{"title":"The Arab World and the Occident: Toward the Construction of an Occidentalist Discourse","authors":"Z. Salhi","doi":"10.29117/jcsis.2021.0306","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29117/jcsis.2021.0306","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose: This article aims to engage in a meaningful discussion of Occidentalism as a discourse that draws its roots from Orientalism. It scrutinizes the limitations of Occidentalism in investigating the East-West encounter from the perspective of Orientals (Arab intellectuals) and the multifarious ways the latter relate to and imagine the Occident. It will cast a critical eye on the multiple and diverse constructions of Occidentalism as a discourse, arguing that unlike Orientalism, which homogenizes the Orient, Occidentalism does not Occidentalize/homogenize the Occident. Methodology: We take as a starting point Edward Said’s definition of Orientalism as a style of thought based upon an ontological and epistemological distinction made between ‘the Orient’ and ‘the Occident’, and we explore the limitations and the possibilities of Occidentalism as a method to construe the colonial mechanisms of misrepresentation of the Other as everything different from the Self. This article compares and contrasts a plethora of existing definitions of Occidentalism as formulated by scholars from both the Arab world and the Occident. Findings: This paper concludes that the Oriental’s encounter with the Occident cannot, and should not, be projected as a reverse relationship, or, as some claim, as an ‘Orientalism in reverse’. Instead, it should be projected as a diverse set of relationships of Orientals who have experienced the Occident in a variety of manners. Furthermore, while Orientalism derives from a particular closeness experienced between the Occident and its Orient, often through real or imagined encounters, Occidentalism is also the outcome of a long cultural relationship between the Orient and its Occident. What differs between the Orient and Occident, however, is the position of power and hegemony, which characterizes the Occident’s encounter with the Orient. Originality: This article takes an all-inclusive view to discuss the term Occidentalism from the perspectives of both the Orient and the Occident. It teases out the limitations of this term. It challenges Orientalist methods of misrepresentation, which continues to blemish the Arab world and its discourse of Occidentalism as a discourse of hatred of the Occident. {"title":"Courting Islam: The Evolution of Perceptions of Islam within the British and American governments from the European Colonial period to the War on Terror","authors":"Sean Oliver-Dee","doi":"10.29117/jcsis.2021.0291","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29117/jcsis.2021.0291","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose: This article explores the changing attitudes to, and perceptions of Islam that developed over a period in which substantive engagements between Anglo-American strategic interests brought them more and more into contact with Muslim majority governments and cultures. Methodology: Using historical analysis, the article examines selected primary literature to understand how perceptions of Islam within American and British policymaking circles evolved during the European Colonial period. Findings: The key finding is the extent to which perceptions of Islam and Muslims were government not just by the nature of the incidents and issues that politicians and officials were dealing with, but also by the shifting cultural shifts taking place in America and Britain. Originality: The article’s originality lies in the methodological approach of examining US-British policymaker’s perceptions of Islam based upon their experiences. {"title":"Islam in New Zealand – A Mixed Reception: Historical Overview and Contemporary Challenges","authors":"A. Drury, D. Pratt","doi":"10.29117/jcsis.2021.0290","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29117/jcsis.2021.0290","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose: This research aims to discuss the history of Islam in New Zealand, together with some of the pressing issues and challenges Muslims have encountered along the way. Looking back at the history of early Muslim settlers and the emergence of Muslim organizations and allied enterprises, it is clear that the Muslim community in New Zealand has had a rather mixed reception in a land that, on the whole, is perceived to be benignly tolerant and accepting. Methodology: The research is based on a critical analysis of the available literature, both contemporary and historical. This paper explores complicated community developments, conversions to Islam, the violence experienced with defacement and destruction of mosques in reaction to overseas events over recent decades, ongoing Islamophobia, and the infamous 2019 terrorist attack on two mosques in the city of Christchurch. Findings: The research highlights the status of the New Zealand Muslim community and the extent and nature of their influence in the country. It constitutes a social hierarchy with a complex past and multiple internal issues. Accordingly, this paper concludes with a brief discussion of the migrant experience of Muslims. It also elucidates the necessity of further research in the future and emphasizes the need to study the culture, faith and history of New Zealand from various angles. Originality: This is illustrated in the direct attachment of the research to the core topic of religion. {"title":"تحرير مصطلح الإسرائيليات","authors":"بشرى غالب باخلف","doi":"10.29117/jcsis.2021.0285","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29117/jcsis.2021.0285","url":null,"abstract":"أهداف البحث: يهدف البحث إلى تحرير مصطلح الإسرائيليات، أحد أبرز المصطلحات المتداولة في ميدان التفسير؛ كونها تندرج ضمن الأدوات التي قد يلجأ إليها المفسرون في تبيين المعاني القرآنية، وبالرغم من تأثير هذه الروايات؛ إلا أنه قد اختلفت المدلولات المعبرة عن مفهومها؛ ما سببت نوع تشويش في الأذهان. منهج البحث: اعتَمَدت الدراسة المنهج الاستقرائي التحليلي النقدي المقارن، مع الاستعانة بالمنهج الوصفي؛ فتناولت مصطلح \"الإسرائيليات\" من جهة بيان معناها اللغوي، والروافد المؤثرة في تكوين مفهومها، ومن ثم العمل على استقراء الأقوال المعبرة عن مدلولها، والقيام بدراستها، للوصول إلى الصياغة النهائية للمصطلح. نتائج البحث: إن أهم ما توصّل إليه البحث هو تقديم مفهوم جديد لمصطلح الإسرائيليات تجتمع عنده الأقوال المتباينة، فهي: (جميع الروايات المنقولة عن أهل الكتاب من بني إسرائيل وغيرهم ممن أسلم منهم أو لم يسلم، أو من كتب أنبياء بني إسرائيل، مما له أصل في مصادرهم، أو لم يُعرف أصله)، كما بيّن البحث أن سبب اختلاف الأقوال راجع إلى إهمال التتبع الدلالي لألفاظ الأحاديث الواردة في هذا الباب والتحاكم إلى بعضها دون بعض، كالتحاكم مثلًا إلى لفظة «بني إسرائيل» لحصر التحديث عنهم، وإهمال لفظة «أهل الكتاب»، ما أفضى إلى تعطيل العمل بعموم المنهج النبوي في نقل الإسرائيليات، وعليه ظهرت تلك الأقوال المتباينة في اتجاهاتها بين مضيّق وموسّع. أصالة البحث: يمثل البحث إضافة علمية بارزة في جزئية مهمة متعلقة بتحرير مصطلحات وموضوعات علوم القرآن؛ لسبرها ومعرفة أبعادها وتطوراتها الدلالية، وتكمن قيمته وجِدَته في كونه يُفْرد هذا الموضوع بالعناية بالرغم من كثرة الدراسات النظرية في باب الإسرائيليات، ومن المتوقع أن يُحفّز الباحثين المعتنين بعلوم القرآن الكريم إلى مزيد من استهداف هذا النوع من الموضوعات.","PeriodicalId":40091,"journal":{"name":"Journal of College of Sharia and Islamic Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69694190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
