A person adopts a myriad of ways to transcend the fear of death from their life and consciousness. This paper examines how the artistic medium of Bengali cinema provides insights into this existential issue and offers ways to overcome anxieties associated with human decay. Employing the Terror Management Theory (TMT) and film narratology, the study analyses two of Srijit Mukherji’s films, Baishe Srabon (2011) and Hemlock Society (2012), that involve plots where the characters explicitly encounter the fear of death. Both films substantiate TMT’s stance that humans seek immortality by establishing a “cultural worldview” and “self-esteem”, which provide individuals with an illusion of symbolic existence that will last even after their death.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 38(2), December 2021 Page 159-174

This asset generates interest income, which is a measurement of bank’s financial performance and stability. Non-performing loans (NPLs) are those loans that default on paying interest or principal. Hence, NPL ratio is one of the important indicators of a bank’s performance. In order to ensure good performance, a thorough understanding of NPL ratios and factors that affect NPL are necessary. This research evaluates NPL ratio in the Banking sector of Bangladesh and the relationship among the variables of CAMEL (capital, asset, management, earnings and liquidity) model of performance. Last 24 years (1997-2020) time series data of banking sector have been used in this study. Upon analysis of the time series data VECM model is developed to demonstrate the relationship among the variables. The developed model shows high goodness of fit and reasonable explanatory power. Results of the study will help practitioners and regulators to pin-point policies and operational interventions to manage (reduce) NPL.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 38(2), December 2021 Page 71-89

Using yearly time series data from Bangladesh for the period 1987 – 2020, this paper tested the validity of the Fisher effect considering the variables- Nominal Interest Rate (Advance Rate), Real Interest Rate and Inflation Rate. With a view to rationalizing the existence of structural break, Clemente - Montanes – Reyes (1998) unit root test was performed to identify the integration order of the variables of interest. After controlling structural break, Gregory- Hansen (1996) cointegration test applied for detecting the long run relationship by adopting ARDL framework. As the results revealed, Partial Fisher effect prevails for Bangladesh in short run. More specifically, keeping the real interest constant the impact of inflation rate on nominal interest rate is 0.16 percent with a lag effect in both ARDL model but parameters are stable only when we address structural break in the model. Thus, establishing that empirical identification of short run relationship among variables and existence of Fisher effect is subject to proper consideration of structural break.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 38(2), December 2021 Page 175-196

Thus, the discovery of the ways of enhancing pro-environmental behaviour is crucial. With this motive, the present study aimed to find out the impact of social awareness intervention (displaying cartoons and posters near the dustbin and cafeterias) on pro-environmental behaviour (here, throwing waste into a designated area/bin), where gender difference considered as an elementary factor. Data were gathered using observation (observation without intervention and observation with intervention) to get insight about how pro-environmental behaviour can be enhanced by social awareness. To generate more idea about the other influencing factors, semistructured interview was utilized. A total number of 644 cases were observed and 35 interviews were taken. The results depicted significant effect of social awareness on pro-environmental behaviour (Wald = 25.496, df= 1, p<.001) but no significant effect of gender on pro-environmental behaviour (p = .920). The findings are implementable to improve the pro-environmental behaviour among the Bangladeshi population with basic literacy. In relation to community policing, community participation implies to a process in which residents act, voice their opinions, and take responsibility for crime prevention. However, one of the key issues in policing literature is how this process is constructed and maintained. Hence, understanding the process of community participation is critical to the implementation of contemporary community policing. Keeping this in view, a case study was conducted in 2018 to explore and examine the process of community participation in the context of community policing practice in the Uttara Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Bangladesh. Forty-Five participants from police, community and community-police forums were interviewed to have their knowledge and experiences on this critical issue. The study found that the community participation process began with the formation of Community- Police Forums (CPFs) through to the implementation of crime prevention programmes. Various forms of police-community meetings were found to facilitate community to contribute to crime prevention. Participation in Uttara community policing was, however, found more stereotyped in practice and took place in varying levels. The process of community participation was police-driven, and community role was, in most cases, defined by the police.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 38(2), December 2021 Page 1-21

It aims to explore how internally migrated female workers are subjected to discrimination in their workplaces. In this regard, the study has analysed the perceptions of internally migrated female workers employed in different sectors. The data collection methods include survey, KII, FGD and observation. The findings of this study show that more than one-fourth (29.17%) of the female workers perceive being discriminated in their workplaces. Sexual identity is found to be the key ground of discrimination. Discriminatory work environment prevails in almost all the sectors migrated female workers are employed in. The major types of discrimination identified by this study include genderbased disparity in payment, unfavourable work environment for women due to sexual harassment, invidious selection in hiring and promotion, and denial of rights during pregnancy. Though these forms of discrimination prevail across occupations, there are discrepancies in this regard. Domestic workers report the highest extent of pregnancy-related discrimination, but they emphasized oncomparatively lower extent of gender-based payment disparity. Garment workers report a very low level of sexual harassment but a higher level of pay disparity. Payment disparity is a common concern identified across the occupations covered in this study.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 38(2), December 2021 Page 135-157

In that connection care during and after pregnancy, especially antenatal and delivery, is critical to monitor the status of pregnancy both for mother as well as for expected new-born baby. The role of women’s decision-making in reproductive health is crucial one. This study intends to understand the role of household decision-making in obtaining maternal health services- its patterns access and reasons by using qualitative methods. The approaches are employed to explain woman’s decision-making process to utilize the service facilities. The findings of the study illustrate that decision-making processes should be understood and recognized in a wider social environment and as a multifaceted process that is closely tangled with local belief systems and social relationships. We first present a review of the theory of international migration. Regarding international migration from Bangladesh, we note that by the middle of 2020, about 7.4 million people of Bangladesh origin were staying overseas, the sixth-largest worldwide and second-largest in South Asia. Yet there are concerns about illegal human trafficking and smuggling of undocumented workers. Recently there has been the COVID-19 pandemic, starting from the end of 2019 to date. Bangladesh international migration ground realities are often uncertain and challenging, with new situations emerging now and then in many different host countries. In summary, we argue that recent models of migration theory (circular, onward and return migration models) have successfully incorporated issues of international migration from large source countries, such as Bangladesh.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 38(2), December 2021 Page 51-69
