practical aspects in some Adventists quarters (see Biblical Research Institute 1983; Koranteng-Pipim 2005:163–205).","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124532796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Impact of Cultural Factors on Leadership in a Global Church 文化因素对全球教会领导力的影响

Baumgartner","doi":"10.32597/jams/vol7/iss1/6/","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32597/jams/vol7/iss1/6/","url":null,"abstract":"Leaders around the world are finding out that globalization has complicated their lives. The rules found in old administrative manuals no longer work smoothly in a world of cultural diversity. What used to be “straight-forward” is now more difficult because your colleagues in the multicultural team bring their own perceptions and expectations to the table. Things that could be easily fixed “with a little good will” or “behind closed doors” have now become complex, culture-charged, and counterintuitive. Information, once the carefully guarded power of the few in the hierarchy, is now readily available on the web and distributed widely in organizations and beyond. What is even more unsettling to some is that new winds of transparency create an environment where bosses used to solve problems by stalling, now find themselves reduced to irrelevance as workers on different sides of an issue can now “tweet” their perspectives, discuss their views on Facebook, posting supporting evidence for everyone to see. Today people who were once disconnected and geographically separated can now work together across continents in real time, seeing each other on their Skype monitors and hearing each other’s voices, and working on projects together that formerly would not have been possible without days of travel. While these developments are vividly described by authors like Thomas Friedman in The World Is Flat (2005) or Clay Shirkey in Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations (2008), there is a fact that cannot be overlooked: we may not be that well prepared to work together with those to whom we are connected. There is a lot more than geographical distance that separates us from one another. More and more evidence points to the fact that the culture-inspired invisible assumptions, values, and norms that leaders bring with them create a distance between leaders working next door to each other that may be harder to bridge than the distance to a team member across continents (Branson and Martinez 2011).","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127743752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most Adventists have heard of the 1901 General Conference session and the reorganization of the church for mission. This article looks at the events of the decade proceeding those decisions that led the church to such major adjustments. The research for this article consists mostly from General Conference reports, private letters of the period, and the Missionary Magazine printed during that time. The existence of the Foreign Mission Board (FMB) corresponds with the decade proceeding the re-organization, so I have used its period of existence as the time period for this research. Much work was begun during this decade by the FMB and the church, so this article is limited to four main topics of missions during that era to better sense the mission vision and mission understanding that led up to the mission expansion of the twentieth century.","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128196779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
