In this paper, we propose a novel Bayesian nonparametric statistical approach to subtract video background. The proposed approach is based on a mixture of Dirichlet processes with Dirichlet distributions, which can be considered as an infinite Dirichlet mixture model. Compared to other background subtraction approaches, the proposed one has the advantages that it is more robust and adaptive to dynamic background, and it has the ability to handel multi-modal background distributions. Moreover, thanks to the nature of nonparametric Bayesian models, the determination of the correct number of components is sidestepped by assuming that there is an infinite number of components. Our results demonstrate the merits of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116337565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These devices are simple and cheap to implement but for the case of sensitive multicarrier systems these devices may not maintain the required level of performance as regards image rejection (IR), carrier frequency offset (CFO) and direct current offset. In the presence of this non-ideal behaviour it is not possible to achieve a high signal to interferer ratio (SIR). This situation necessitates the use of digital signal processing (DSP) schemes to efficiently mitigate these effects and also to relax the stringent requirements on receiver design. In this paper we study the design of a receiver architecture which can jointly estimate the channel impulse response (CIR), IQ imbalance and CFO using long training sequences (LTS) which are already a part of WLAN standards. The proposed schemes provide an excellent performance/complexity tradeoff.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128325290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The speech reconstruction algorithms assume the source-filter model of speech production and construct estimates of clean speech source and filter signals using features extracted from noisy input. A nonlinear harmonic regeneration scheme for source signals is presented followed by two methods for the estimation of the vocal tract filter characteristics. The quantization method applies a priori trained codebooks using clean speech training data and the parametric estimation method assumes a parabolic continuation of low frequency envelope values. The predicted speech quality of the enhanced speech output is assessed with composite objective measures, while the accuracy of the spectral envelope estimations is analyzed with the log-spectral distance over four manually generated signal-to-noise ratio scenarios.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128391859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the principle measurement method and setup have already been presented in [1] we focus on the associated accuracy limits, i.e., the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) calculation for this approach. The minimum achievable position estimation variance is calculated for a variety of estimation scenarios. These calculations are then validated with simulations and real world measurements.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134144883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a spectrum sensing technique based on the estimates of the spectrum of a multiband signal obtained from its compressed samples. The values obtained when decomposing the signal on the time-frequency atoms are usually assigned to their geometrical center, leading to estimation errors for the sinusoidal parameters. To correct this, one can exploit the amplitude or phase information, use the derivatives of the analysis window, or those of the audio signal. This leads to three methods (phase vocoder, spectral reassignment, derivative algorithm) equally efficient: they are in fact different formulations of the best analysis method based on the Fourier spectrum.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126907329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has two implications. First, the conditioning of the problem shows up explicitly, and could be controlled via a constraint on the so-called coherences. Second, a performance measure concerning only the factor matrices can be exactly calculated, and does not present the optimistic bias of the minimal error generally utilized in the literature. In fact, for tensors of order d, it suffices to solve a degree-2 polynomial system in d variables. We subsequently give an explicit solution when d = 3.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126910188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many methods have been proposed to exploit this sparsity to reduce the amount of data required for identification. Most though, have high computational complexity. Recently, an iterative method based on the proportionate affine projection algorithm with row action projections (iPAPA-RAP) has been shown to have good convergence properties with relatively low complexity. Here, we present extensions of that algorithm that significantly speed convergence and as a result lower overall computational complexity. The main improvement is the addition of a zero attractor step with a variable scale factor. Significantly, this scale factor is made to be a function of the sparsity of the estimated system parameters. This greatly improves the convergence behavior of the resulting algorithm. It is compared with iteratively reweighted least-squares (IRLS) and l0 - zero attracting projections (l0-ZAP). Results show that the proposed algorithm converges faster with lower overall complexity.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122043324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we evaluate a number of wideband spectrum sensing techniques that alleviate the data acquisition rate bottleneck by operating at remarkably low sub-Nyquist rates; thus dubbed sub-Nyquist spectrum sensing. These methods were independently developed and are rarely (if at all) compared. Among other deductions, the non-compressive sub-Nyquist approach is shown to have numerous benefits and delivers competitive detection performance compared with techniques based on the compressive sensing methodology.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123493179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead of collecting stimuli for pre-defined emotions, we propose to develop stimuli based on their symbolic meanings. We adopted archetypal symbolism as a standard to edit eight movie clips of archetypes as a new set of affective stimuli. These stimuli were used in an experiment for emotion elicitation. Participants' emotional responses toward these stimuli of archetypes were measured by the self-report technique and the physiological measurement. The results of linear discriminant analysis show that physiological measurement is more robust than the self-report techniques in recognizing emotions toward stimuli of archetypes. However, it is still unclear which technique reflects the ground truth of human emotion. We discuss alternative implications of these results, and provide more research questions for future studies on emotion recognition and model development.","PeriodicalId":400766,"journal":{"name":"21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124705330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
