In the face of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Poland it is vital to apply knowledge from previous research on the psychological impact of global disease outbreaks in order to anticipate mental health costs of the epidemic and social isolation. Recent research has shown medical workers are the most vulnerable to post traumatic stress among many others identified, e.g., people quarantined and socially isolated due to introduced countermeasures. Research gives insight on the impact of overwhelming sense of threat on those affected by the pandemic and how these effects can be observed in declined wellbeing and physical health over long periods of time after the exposure.","PeriodicalId":39960,"journal":{"name":"Psychiatria","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48126446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is characterized by a chronic course, diverse clinical image, and it often leads to incapacity. The course and severity of the disease may vary, while the appearing symptoms constitute a turning point in patient’s and his family’s life. This is why it is important to recognise the symptoms and undertake therapeutic measures. The reoccurrence of the disease does not appear suddenly. Usually it is preceded by the period of various changes in patient’s behaviour and feelings. Those changes are called the warning signs of a relapse. The aim of this research was to learn about patients’ knowledge of schizophrenia, the consequences of not following the doctor’s orders and the warning signs of a relapse. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 69 patients from Mental Health Clinic in Bielsko-Biala. For the purpose of this MA thesis the method of diagnostic survey was used. The survey included authorial questionnaire consisting of 30 structured questions with the possibility of giving one or more answers. Results and conclusions: In the course of the conducted research obtained the results which indicated the high level of studied patients’ knowledge of schizophrenia, its symptoms and the warning signs of a relapse as well as ways of treatment. The examined people expressed the awareness that following doctor’s orders may significantly decrease the risk of relapse. The most relevant issue concerning the acceptance of a disease, the level of patients’ awareness of a disease and systematic compliance with the recommendations of medical staff were enumerated. Most respondents experienced a relapse, despite their declared knowledge of relapse prevention methods. Side effects of used medicines were the frequent cause of treatment discontinuation. The patients indicated contact with medical staff as the main source of broadening their knowledge.","PeriodicalId":39960,"journal":{"name":"Psychiatria","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49645212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Polish Psychiatric Association provides recommendations and tips, including guidelines from other countries regarding the treatment of psychiatric patients during the epidemic time. In Poland, patients requiring psychiatric hospitalization have been treated in centers appointed by the government. In the West Pomerania region such center is the Department of Psychiatry of Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Psychiatric wards have been transformed and adapted to the profile of infected or potentially infected patients who have been quarantined. We present the case of the patient with an affective disorder who was hospitalized on the local infectious ward, the possible difficulties associated with drug interactions between psychiatric drugs and those used to treat COVID-19 infection.","PeriodicalId":39960,"journal":{"name":"Psychiatria","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42988219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It belongs to the group of antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs, which is currently the standard in the treatment of depressive disorders and anxiety disorders with panic attacks, especially for the elderly. There is a lower risk of adverse interactions with other drugs because citalopram is metabolized by several CYP isoenzymes. Risk factors for mental health in the Polish population have been identified.Methods: The 926 respondents completed a set of questionnaires consisting of questions concerningCOVID-19, PTSS related to the COVID-19 outbreak (Impact of Event Scale-Revised, IES-R) and their mental health status (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, DASS-21).Results: Most respondents reported severe PTSS related to the COVID-19 outbreak (44.06%), normal intensity of depressive symptoms (52.38%), anxiety symptoms (56.05%) and stress (56.48%). Female gender, parental status, having a relationship, at least a two-person household are associated with higher PTSS and DASS-21 subscale. A few physical symptoms, a medical visit, quarantine, negativehealth evaluation, and chronic diseases, knowledge of the increase in the number of infected people andthe number of deaths are associated with higher levels of PTSS. Some of the precautions and the need for additional information on COVID-10, the certainty of a high probability of contracting COVID-19, a low survival rate and concerns about loved ones are associated with higher PTSS.Conclusions: The indicated risk factors can be used to develop psychological interventions to improve mental health.","PeriodicalId":39960,"journal":{"name":"Psychiatria","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46380167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
